No one wants to be in a life-or-death situation. However, if you are getting into such a dangerous situation, what will you do, fight or flight?
When 13-year-old Joe Rowlands and his dad were in a kayak (皮艇) accident, the brave teenager chose to fight. He not only fought for his own life, but also saved his father’s.
On that day, Joe and his father Paul were out on their kayak off the coast of Anglesey in the UK. Suddenly they noticed that the kayak was starting to fill with water. Then they found out there was a hole in the floor of the boat. Without another choice, Paul turned the boat over. He asked Joe to climb on top so that he could push the boat to a nearby island.
However, the rough(汹涌的) waves made it too hard for Paul to push the boat to land. They had to swim without the boat. Luckily, Joe made his way to the island safely. But when he looked back, be found his dad was no longer swimming. Risking his life, Joe jumped back into the cold water and managed to drag (拽) his dad up onto some rocks. Then Joe did CPR (心肺复苏) on his dad until he came around.
“I know I can never pay him back for saving my life and I’m very proud of him. He acted with courage beyond his years.” Paul said of his son.

We were both in great anger. "Never set foot in this house again!" stormed Father. With tears welling up in my eyes, I rushed out of the flat and ran along the street.
The street lights were shining, causing rather sad-feeling. I wandered aimlessly.
A young father who held a child in his arms walked past me. I felt as if I saw my childhood from another space: happy and carefree.
But now... I don't know whether it is because I have grown up or because Dad is getting old. We differ in our ways of thinking. He always puts his opinions and codes of behaviour on me. Whenever I do something wrong, he never admits it. We are just like two people coming from two different worlds. It feels like there is an iron door between us that can never be opened.
I wandered in the streets, without a destination in mind. My heart was frozen on this hot summer night. As I walked on there were fewer and fewer people on the streets, until I had only the street lights to keep me company. When I finally reached the high-rise apartment block in which I lived, I saw that the light was still on.
I thought to myself: "Is Father waiting for me, or is he still angry with me?"
In fact, it was nothing. Perhaps, Dad was throwing away some of his old stamps. Perhaps he thought they were useless. I never had the courage to tell him that I liked collecting stamps. I can't stand his outrageous (蛮横的) words: "I can't throw you away, let alone these old papers?"
All the lights were off except Father's.
Dad was always like this. Maybe he didn't know how to express himself. After shouting at me, he never showed any mercy or any moments of regret. After an argument he has the habit of creeping up (悄悄来到) in my sleep and then tucking me underneath the covers.
This was how he always was. He has been a leader for so long that telling everyone else what to do has become his second nature.
The light was still on. "Am I wrong?" I whispered, maybe... With the key in hand, I was as nervous as I had ever been. At last, I decided to open the door. As soon as I opened the door tears ran down my cheeks. I suddenly realized that the iron door that I had imagined between us did not exist (存在) at all. Love---is second to none.

One day, he gave me a cup of water and asked me to taste it. I found it salty. My father said he just put one small spoon of salt in the cup. And then, he led me to a lake, where he threw a big handful(一把)of salt into the lake, picked up a spoon of water and let me taste it again. He asked,“Does it still taste salty?” “Not at all,” I said. My father said,“Now, you may know the reason of your pain: you are just a cup of water, but not a lake. Be a lake and you won’t feel sad any more.”

It was April 1st, 2011, I was skiing in the Tetons with my friends Jeremy and Xavier. That day, I heard someone cry loudly, I turned around and saw the whole mountain start to move behind me. It was a massive avalanche (大雪崩), cars, buses (积雪) was coming straight down the mountain behind me. I felt the snow push me forward, hundreds of meters and then cover me. For a few seconds I actually stopped being afraid. “OK, I’m going all the way to the bottom!” I thought. Then the snow pushed me again down the mountain another 450 meters. In the end, I felt the avalanche slow down and I was just pushed right out of the snow at the bottom of the valley. It took Jeremy and Xavier about 20 minutes to reach me. But the newspapers expanded in the water, and then even his roommates couldn’t help him pull his arm out. So policemen were called and they spent an hour unsticking the stuck student.
Crazy Pet Lovers
How much do you love your pets? Many people in China are famous for how much they love their pets. They dress them up in fashionable clothing and buy them high quality food. Kathy: We wear uniforms from Monday to Friday. Our uniforms are great! Boys wear white shirts and dark blue trousers. Girls wear white blouses and blue skirts. They make us look smart. The uniforms have a logo (标志) with our grades and classes. I think it’s good to wear uniforms. Everyone wears the same clothes. We don’t have to think about what to wear every morning. The teachers and other students can easily tell what class you are in from the logo on your clothes. This needs us to behave (表现) well outside the classroom.
Lucy: In our school, we wear uniforms every day. We have different uniforms in different seasons. Mum says I look nice in them, but I don’t think so. I don’t like the colours of our uniforms—always white and dark blue. I like pink! And everyone looks the same. There are twins in my class, I can’t tell who is who in the same clothes. Also, our uniforms feel so hard, so I don’t feel comfortable in them.

She didn’t have much money, so she was shown the cheapest room in the building, which was all the way at the top floor. The room was tiny and dark, except for a skylight in the ceiling. It wasn’t luxury, but she was thankful to find something that she could afford on her modest income. The young typist, taking a positive attitude, accepted her new home. “I’ll take it!” she said, sitting down on the small bed.
Miss Leeson was very charming, and the other tenants (房客) grew quite fond of her, Every night after work, all of the tenants would gather together and sit on the stoop to chat. One such night, Miss Leeson pointed out a star as she looked up to the night sky. She said that every night, when she went to bed and looked through her skylight, she could see it. She called the star Billy Jackson.
“You ought to see it from my room,” said Miss Leeson. “At night, my room is like a deep, dark coal mine, and it makes Billy Jackson look like the big diamond pin that Night fastens her kimono with.”
Times soon became hard for Miss Leeson, as she was able to find less and less work. She went from office to office every day, and more often than not, she was told that there was no need for a typist. She began to struggle to afford food and rent.
One night when she came home, she was exhausted and weak—she hadn’t eaten in quite some time. She lay upon her little bed and, looking up, lifted two fingers to her lips to blow a kiss to her Billy Jackson. “Goodbye, Billy,” she whispered weakly. She thanked the star for always being there to comfort her in the darkness. Then, she closed her eyes.

I don’t remember much about what we learned in her class, but my mother once told me that we used to write a lot. And I would bring back what I wrote and she would look at it and see there were so many mistakes. But no red corrections (改正), and always a star. Sometimes even a Good, which would make me fly with happiness. So one day when my mother went to meet Mrs. White for one of those parent-teacher meetings, she asked her why she never corrected my mistakes in the right spellings of words or pointed out grammatical mistakes.
“The children are just beginning to get excited about using words and forming (形成) sentences. I don’t want my students to lose interest because of red ink (墨水). Spelling and grammar can wait, the wonder of words won’t...”Mrs. White said.
Later I knew that if Mrs White had used her red pen often, I probably wouldn’t be telling you about this now. I look back now and think she must have been a rather unusual teacher to use as less red pen as possible.
I used to misspell (拼错) “beautiful” a lot, and could never remember that the “e”goes before the “a”. It made my teacher in high school angry. She asked me to use “pretty” when I was writing. I didn’t listen to her. To my eyes, “pretty” is easier to spell, but it doesn’t hold as much as we mean sometimes.
And thanks to Mrs. White, I never worried about writing what I meant even if I couldn’t quite spell it out, because life isn’t “pretty”. It’s “beautiful”.
