For the past six years, Jordan Romero has been running after a dream. That dream has taken him to the top of the world’s highest mountains. The dream came true when the California teenager stepped onto the top of Mount Vinson Massif in Antarctica (南极洲).
On that day—December 24, 2011—Jordan became the youngest person to have climbed the tallest mountain on each of the seven continents(大陆). These mountains are known as the “seven summits(顶峰)”.
It all began when Jordan was 9 years old. He was attracted by a school wall painting that showed the seven summits. Jordan had never climbed a mountain before. But he told his dad that he wanted to climb them ALL!
In fact, Jordan’s dad was an experienced mountaineer. From that day on, Jordan’s parents trained him in top-level mountaineering and climbed every mountain with him. As part of “Team Jordan”, they also became the first family to climb the seven summits together.
Training to climb the highest mountains in the world involves a lot of hard work. But Jordan has always been very active—it’s just the way he lives. Still, there were times when he thought, “Yeah, I want to be done.” But he refused to give up. When others thought he was too young to climb Mount Everest, the world’s highest mountain, he just kept thinking. “All you no-sayers, I’ll show you.” He sure did. When he was 13, he became the youngest person to reach Mount Everest.
He encourages kids to “find your Everest.” That doesn’t mean he wants everyone to start mountain climbing. He means find something you love doing and try your best to make it. “Anything is possible,” Jordan says.

Zhang Dingyu is the director of Wuhan Jinyintan Hospital, which is one of the hospitals in Wuhan, Hubei Province. It is ordered to accept patients with the COVID-19. He has been so busy recently that he goes to bed at about 2 a.m. and gets up around 4 a.m.
Along with more than 600 partners, the 57-year-old doctor has been treating patients since the hospital received the first seven people with the COVID-19.
Zhang is seriously ill, and it is difficult for him to walk. His legs are becoming weaker and weaker because of the illness. But he’s doing his best to walk faster to save time for patients infected with the COVID-19 in Wuhan.
On Feb. 2, 37 patients who were infected with the virus, with the oldest of them being 88, left the hospital after recovering with the help of medical workers. Zhang’s wife is also a medical worker working at another hospital in Wuhan. She was infected with the virus and hospitalized on Jan, 19. She was lucky enough to recover, too.
But Zhang continued working tirelessly, and though it was difficult to move quickly, he said, “I have to run, racing against time to save more patients from the deadly disease. I have never felt such pressure as today.” He added, “For me, my illness is like a sword hanging in the air, but I haven’t got any time to think about it.”
Zhang and his partners have been too tired because of work. “Normally, nurses change shifts every two hours,” he said. “Now the nurses, as well as doctors, must work four or five hours straight without a break, and being too tired will increase the risks of being infected.”
“No matter how serious the situation is, I believe that we’ll beat this disease,” he said.

Wang Yaping, a world famous Chinese name, is an astronaut, and a “space teacher” as well. Tiangong space station welcomed the first woman astronaut.
When China sent Yang Liwei, the first astronaut, into space in 2003, Wang Yaping’s space dream started. She told herself, “My motherland has a man astronaut now. It will be great if I am the first woman astronaut. How I hope to be an astronaut. I must try my best to make it!”
Wang was already a pilot in the Chinese army at that time. And after having safe flights for 1,600 hours over nine years, Wang became a candidate(候选人) to be an astronaut in 2010. She did the same training as men. “The space environment will not change anything just because you are a woman,” she said. The most difficult is the high-G training. “You can see a red button there, and you can press it to stop training if you can’t bear it.” But Wang never used it. “In my heart there is no such a red button. If I press it I will not be a true astronaut.”
Finally, in June 2013 the great day came. She joined the team for the Shenzhou Ⅹ mission. She stayed in space for 15 days, and successfully gave a space class. On October 16, 2021, with the Shenzhou Ⅻ mission she became the first woman astronaut to enter Tiangong space station, and stayed in space for half a year with Zhai Zhigang and Ye Guangfu. The 41-year-old Chinese woman made history, and she gave two more space classes to students on the Earth, so wonderful and attractive. Catherine Coleman, a retired(退休的)NASA(美国航空航天局)astronaut, sent a greeting to Wang before the Shenzhou Ⅻ trip. Coleman said, “When you look out of the window and see the stars and the Earth, billions of women will be looking out that window with you.”
It was not a short and easy way before Wang Yaping became the first woman to enter the Tiangong space station. It is a good example for all of us. Whatever the difficult is, never give up, and you will get over it at last.

