Do you know what a resolution is? It’s a kind of promise. Most of the time, we make promises to other people. However, promises you make to yourself are resolutions and the most common kind is New Year’s resolutions. The start of the year is often a time for making resolutions. When we make resolutions at the beginning of the year, we hope that we are going to improve our lives. Some people write down their resolutions and plans for the coming year. This helps them to remember their resolutions. Others tell their family and friends about their wishes and plans.
There are different kinds of resolutions. Some are about physical health. For example, some people promise themselves they are going to start an exercise program or eat less fast food. Many resolutions have to do with self-improvement. These are about making yourself a better person. Some people might say they are going to take up a hobby like painting or taking photos, or learn to play the guitar. Some resolutions have to do with better planning, like making a weekly plan with schoolwork. For example, a student may have to find more time to study.
Although there are differences, most resolutions have one thing in common. People hardly ever keep them! There are good reasons for this. Sometimes the resolutions maybe too difficult to keep. Sometimes people just forget about them. For this reason, some people say the best resolution is to have no resolutions! How about you-will you make any next year?

My 100 Days Without a Mobile Phone
When was the last time you left home without your mobile phone? Can you imagine yourself living a month, or even a year without checking your mobile phone from time to time?
As a busy modern person with lots of social connections, plans and responsibilities, I just cannot afford to not be in touch with the rest of the world. Staying connected to other people is a big part of my life. However, sometimes it can be bothersome (恼人的).
One day I discovered I was terribly tired out. I tried turning notifications (通知) off. But the fear of missing out something important made me check the phone more often than before. So, I simply stopped using my phone.
Well, to tell the truth, it was not simple at all. For the first couple of days, I had a big fear that all of my friends would soon forget about me. When I had a free moment, I had no idea what to get myself distracted (分心的) with, and the worries mixed with boredom kept bothering me.
However, after three weeks without a mobile phone, I started noticing changes — changes which I liked, and which drove me to not just continue the experiment, but in fact to reorganize some of my habits.
First of all, I noticed that I became much more focused (专注的). Before, while doing something, I would often find myself wondering what was going on online. After a month of staying away from my mobile phone, I found that the urge (冲动) was already not that strong and that my ability to focus improved.
I discovered that the world is a beautiful place. Before, I would look at it through my camera mostly: take a photo, post it, get some likes. Now, I saw beautiful people walking around and I sensed the seasons change. I could understand the actual beauty of the world, and I did not need anyone else to prove the value of this beauty through likes or shares.
Now, as 100 days have passed, I can say that the experiment was worth it. I am planning to stay away from my phone for as long as possible.
1. Why did the writer check the phone more often than before when he was terribly tired out?2. What changes did the writer have after three weeks without a mobile phone?
3. Would you like to follow the writer’s example? Why or why not? (Please give two reasons.)
A 10-year-old boy decided to learn judo though he had lost his left arm in a car accident. The boy was doing well, so he couldn’t understand why, after three months of training, the master had taught him only one move.
“Master,” the boy finally asked, “shouldn’t I be learning more moves?” “This is the only move you know, but this is the only move you’ll ever need to know,” the teacher answered.
Several months later, the teacher took the boy to his first competition. Surprising himself, the boy easily won his first two matches. The third match proved to be more difficult, but after some time, his opponent (对手) became impatient and charged; the boy skillfully used his one move to win the match. Still amazed by his success, the boy was now in the final.
This time, his opponent was bigger, stronger, and more experienced. Soon after the match started, the boy seemed to lose. Thinking that the boy might get hurt, the judge called a time-out. He was going to stop the match when the teacher appeared. “No,” the teacher said, “Let him continue.” A short time after the match carried on, his opponent made a careless mistake. At once, the boy used his move to pin (压住) him. The boy won the match and the competition.
On the way home, the boy asked the teacher what was really in his mind. “Why could I win the competition with only one move?” The teacher answered. “First, you’ve mastered one of the most difficult throws in judo. Second, your opponent can only attack your left arm to win you.”

“Why would I do that?” he replied.
“Well, then you won’t have to spend an hour here transferring your money. You can also do your shopping online. Everything will be easier!” I said excitedly. He asked, “If I do that, I won’t have to go out of the house?”
“Yes!” I said. I told him how they can deliver (递送) the food and clothes to our doors now. And we can buy everything we need by just staying at home.
However, he said, “Since I walked into this bank today, I have met four of my friends. I have much free time, so I like to come to the bank and meet different people. Two years ago, when I was in hospital, the store owner from whom I bought fruit came to see me. And when your mom fell down a few days ago, the bank manager saw her and helped her get to the hospital.”
He went on, “Why would I want to look at my computer all the time? I like to know the person around me. Do Jingdong and Taobao send feelings and relationships between people, too?”
I didn’t know what to say after hearing his words. My dad was right, of course. It’s better for us to spend time with real people than computers.

