In May 2001, I found a job in New York at the World Trade Center. On September 11, 2001, I arrived at my building at around 8:30 a.m. I was about to go up when I decided to get a coffee first. I went to my favorite coffee place even though it was a little far from my office. While I was waiting in line with other office workers, I heard a loud sound. Before I could join the others outside to see what was going on, the first plane had already hit my office building. We stared in disbelief at the black smoke rising above the burning building. I felt lucky to be alive.

【推荐1】It was a beautiful spring day in a forest. High up in a tree, a mother bird was resting in her nest (鸟巢). She had just given birth to six baby birds. Five of the baby birds were strong, but the youngest one was weak. The mother bird called him Little Six. His elder brothers and sisters often laughed at him. “Look at Little Six,” said the eldest brother, “he’s so weak and he can hardly move.” Little Six felt upset. The mother bird worried about him much.

However, Little Six had a strong will. He made a decision that he would do exercise to become strong. Every morning, Little Six would get up early. Before his brothers and sisters woke up, Little Six would finish all his exercise. He trained his wings over and over again to make them strong.

After a couple of months, all the birds grew up. The mother bird got her babies together to teach them to fly. To everyone’s surprise, Little Six was the first one to start flying! “Look at me! 【推荐2】Here is a story: A man sees a butterfly. The butterfly tries to get out of its chrysalis(蛹). Feeling sorry for it, the man decides to help. He cuts the chrysalis and the butterfly comes out easily. Surprisingly enough, the butterfly is unable to fly. If the butterfly doesn’t struggle(挣扎) to leave the chrysalis, it can’t fly! The struggle develops the energy in the butterfly which makes it fly. Similarly, the challenges of life bring out the best in young people and make the fly.

When people are young, meeting and overcoming challenges will make them strong and ready to face life. When we look at successful people, we see that the most successful of them are people who have had to struggle. One famous businessman, who now owns many big supermarkets, used to carry clothes on his back and sell them from door to door when he was young. Another successful man is Dennis. His father died when he was only twenty. His father’s death forced him to mature fast. He had to bring up a family of nine people. He took up the challenges and overcame them. Today his brothers and sisters are leading successful lives.

Sometimes challenges do not appear to us because we keep away from them. So some parents and teachers actively encourage young people to face challenges. They might organize some activities for young people which provide them with challenges, like rock-climbing, camping, volunteer work and so on. However, just passing exams will not prepare a person for life. We must meet and overcome challenges. The young people of today will become the leaders of tomorrow. For countries to continue to become successful, it is important that the young people learn to meet challenges and overcome them.

【推荐3】When I was growing up, I was embarrassed to be seen with my father. He was disabled and very short. When we walked together, people would stare at us.

Our usual walk was to or from the subway, which was how he got to work. He almost never missed a day. He would make it to the office even if others could not. It was a matter of pride for him.

He never felt sad for himself or envied (嫉妒) other people who could walk normally. What he looked for in others was a good heart. To him, that mattered more than anything else.

My father still tried to do the same things as others did, even if he couldn’t do them the same way. For example, he liked to go to dances and parties, where he could have a good time just sitting and watching instead of dancing.

I now know he took part in some things through me, his only son. When I played basketball (poorly), he “played” too. When I joined the army, he “joined” too. When I visited his office, he would introduce me, but he was really saying, “This is my son, but it is also me, and I could have done this, too, if things had been different.”

He has been gone for many years now. I wonder if he ever noticed that I was embarrassed to be seen with him during our walks. If he did, I am sorry that I never told him how sorry I feel. I think of him when I find myself envying others—when I don’t have a good heart.

1. What made the father feel especially proud?
A.He drew lots of love from other people.B.He almost never missed a day at the office.

2. What did the father think of his situation?
A.He didn’t envy people who could walk normally.B.He wanted people to understand him
C.He could always do things the same way as others.D.He sometimes felt sorry for himself.
3. What does the father mean by saying “if things had been different”?
A.If he could join the army.B.If the rules were different.
C.If he was not disabled.D.If he was treated well.
4. What can we infer about the author from the text?
A.His father has been gone for many years.B.He feels sorry for being embarrassed.
C.He doesn’t have a good heart.D.He still feels embarrassed to have his dad.