When Zhang was teaching at Huaping Minority Middle School, she noticed fewer girls attended school in Huaping. So she started visiting the homes of the girls who had left school and she learned the main reasons. The parents thought that it was useless to send girls for education. Most of them wanted the girls to marry. However, they treated the boys differently. This made Zhang realize that how difficult it was for girls to get an education. She came up with an idea of establishing a special school for girls. Huaping High School for Girls, a free school for girls, was completed in 2008 after overcoming all kinds of difficulties.
Anybody who knows Zhang’s own conditions will be more deeply moved by her. Since the school started, she has been living with her students. And she spent most of her money she had or received on her students, although she has serious health problems herself. Besides her work at school, she also has a part-time job to help the children who have lost their parents. Thanks to her efforts, more than 1,800 girls from poor families have entered universities since 2008. Then their good relationship (关系) broke. It began with a small thing. then bitter (仇恨的) words, and then weeks of silence (沉默). One morning John woke up to find a stream (小溪) between the two farms. “It must be Bob,” John thought.

We talk about something as simple as dinner plans and suddenly, my mother will push the conversation into World War I. She’ll talk about my poor future because I don’t plan to be a doctor. And much to her disappointment, I don’t want to do any job about science, either. In fact, when I had to say that I planned to major in (主修) English and communications, she nearly had a heart problem.
“Why can’t you be like my friend’s son?” she says all the time. Her friend’s son received a four-year scholarship (奖学金) and is now making 70,000 dollars a year as an engineer. I don’t know what to answer except that I simply can’t be like my mom’s friend’s son. I’m the type of person who loves to help out in the community, write until the sun goes down, and most of all, wants to find a job because I love it, not because of a fame or wealth.
I understand why my mother is worried about my future. I’ve seen my mother make less money so that she can’t support me well. She leaves the house around 6:30 am and usually comes home around 5 pm or even 6 pm. However, I want her to know it doesn’t mean I’ll be successful if I become a doctor. I’d rather follow my dreams and create my own future.

Winter may be over, but a group of children in Beijing is still playing and learning a special winter sport. They are dressed for matches. They hold a curved(弯曲的)wooden stick in their hands and wear thick-padded(厚垫肩的)coats, helmets(头盔)and ice skates. They are here to conquer(征服)the ice. They glide(滑行). They often fall down. But they never give up. They are full of energy and pride because Beijing hosts the 2022 Winter Olympics.
Ice hockey(冰上曲棍球)isn’t strong in Chinese sports history and isn’t popular across the country. In the past, ice hockey was mostly popular in northeast China. Only big cities in three provinces(省)in northeast China have their own ice hockey teams.
But now, Beijing, as the host city of the 2022 Winter Olympics, are actively working on the promotion(推广)of winter sports these years. The city sets up 15 ice hockey clubs and 116 youth ice hockey teams (with nearly 2, 000 players). Some schools are used as winter sports special schools. Their students have the chance to learn to skate in PE lessons.
“I believe more and more children in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen will start to learn ice hockey. Thousands of runners did up their running shoes and poured out from the starting line while crowds cheered along the course. Marathons in China are picking up the pace again. According to the Chinese Athletics Association, a total of 133 marathons across the country have been registered(注册)for the first six months of the year. On March 26, more than 300,000 runners took part in 26 marathon events nationwide, reported China Daily.
Teenagers have also taken part in marathons. Xu Qian, a 15-year-old from Suqian, Jiangsu, loves running. He got first place in the 5-kilometer Happy Run of the Jingdong Suqian Marathon held on April 2th. For Xu, it meant months of training and preparation. He runs about 30 to 40 kilometers in local stadiums each week ahead of the run.
“Unlike the 800-meter run at school which is more about speed, a marathon tests a runner’s endurance and mental quality,” he told Teens. When he felt tired during the race, he told himself not to give up. “In long-distance running, the only opponent you have to beat is yourself,” Xu added.
Apart from one’s willpower, kindness from the audience also plays a big part in helping runners get to the finish line. Li Zhouzi from Shanxi took part in a 3-kilometer Kid Run of the Berlin Marathon in Germany in 2019 when she was 10. The support from the people cheering along the way really encouraged her.
“When things were hard, people from across the world cheered me on. Even if it was just the words, ‘keep it up’, it meant a lot to me and I was inspired to keep going to the end,” Li told Teens. She believes that running a marathon is about staying focused on the final goal, not the suffering along the way. “Likewise, our life is also a marathon,” Li said.
