People of Sommaroy, an island in northern Norway where the sun doesn’t set for a full 69 days during the summer, want to make timekeeping obsolete, making this island the world’s first time-free zone.
On this island, the sun doesn’t rise from November to January. The people of Sommaroy try to make the most of summer, when the sun stays up in the sky from May 18 right through to July 26. During this time, it’s common to see people doing all kinds of things at late hours of the “night”—like doing the household chores, swimming or playing ball games in their yards.
Now the people of Sommaroy want to officially declare (宣布) their island is a time-free zone. It may seem like a joke, but locals are taking it seriously, and it’s true that Sommaroy has received a tourism boost (增长) after the plan was announced. Islanders gathered at a town hall meeting to sign a petition (请愿书) for a time free-zone on June 13, 2019. Islanders of Sommaroy plan to make school and working hours more flexible (灵活的). Fishing and tourism are the main industries on this island with a population of little more than 300 people.
When visitors cross the bridge to the island from the mainland, they aren’t greeted with love locks like on similar bridges worldwide. The bridge is covered with watches, as people prepare for entry to the land where time is forgotten.
In the meantime, the people of Sommaroy have a full five weeks of daylight before a sunset, pinks their sky once more. It’s time to put away those clocks.

In August, it is very hot and wet in the southern part of the United States. People there have heart trouble and other kinds of health problems during this month. In the northeast and the middle west, it is very hot sometimes and very cold sometimes. People in these states have more heart trouble after the weather changes in February or March.
The weather can also influence intelligence. For example, in a 1983 study by scientists showed that the IQ of a group of students was very high when a very strong wind came, but after the strong wind, their IQ was 10% lower. The wind can help people have more intelligence. Very hot weather, on the other hand, can make it lower. Students in many schools of the United States often do worse on exams in the hot months of the year (July and August).
Weather also has a strong influence on people’s feelings. Winter may be a bad time for thin people. They usually feel cold these months. They might feel unhappy during cold weather. But fat people may have a hard time in hot summer. At about 18℃, people become stronger.
Low air pressure (气压) may make people forgetful. People leave more bags on buses and in shops on low-pressure days. There is “good weather” for work and health. People feel best at a temperature of about 18℃.
Are you feeling sad, tired, forgetful, or unhappy today? It may be the weather’s fault.

Working in groups of four or five, the little cooks take their responsibilities (责任) very seriously. Soon, they are showing off their own delicious dishes.
“Since last September, the school has set up after-school classes for students, with cooking classes being the most popular”, said Xinhua. It comes after the “double reduction” policy (政策). The policy aims to ease the burdens (负担) of too much homework and off-campus tutoring (课外辅导) for primary and junior high school students.
The policy lists requirements in areas such as reducing the amount and difficulty of homework, as well as improving the quality (质量) of education and after-school services. For example, homework for junior high school students should take no longer than 90 minutes to finish. It gives students more free time for their hobbies and interests. Also, off-campus tutoring has been further regulated (管理) to reduce the burden on students.
“Our homework is clearly less than before,” said 13-year-old Shen Yuzhe from Beijing. “We are not encouraged to buy workbooks any more. The exercises are mainly from the textbook.” According to Shen, teachers have taught at a much slower pace, which gives students enough time to study.
In December, the Ministry of Education reported on the progress (进步) made through the policy so far. Almost all primary and middle schools now offer two-hour after-school services on weekdays. More than 90 percent of students can finish their written homework in the set time. About 92.7 percent of schools have opened after-school arts and sports classes. More than 80 percent of academic tutoring institutions (学科类校外培训机构) have closed down or turned to other fields of business.

Every week in China, millions of people will sit in front of their TVs watching teenagers compete in the Chinese Characters Dictation Competition, in which young competitors must write Chinese characters by hand.
Perhaps the show’s popularity should not be a surprise. Along with gunpowder (火药) and paper, many Chinese people consider Chinese calligraphy to be one of their primary contributions to civilization. Unluckily, many Chinese people are forgetting how to write their own language without the help of computers. Software on smart phones and computers allows users to type in the basic sound of the word using the Latin alphabet (拉丁字母表). The correct character is chosen from a list. The result? It’s possible to recognize characters but forget how to write them.
But there’s still hope for the writing brush. China’s Ministry of Education wants children to spend more time learning how to write. In one Beijing primary school we visited, students practice calligraphy every day in a special classroom with traditional Chinese paintings hanging on the walls. The calligraphy teacher, Shen Bin says: “The ability to write characters is part of Chinese tradition and culture. Students must learn so they don’t forget when they grow up.”

Synonyms (同义词) and Antonyms (反义词)
Synonyms are words that have the similar meanings, such as happy and joyful. Synonyms can be useful when you don’t want to repeat the same word again and again. Antonyms are the words that have the opposite meanings. Life is full of antonyms.
Memorize common prefixes (前缀), roots (根) and suffixes (后缀)
Many English words can be divided into different parts, which are called prefixes, roots and suffixes. A prefix comes at the beginning of a word, a suffix comes at the end of a word, and the root is the main part of a word. For example, the word “happily” is made up of the word “happy” and the suffix“-ly”. However, if you add a prefix “un-” to the word “happy”, the new word becomes “unhappy”, which means not happy. In your vocabulary notebook, make a list of prefixes and suffixes as you come across them. It is one of the keys to success for high-level English learners.
Vocabulary Trees
Vocabulary trees help provide context (语境). Once you’ve drawn a few vocabulary trees, you’ll discover yourself thinking in vocabulary groups. When you see a cup, your mind will quickly relate such words as knife, fork, plate, dishes, etc. By connecting these vocabulary trees into a word web, you can remember more related words together.
1. What is the antonym of the word “usual”?A.Common. | B.Same. | C.Strange. | D.Direct |
A.A prefix. | B.A word root | C.A suffix | D.A word |
A.The development of English | B.Ways to learn a new language |
C.The importance of studying English | D.Ways to increase English vocabulary |
There are many colors in nature. But do you know if a color has weight? If you don’t believe, you may do a small experiment (实验).
First, put two objects with the same weight into two boxes. Then cover the boxes. Wrap (包裹) one box with a red piece of paper, the other with a white piece of paper. Now hold the boxes with your hand one by one. It is certain that you will think the red one is a little heavier.
Why does it happen? A scientist found that different colors have different weight in a man’s mind. So he did many tests and at last he got the result. That is to say, every color has its own weight in our mind. The heaviest color is red, then blue, green, orange, yellow and white.
According to this discovery, scientists say that people accept the color they like, and refuse the color they hate. So your body and mind will be healthy by using the colors you like. Or you’ll be nervous or even get ill. If you stay in a room with red windows, wallpapers and furniture (家具) for two hours, you’ll feel you have been there for four hours. But if the room is blue, you’ll feel you have been there for only one hour. Another example, if a person walks out of a red room and into a blue room, his temperature will fall. That means our body temperature will change when we see different colors.
1. A color has weight in a man’s mind.2. Red is the lightest color in a man’s mind.
3. Using the color you don’t like will keep you healthy.
4. Your temperature will fall when you get into a cool colored room from a warm colored room.
5. According to the passage, you’ll feel you have been there for four hours if you stay in a red room for an hour.
