Since the age of 5,Laura Lee has had a strange habit—she collects cardboard toilet-paper rolls(厕所卷纸筒). She didn’t know this habit would one day become a recycling movement.
In 2018,Lee set up a goal to collect 1,000 kilograms of these rolls. She was then a 16-year-old student at Nanyang Girls’ High School in Singapore. As of February 2021,she collected 860 kg. She received an Ecofriend Award from the Singapore government.
Why did she choose toilet rolls?“They are convenient to collect and also one of the purest forms of waste to recycle because they are made of only one material,” Lee told Singapore Today. “It’s more difficult to recycle pens because they are made up of too many different materials like rubber casings(橡胶外壳),metals and plastics, which require more resources to separate(分离).”
Lee went into a partnership with the waste management firm Veolia. The firm gave her money for every kilogram of toilet rolls.
She organized “toilet roll challenges” within her school and worked with cleaners to collect used toilet rolls. She gave speeches about what she was doing at local schools. She also raises awareness(意识)about different social groups through her Instagram Live series,“On A Roll”.
One big challenge Lee faces is others doubting her because of her young age.“I always have toy use my actions to prove that I’m passionate(有热情的)and know about this,” she said. She will donate the money collected to a social cause focused on community health.
1. When did Laura Lee set the goal to collect lots of toilet rolls?2. According to Laura Lee,which is easier to recycle, toilet rolls or pens?
3. How does Laura raise awareness about different social groups?
4. What will she do with the money collected?

That’s exactly what happened to Nkosikho Mbele, a worker at a gas station in South Africa. His sudden luck was brought about by an act of kindness he did for a young woman—Monet, a company manager.
One day, Monet stopped at the gas station to refuel(加油). But when Nkosikho was about to serve her, she realized she didn’t have any money or cards on her. She immediately tried to stop him. Knowing about her trouble, Nkosikho decided to pay her gas bill of about R100 ($ 7)to make sure that she could travel across the highway with enough gas.
“Madam, I’ll pay for you so that you won’t run out of gas on the road.Whenever you are near here again, you can just give me back the money,” Nkosikho said. As for him, the R100 was almost all he made in a day. He had to support a big family. He needed the money very much. He wasn’t even sure if Monet would come back to return his money, but he still volunteered to help her.
Several days later, Monet came back with his money and a box of chocolate. She was so thankful that she also posted their story on the Internet. Great changes took place. Nkosikho became famous in his town. Many people were moved by his act and offered to raise money for him. I’m from Orange County, California, where I had the pleasure and honor of serving as a Newport Beach ocean lifeguard(救生员). Whenever I could, I got shifts(轮流/轮值) working the Point. The Point was known for its great rip currents(退流潮). Now and then it could be very dangerous.
So, late in a shift, I was working Tower 15. Two streets to my right was another guard named Mike, working Tower 17. He called me, “Hey, I got a couple of kids. I gotta go and give them a warning. Keep an eye on us.” I said, “Sure.”
And sure enough, as soon as he hung up the phone, a rip current was coming up quickly under these two kids, and they were getting drawn out. All I saw was two small noses moving up and down in the water. They were in great danger. Mike was rushing quickly toward the sea.
By now, the mother of the two kids realized what was happening. She was crying crazily. I was also very worried and started running toward her, but before I was even halfway there, Mike reached the kids.
Mike swam sideways out of the rip current into the clear water and started bringing them in. When I reached their mother, Mike was in waist-deep water. The kids were so tired and afraid that they could not swim back by themselves, so Mike was carrying them, one under each arm.
I turned to their mom, “Hey, it’s OK. They’re safe.” I saw her stop crying and slowly start to calm down.
She turned back and got her first good look at Mike. He had a number of really terrible tattoos(纹身) on his strong arms and back, and his head showed the long scars(伤疤) he got from a broken beer bottle. Then a crazy thing happened. I saw a new kind of panic(惊慌) wash over her as though there was some new dangerous thing would happen to take away her kids’ lives. She rushed up to Mike, immediately caught her kids and walked away. Not even a thank-you.
Mike just looked at me and his tattoos on the arms, made a face, and ran back to his tower. I watched him with respect and came back to guard my own tower.
If any other guard had worked 17 that night, including me, there would be a very real chance that that mother wasn’t going home with both her kids.