Recently we did a survey of students'dream jobs in our class. Here's the report about my group members’ ideas.
Mary: I want to be a teacher when I grow up. I think I am very patient and I enjoy working with children. Now, I am interested in all the subjects and work very hard to learn them well. I can get along well with the teachers and make friends with students easily at school. I am sure the kids will like me.
Kate: I am slim and good at dancing and I would like to be a ballet(芭蕾) dancer in the future. I spend two hours on ballet training(训练) every day. After high school, I will learn dancing lessons in a college(大学).
Mike: I would like to be a writer when I grow up. I like to share(分享) my wonderful stories with other people. Now I keep reading and writing every day. I also send some of my stories to the magazines.
Lucy: I want to be a singer because I like singing very much. I practice singing every day.
People have their own dreams and work hard for them, because they all know it is not easy to realize(实现) them in the future.

These students were taking part in the “School Next Design” national competition. Some of their designs won the favor of judges with the help of Michigan State University (MSU) students and entered the final round.
“Three eighth-grade teams from Sacajawea Middle School, here in Bozeman, needed to come up with their idea of school of the future,” said MSU architecture (建筑学)student Jennisse Schule.
The students came up with lots of ideas. Some wanted to build a planetarium(天文馆); some designed a movie theater. Eighth-graders Heather, Jon, and Mitchell wanted to have athletic buildings at their school. And they wanted lots!
“So we have our gym over here. It is a big facility(场所). It has a weight room, an aerobics(有氧健身)room, a gym, a track, and then some turf(草皮)for soccer and football,” Mitchell said.
But of course, designing a building is not easy. The students had to learn architecture terms, the materials they needed to use, and how to put the models together on a computer. Also, they needed to make a presentation, videos, and an essay.
Like Heather said, it isn’t just about designing a building. “It’s about community and how someone should feel and making everything a better place, a whole town or neighborhood.”

![]() Nothing would have made me happier than knowing the 2022 Winter Olympics will be held in Beijing. As it becomes the first city to host both the Summer and Winter Olympics, I couldn’t help wondering what to expect from the Games this time. Here is my wish list: Blue sky I still remember how clear the sky was during the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Sadly, pollution went back to Beijing after that. I hope the Winter Olympics will push Beijing to reduce pollution. Hopefully, the blue sky will become a regular feature even after the Games. Better transportation Besides Beijing, Chongli in Zhangjiakou will host some of the snow events. I was there once for skiing, and I had to spend 10 hours in the mountains on my way back because the highway was closed after heavy snow. It is pleasing to learn that a high-speed railway linking Beijing and Zhangjiakou is in the works, shortening the travel time from 4 hours to 50 minutes. A boost(促进)for winter sports China has shown is power in the Summer Olympics. It has never dropped out of the top-three list since 2000. However, is best performance in the Winter Olympics was in the Vancouver 2010 Games where it was placed 7th. As the host, China will make an effort to improve its performance in 2022, and it would be interesting to see whether China can break into the top-three list. |

Paper is one of our oldest, simplest and most important inventions. It is the pride of us Chinese, but it also presents a danger to the world.
First, the making of paper requires the loss of many millions of trees each year. According to The World Counts, between 2001 and 2019, the world lost a total of 386 million hectares of forest. Of the trees that were cut down, 42 percent went to paper production. That represents a great part of the world’s forests. And worldwide use of paper is expected to double in the next 40 years. Clearly, the planet cannot keep such a high rate of forest Loss.
The second great problem with paper is that when the paper is used, it is useless. A great deal of wastepaper ends up in rubbish and even landfills (废物填埋场),where it can produce harmful gases. Paper in landfills causes the release (释放) of methane, a gas that is an important factor (因素) in climate (气候) change all around the world.
One simple way to help out can greatly reduce both of these problems: paper recycling. Instead of cutting down trees, recycle used paper to meet the need of paper-making. Effective recycling requires an effort from everyone all over the world. The way to begin is with education and understanding. Once enough people realize the need for recycling, more effective recycling systems can be put into use.
The need is real. The loss of tees influences everybody on earth. Everyone should do their part to recycle paper and encourage government and industry to do the same. The world will be a better place for it!

One day, 14-year-old Wen Jiayi posted a photo on QQ. However, one of her classmates wrote “you are so ugly and silly” under the photo. Wen was shocked and didn’t know how to reply.
This is an example of cyber bullying(网络暴力), which refers to sending, posting, or sharing bad things about someone else online. Lots of kids these days have experienced some forms of cyber bullying. According to a recent survey, nearly 30% of teenagers in China have been bullied online. Bad language is usually used in cyber bullying.
Nearly 70% of cyber bullying happens through social media. 14-year-old Sun Zhenyao studies at Hefei No.50 Middle School in Anhui. When he writes down his opinions on news articles, he sometimes receives rude messages from strangers. “It comes out of nowhere and drives me crazy.” Sun said. He adds the bullies to his blacklist and reports them to the sites he posts on.
However, most victims(受害者)don’t take this kind of action. About 60% of cyber bullying victims stay silent. Sometimes it’s difficult to fight back by yourself. But if those messages really hurt you, just ask your parents or teachers for help.
