【推荐1】The human body is a living machine, and, like all machines, it needs “fuel” to supply it with energy. This is provided by the food we eat. But how much do we need to stay healthy?

The energy value of food is usually measured in calories(卡). A calorie is the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of 1 kg of water by 1℃. The number of calories people need per day is different, as the picture shows.

Also, the number of calories you use at any one moment normally depends on the activity you are in. For example, you need more calories for standing than for sitting, more for running than for walking, and so on.

The energy in food is in the form of three kinds of chemical materials—carbohydrate(碳水化合物), protein(蛋白质) and fat. Carbohydrate provides 3.8 Cal /gm of the energy, protein 4.0 Cal/gm, and fat 8.8 Cal/gm. Each food contains different amounts of these materials, as the round pictures show.

(P= protein          C= carbohydrate       F=fat)

文章大意:本文主要讲述西伯利亚遭遇八万年一遇的高温天气,俄罗斯西伯利亚小镇维尔霍扬斯克出现38摄氏度高温,打破北极圈内有记录以来的最高温度纪录。

【推荐2】A heatwave (热浪) appears in Siberia recently. The temperature reaches 38℃, which was “almost impossible” without the influence (影响) of manmade climate change, scientists said on Wednesday.

The five hottest years in history have appeared in the last five years and it’s probable that 2020 will be the hottest ever recorded. Earth’s poles (极地) are warming faster than the rest of the planet, and temperatures in Siberia were more than 5℃ hotter than average between January and June. One town, Verkhoyansk, recorded a temperature of 38℃—breaking the records in history. Andrew Ciavarella, senior scientist at Britain’s Met Office, described the findings as “unbelievable”.

The influence of climate change on extreme (极端的) weather events such as super storms and droughts is now clear, but in fact scientists have not been able to connect an individual (单独的) event with global warming until recently.

The long-lasting heat will happen less than once every 80,000 years without climate change caused by human. This makes the heatwave almost impossible in a climate that has not been warmed by greenhouse gas. Carbon pollution has made the extreme events at least 600 times more likely to take place.

1. According to the passage, which year will be the hottest ever recorded?
A.2020.B.2019.C.2015.D.2025.
2. We can infer that the temperature of Verkhoyansk is always _______.
A.more than 38℃B.less than 38℃C.at 38℃D.not mentioned
3. Extreme weather events don’t include _______.
A.long-lasting heatB.super stormsC.droughtsD.greenhouse gas
4. Which of the following is NOT true according to the last paragraph?
A.Human activities cause less long-lasting heat.
B.Greenhouse gas is one of the reasons causing heatwave.
C.Carbon pollution causes more extreme events.
D.Some climate changes are caused by human.
5. In which section of the newspaper can you find this passage?
A.Sport.B.Health.C.Environment.D.Travel.

But according to a new study, it may also be known the symptoms (症状) of Parkinson’s disease by several years.

There is no treatment for Parkinson’s disease, a disease that influences the brain and causes symptoms like shaking and difficulty speaking and moving. For years, doctors and researchers have tried to find ways to slow down the symptoms or make them more manageable for patients.

To find out more, researchers from the Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine in China monitored (监测) a group of 330 people with Parkinson’s disease at different times between January 2016 and June 2021. One group of 143 people did tai chi a week for one hour, while the other group of 187 people didn’t.

The results came out in October 2023. They showed that the progression (发展) of the disease was slower in the group that did tai chi. This group also had better balance and movement, fewer falls and less back pain.

The researchers said the size of the studied group was quite small, so they could not prove that tai chi was the only reason for these improvements. But according to these results, they said that tai chi can be used to manage symptoms of Parkinson’s patients and keep patients active.