Many of us have the kind of big dreams that becoming rich and famous and becoming a star or entering an ideal college. In the autumn of 1985, I was a bright-eyed girl heading off to Howard University, hoping to get a legal job and dreaming of sitting on a Supreme Court bench somewhere. Twenty-one years later I am still a bright-eyed dreamer and one with quite a different tale to tell.
My grandma, an amazing woman, graduated from college at the age of 65. She was the first in our family to reach that goal. But one year after I started college, she suffered from a serious illness. I made the choice to withdraw from college to care for her. It meant that school and my personal dream would have to wait.
Then I got married with another dream: building my family with a combination of adopted and biological children. In 1999, we adopted our first son. A year later came our second adopted boy. Then followed son No. 3. In 2003, I gave birth to another boy.
You can imagine how busy I am, raising four boys under the age of 8! Our home was a complete zoo — a joyous zoo. Not surprising, I never did make it back to college full-time. But I never gave up on the dream, either. I had only one choice: to find a way. That meant taking as few as one class each term.
Feeling really sorry about the time I spent away from the boys. There were times I wanted to give up, but I knew I should set an example for them to follow through the rest of their lives. In 2007, I graduated from the University of North Carolina. It took me about 21 years to get my college degree!
When you’re looking at a big challenge from the outside, it looks huge, but when you’re in it, it just seems normal. Everything you want won’t arrive in your life on one day. It’s a process. Remember: little steps add up to big dreams.

A living wall is how the city of Liverpool has made room for nature in its busy city center. Without planting space, it turned the concrete (混凝土的) surface of the St. John’s Shopping Center into a 65-meter living wall. It is perfectly located to help take in some of the pollution produced by the nearby bus station.
In 2021, two beehives (蜂箱) were put on the rooftop of the shopping center, each housing 20,000 bees. The bees don’t just pollinate (授粉) on the living wall. They are active within a five-kilometer-wide circle around their hives, helping the environment of the wider community.

Singapore plans to be “a city of nature.” In February 2021, the city announced (宣告) its “Green Plan 2030.” It’s a program to make the city as environmentally friendly as possible. Singapore already has over 400 parks and 4 nature protected areas. It has also promised to plant a million trees across the country and further increase parkland by 50 percent. The hope is that by 2030, no family will be more than a ten-minute walk from a green space.

The High Line on the West side of Manhattan is a two-kilometer long public park. It is built along the remains of a railway line. The railway line closed in the early 1980s. It faced being pulled down before people wanted to put the place to good use. In 2003, people decided to make it an above-street level garden. It is now a city greenway with over 150, 000 flowers and trees.
The projects from all over the world show just how possible it is to include nature into city. Some of the projects are big, while others have a far more localized influence—but all are inspirational ways to give the whole planet a helping hand.

Earth Hour is a global event organized by WWF. The event takes place every year to encourage families, companies and communities to turn off a part of lights and electrics for an hour. The event will happen between 20:30 to 21:30 on the 25th of March 2023.

As it is at the end of summer, people think it's their last chance to go to a festival and have fun before going back to boring work.
The dream begins as soon as you start traveling to the island. In order to get to the campsite(营地) of the Bestival, you have to take the ferry(渡船). The ferry is full of happy festival lovers who are ready to take part in the fantastic music party. After you arrive at the campsite, you can put your tent up. There people talk with each other openly. They are not that cold like those you meet in your everyday life.
The festival lasts for four days. During that time you forget all your worries and problems, just like living in a dream. And it is really hard for you to come back to “reality” after that.
It seems that it is this kind of music event that makes people gather together. It gives people a real sense of unity, I took part in the Bestival with my friends the year before last.
It was so exciting and we all lost ourselves in the beautiful music. We are family sung by Sister Sledge was my favourite. I’m really looking forward to joining in it for a second time.

There were smiling children all the way. Clearly they knew at what time the train passed their homes and they made it their business to stand along the railway, wave to complete strangers and cheer them up as they rushed towards Penang. Often the whole families stood outside their homes and waved and smiled as if those on the trains had been their favourite relatives. This was the simple village people of Malaysia. I was moved by them.
I had always travelled to Malaysia by plane or car, so this was the first time I was on a train. I did not particularly enjoy the long train journey and had brought along a dozen newspapers and magazines to read and reread.
It was not long before the train was rattling across the Causeway and in Malaysia. Johore Bahru was just another city like Singapore, so I was tired of looking at the crowds of people as they hurried past. As we went beyond the city, I watched the straight rows of rubber trees and miles and miles of green. Then the first village came into sight. Immediately, I came alive and decided to wave back.
From then on, my journey became interesting. I threw my magazines into the waste basket and decided to join in Malaysian life. Then everything came alive. The mountains seemed to speak to me. Even the trees were smiling. I stared at everything as if I had been looking at it for the first time.
The day passed fast and I even forgot to have my lunch until I felt hungry. I looked at my watch and was surprised that it was 3:00 p.m. Soon the train pulled up at Butterworth. I looked at the people all around me. They all looked beautiful.
I looked forward to the return journey, by train.
