阅读下面短文,完成各小题。

Experts say the way you design your home could play a role in weight. (A) It may have an effect on your figure (身材). You can make your environment work for you instead of against you. Here are some ways to turn your home into part of diet plan.

Open the curtains (窗帘) and turn up the lights. Dark environments are more likely (可能的) to encourage overeating, for people are often less self-conscious (难为情) when they’re in poorly lit places. If your home doesn’t have enough window light, get more lights and decorate the place with brightness.

Mind the colors. Research suggests warm colors affect our appetites (食欲). In one study, people who have dinner in a blue room ate 33 percent less than those in a yellow or red room. Warm colors like yellow make food more delicious, while cold colors make us feel less hungry. So when it’s time to paint the walls of your house, go blue.

Don’t forget the clock or the radio. People who eat slowly tend to (倾向于) have about 70 fewer calories (卡路里) per meal those who rush through their meals. Begin keeping record of the time, and try to make dinner last at least 30 minutes. And while you’re at it, actually sit down to eat. (B) When you have problems slowing down the speed of eating, you may turn on relaxing music.

Choose the small dishes. Big dishes can easily make us fat. We will eat about 22 percent more when using a 12-inch plate instead of a 10-inch plate. When we choose a large dish over a smaller one, we will eat more calories.

文章大意:本文主要介绍了撒哈拉沙漠的相关信息以及在撒哈拉沙漠生存的建议。

【推荐1】The Sahara is the largest desert in the world. It covers 11 countries in North Africa and is over 9 million square kilometers.

In the Sahara, temperatures are very different during the day and at night. During the day, the hottest time is between 2 p. m. and 4 p. m.—when temperatures rise to 33℃. But it is very cold at night. The coldest time is at 4 a. m.—when temperatures fall to -1℃.

Because of the extreme temperatures in the desert, it is a very difficult place to survive. Marco Rivera, our survival expert, has some advice.

Take warm clothes and a blanket. You will need a hat, long trousers and a thick sweater to keep you warm at night. Clothes protect yourself from the sun and keep water in your body. You will also need a warm blanket at night.

Try to drink some water at least once every hour. You need your water to last as long as possible. If you eat, you will get thirsty and your water will run out soon. You can eat a little food slowly, but only to stop yourself from feeling very hungry.

Find a warm place to sleep at night. A small place near a tree or a rock will be the warmest. But be careful before you decide where to sleep. Dangerous animals like snakes also like to sleep in these places. Look carefully for animals before you lie down.

【推荐2】While you are at the bookstore, you may be faced with a difficult decision: e-books or paper books? Each one has its advantages and disadvantages. Making the best decision depends on a number of factor (因素).
An e-reader can carry a whole library wherever you go, which is great for travelers or those who always want a choice of reading material Although e-readers are convenient, high levels of screen brightness from an electronic device(电子设备) can cause eye problems. A study in the Information Science Research found that young people preferred e-readers, like smart phones or iPads. That’s why most teenagers are short-sighted.
Many book lovers still prefer paper books and value the feeling of them. Paper books are very well designed, they look and smell good, and they carry with them a more human touch. Avid (热衷的)readers prefer reading on paper. Perhaps this is their choice because paper books give them a sense of ownership. It is reported that reading on paper rather than an electronic screen is better for memory and focus. But paper books are heavy and they are not convenient to carry.

Does blue light actually influence your health? Blue light before bedtime can make it harder to sleep, and the screens on phones, computers and televisions give out a lot of blue light. It is true. But if you think blue light as a main problem influencing your sleep or your eye health, it’s time to think in another way.

A researcher says that blue light is part of sunlight, and your eyes are under the sunshine all the time. You’re fine. There are studies of mice that have found blue light can be bad for the eyes, but mice are nocturnal creatures (夜行性动物) whose eyes are different from ours. In a sense, their eyes can protect themselves.

However, adding more protection isn’t likely (可能) to help. You can buy glasses to stop the blue light, but the researcher points out that the way will waste your money. You could get the same effect (影响) just by holding your phone far from your face. Try it now and see if you notice a difference. No? Then it shouldn’t surprise you that a recent research result said that blue-blocking (防蓝光的) glasses have no special effect on sleep quality.

If you’re worried about your eye health or your ability (能力) to get to sleep on time, you already know what to do: put the screens away at bedtime. Read a book or find something else to do. While you’re using screens, take a 20-second break every 20 minutes.
