When it comes to building a better world, young people can make a difference. 13-year-old Genshu Price from Hawaii, USA is a good example. He recycles bottles and cans to help students in Hawaii reach their college dreams.
In the beginning, Genshu recycled bottles and cans to save money for his college tuition (学费). But then he came up with a bigger idea: Why not recycle more bottles and cans to help other students? So he started Bottles4College three years ago. Its goal is to collect and recycle 2 to 4 million bottles and cans each year to help up to 2 students pay for their college tuition.
Genshu said Botles4College was based on four pillars: education, environment, community and lifestyle. “We’re helping the environment by recycling,” he said. “We’re helping education by providing tuition for Hawaiian kids and inspiring them to get a good education. And then we’re bringing communities together. At the same time, the three pillars above become a part of our life so we’re living a great lifestyle.”
Genshu also makes videos and posts them online to teach people how to sort bottles and cans and encourage people to recycle. “We still have a little bit to go to get to the place where we want to be, but no doubt it’s exciting,” Genshu said. “Every can count.”

Research shows that acts of kindness can make us feel better and improve our health. Researchers also say kindness plays an important part in how humans develop. Scientific evidence suggests that we are designed to be kind.
Most animals are only helpful to those in their close “family” groups but are not kind or helpful to strangers. But humans are different. Humans realize that there is not much difference between those close to us and strangers. Strangers can help us if we are kind to them. That is why we help strangers in need. In English there’s an expression: to rely on the kindness of strangers.
Research shows that our bodies can also reward us for being kind to others. Scientists have tested this idea in many experiments over the past 20 years. Psychology professor Sonja Lyubomirsky has found repeatedly that people feel better when they are kind to others, even more so than when they are kind to themselves. “Acts of kindness are very powerful,” she said. In one experiment, she asked people to perform three acts of kindness for other individuals each week. These kind acts include opening a door for someone. She asked a different group to do three acts of self-kindness. People who were kind to others reported feeling happier and more connected to the world.
Lyubomirsky studied a group of people with the disease multiple sclerosis (多发性硬化). She found that they felt better physically when they helped others. Her research showed that people who performed more acts of kindness had less inflammation (发炎) or swelling (肿胀) in their bodies.

But then, he slowed down, bent down and picked up a piece of paper. I soon realized there were all kinds of things in his hands.
This old man never talked to anyone, but he was always stopping to pick up litter. One day, we heard that the old man was hit by a car while running. We also learned the he could not speak English very well. That was why he didn’t talk to anyone. One of the neighbors heard the news and decided to do something. She called the local newspaper and told them the old man’s story.
The reporter then interviewed the old man with the help of a French translator. His name was Bruno Polanski. Mr. Polanski grew up in France, and there was no litter on the street. So when he first saw people drop litter, it really shocked him. He made up his mind to pick up the litter in the new country.
Later, our community decided that we would have a run every spring to pick up litter. We call it the “Polanski Run”. That day, hundreds of kids walk around the community in groups, picking up litter. It has become one of our community’s popular events.

When I was young, my parents and my teachers always told me to pick up any rubbish around me. Each day at school during our lunch break, every student had to find some rubbish. We put it in the bin before we returned to class. Our school was always very clean because everyone spent one or two minutes picking up rubbish every day.
That same idea is now becoming popular around the world, thanks to Take 3. Australian surfer Amanda Marechal and ocean scientist Roberta Dixon Valk came up the idea in 2009. They asked everyone to pick up three pieces of rubbish, instead of 10 or 20. They think it’s an easy thing that people might actually do.
Today, Take 3 is a popular idea around the world, and not just on the beach. Take 3 has gone to the United Kingdom, the United States, Costa Rica and some other countries. Their latest plan is to make an app. It will help people learn more about what kinds of plastic are polluting the ocean.

There was much excitement last year when the UK government said it would ban the sale of new oil cars from 2030. But is that easier said than done? The road to traffic being totally electric is still a long way off. At present, battery(电池) life is a problem—a fully charged(充电) battery won’t take you as far as a full box of oil.
Of course, technology is always improving. Some of the biggest technology companies, like Google and Tesla, are spending a lot of money developing electric cars. And most of the big car factories are now making them too. Colin Herron, an expert on low-carbon car technology, told the BBC: “Solid state batteries will take a big step forward. They will first be used on mobile phones and computers before they are used in cars.” These will charge more quickly and make cars go farther.
Cost is another problem that may stop people changing to electric power. But some countries offer encouragements, such as cutting prices by reducing taxes(税), and not charging for road tax or parking. Some also provide special roads for electric cars to be driven on, passing past traditional cars which might be stuck in jams. These kinds of ways have made Norway the country with the most electric cars on average at more than thirty electric cars per 1000 people.
But Colin Herron warns that “electric drive” doesn’t mean a zero-carbon future. “The car has to be built, the battery has to be built, and the electricity does come from somewhere.” Maybe it’s time to think about making fewer journeys or using public transport.

C.the situation of present traffic | D.the present situation of oil cars |

Most of the class drew a turkey or other traditional things. But Douglas drew a different kind of picture. He drew a hand. Just an empty hand.
Douglas was a different boy. He was poor and unhappy. As other children played, Douglas was likely to stand close by the teacher’s side.
His classmates were surprised at his picture. One child guessed it was the hand of a farmer, because farmers raise turkeys. Others guessed it was the hand of God, for God feeds us.
The teacher asked him whose hand it was. The little boy said in a low voice, “It’s yours.”
She remembered the times she had taken his hand and walked with him here and there. She often said, “Take my hand, Douglas, we’ll go outside.” Or, “Let me show you how to hold your pencil.” Or, “Let’s do this together.” Douglas was most thankful for his teacher’s hand.
