However, my heart sank when I arrived there. It wasn’t what I expected (期待). It didn’t look like a school at all. The school had only 3 classrooms, one for Grades 1, 2 and 3, and another for Grades 4, 5 and 6. There was a third one for me.
The children welcomed me warmly on my first day. They asked me a lot of questions, and I told them stories and my life in Shanghai. The next day, I gave them a test to find out their level (水平). To my surprise, although the test was very easy, over half of them failed it, and yet they all wanted to learn new things. I knew they needed me.
I was busy preparing lessons, and reading test papers every night. I enjoyed teaching these lovely and hard-working children, and I could see that they were making progress with my help. I have also learned a lot from them. I understand their lives better and we are now good friends.
I have worked in Longzhou for a year by now. I’m very happy, and the experience has been very useful to me. I love the small village and the children. In fact, I would like to continue working here.

Six years ago after hosting a school’s ceremony, I found my left leg was a little swollen (肿胀的), and very soon I could not walk. The swollen part became so painful that I could hardly sleep. Of course, I went to a local hospital, where I was given very bad news. This growth was bone cancer. Over the next two years, I suffered the worst time of my life. Physically, I felt that the side effects were killing me. I lost all my hair. I could barely eat anything even if I felt hungry. I no longer needed an alarm clock to wake up in the morning. Instead what woke me was my body telling me it needed to vomit (呕吐).
Lacking of money, my parents had to go back to work, and for a long time, I faced my time in hospital alone. Yet I acted like a warrior (战士) in fighting against all of this. So over the next two years, I underwent three operations. Eventually, I was able to return to school and made many new friends. Much to my surprise, I could finally walk normally, and my left leg looked perfectly normal.
After six years of fighting this battle, I have come out on top. I have been so lucky to be able to find the strength and courage to handle all of this, and I can tell anyone still struggling against difficulties: Have faith in yourself and do not let bad moments drag you down. Just hang on and you will come through.
Many bad things happen in life, but they do not mean we should give up. All the ways to fight tough battles were meant to be lonely. Others may give you strength, but only you can win the battle. And when you do, a crack will appear in the room of darkness, and light will begin to pour in.

Deenu was an honest (诚实的) man. He treated every person fairly, but sometimes he got cheated. So he thought the world was full of unpleasant things.

“Yes. I want to know how to change the world. Everything in nature is so beautiful, but there are so many bad people who only care about themselves. What can I do?” Deenu said.
The old man smiled and asked, “Did you smile at all your customers today?” “Sometimes,” Deenu answered. “For those people you don’t like, did you show them a smile first?” the old man continued. “Not really. Why should I do that?” Deenu asked.
“Well, if you really want to do something for the world, you can start with yourself. You can’t change how other people think or act, but you can decide what you do,” the old man said patiently.
