According to CNN, women still experience pay inequality (不平等) everywhere, whether you’re Hollywood’s top talent or you work in a retail store (零售店).”
Gender equality has improved in some areas like education. However, when females enter the workplace, they may find things are still difficult. Of the 145 countries and regions surveyed in a WEF (世界经济论坛) report, 97 have more female students than male students in universities. But only four of those countries and regions have a majority of female leaders in the workplace. Women tend to (往往会) be viewed on the basis of their performance, while men are often promoted (升职) for their potential (潜力),” the Washington Post wrote.
Old thinking about men and women is still influencing women’s careers, according to Saadia Zahidi, a WEF official. For example, many people believe boys are better at science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). And even today, women make up only a third of the students in these fields worldwide. Girls and women need to master the skills and training that are needed for the jobs of tomorrow, especially in the STEM fields, said Zahidi. The gender gap (性别差距) in the workplace is not just about less pay for women. It’s also about women making sure their pay shows their value. Actress Sandra Bullock once said, “Once we start changing how we think about women, the pay gap will take care of itself.”

The institute compared costs using different countries’ GDP per person. GDP per person is the total value of all the work done and things made in a country in one year, divided by the number of people who live there. And the report said the average cost of raising a child in South Korea to the age of 18 is 7.8 times the country’s GDP per person.
In China, the average cost of raising a child is about $75,000, which is more than 6. 3 times the GDP per person. It’s even more expensive to raise a child in Chinese cities, with an average cost of almost $94,000.
South Korea and China both have very low birth rates. South Korea’s is the lowest in the world — and with those costs, it might be easy to see why.
Japan also has a low birth rate, but it costs about 4.3 times the GDP per person to raise a child there. It’s 4.1 times in the US, and 2.1 times in Australia.
But it’s not only money that parents have to spend — it’s time too. And this is another reason young people are choosing not to have children, according to the institute.
For example, it said that in China, between 2010 and 2018, the amount of time parents spent helping their children with elementary school homework increased from less than four hours to almost six hours per week.

In fact, scientists have long believed that sleep is like food ——if we don't get enough of it, we might get sick or even die. But now they are starting to wonder just how much sleep we need.
Researchers from London recently did a study on fruit flies (果蝇). They found that flies that slept for very short periods of time —— about 72minutes a day —— still lived about as long as flies that slept for longer time. One of the flies slept for just 4 minutes each day. This has led the researchers to wonder if sleep is less necessary than we thought before.
Humans are very different from fruit flies. Sleep is when our bodies do a lot of work, for example, repairing tissue(组织)and growing muscle (肌肉).Sleeping allows our bodies to get a good rest.
But can we really die from not sleeping? No human has died so far from staying awake for too long. The world record for sleeplessness is held by Randy Gardner from the US, who stayed awake for 11 days and 24 minutes in 1964. However, Gardner did experience serious side effects (副作用).
Scientists have not yet found any animals that don't sleep at all. Even animals that only sleep for short periods are not completely sleepless. This suggests that a short sleep is necessary, even in short-sleeping animals, according to a German scientist.
1. What does the study on fruit flies show?A.Fruit flies sleep less than humans do. |
B.Flies need 72 minutes of sleep every day. |
C.Sleep is as necessary for animals as it is for humans. |

For example, Chicago public schools hurt arts education when it fired (解雇) over 1000 teachers. Among them, 10 percent of the teachers taught art or music, according to The Washington Times. In fact, this is not just a problem in the US. In other countries, such as China and UK, music classes are not thought to be as important as ones like science, math and history. That’s partly because music is not seen as a very important life skill, and it isn’t tested. Many students are busy with schoolwork, so parents and students choose to focus on subjects that are tested more often.
However, learning music is beneficial (有益的) in many ways. When playing music, you need different abilities to work together. It is not as simple as it looks. For example, when playing the piano, people see music notes and decode (解码) them in their brains. They also use their fingers to make sounds. You need to deal with all these things at the same time.
Music has a special connection with science as well. You can see that many scientists are good at playing music: Einstein played the violin, and German physicist Max Planck was talented in playing the piano.
