①Does a lake on fire sound impossible? If you think that water can’t burn, you need to learn more about pollution.
②Let’s go and see Bellandur Lake in the city of Bengaluru in India. Bengaluru is the center for many heavy industries. Electrical and electronic goods, computer parts and parts for planes and space rockets are produced there. Much of the waste from these and a large amount of the wastewater from local people run into the lake.
③These harmful mixed things have led the lake to become covered with a thick white foam (泡沫) that looks like snow when seen from far away. When the level of the water rises, the foam does too and covers nearby areas, even roads. When a fire breaks out on the lake, it is both frightening and dangerous. People who live or work near the lake also get seriously ill because of the pollution.
④The fire has drawn a great deal of attention recently, but burning lakes are nothing new. Pollution mainly happens in developing countries like India today. In the past, it mainly took place in Europe and America. Cuyahoga River, a river in America, had caught fire at least 13 times. The fire that caused the most attention was in 1969 when oil-covered areas on the river were set on fire by sparks (火花) from a passing train. The fire reached a height of over five floors and burned for about half an hour. By that time, people in America were more aware of its dangers and wanted to change.
⑤As a result, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was founded in1970 and the Clean Water Act (1972) was put into use. This Act required all rivers throughout America be clean enough to safely allow swimmers and fish to pass through by 1983. Due to these efforts, the Cuyahoga River has never had another fire and over 60 different species of fish live in the river.
⑥If history is a guide, will it be possible for people in India to bring an end to the pollution by changing the laws in their country, too? Like many nations, it’s necessary to raise awareness of environmental protection among the general public. All of us must act!

Probably not. But that’s what kids in Yemen are experiencing. Experts said Yemen is going to be the first country in the world to run out of water. According to report, the capital, Sana, will run out of drinking water as early as 2025.
Because of the shortage, the government often cuts the water supply(供应).Hannan, an 18-year-old from Lahej, told Times, “In a good week we’ll have a water supply all week. But then the following week there will be water only for a day or two.”
Hannan said only rich people have enough water to use. They can buy water from the shops or from the water trucks. Private companies own the trucks. They travel around the city every day to sell water--at very high prices. “ A lot of people can’t afford it,” she said.
The average(平均)person in Yemen uses 100 to 200 cubic(立方)metres of water every year. That is fat below the international water poverty(贫困)line of 1,000 cubic metres.
The government is thinking of making use of seawater. But it will cost a lot and it may not happen soon enough to help the people pf Yemen.

When it comes to looking at the night sky, too much light makes it difficult for us to watch some of life’s most wonderful sights: stars, planets and even galaxies (星系).
Too much light at night may even affect human health, but scientists are not sure of that.
In order to prevent things from going worse, governments and some organizations are working to reduce light pollution.
Hopefully, in the near future, humans can enjoy the beautiful sky again and all the wildlife will live a peaceful life, too.

②Some other cities in the southern part of China, like Chengdu and Guangzhou, are also becoming “thirsty”, the Paper reported. Compared (相比) with northern areas, southern areas have more rain and are close to more rivers and lakes. So why are they still short on water?
③In big cities like Shenzhen and Guangzhou, populations are growing fast. As a result, people and factories need more and more water. Each person in Shenzhen has about only 200 cubic meters of water each year. It’s 1/12 of the country’s average (平均水平). According to the United Nations, it is an“absolute (绝对的) water shortage" when the number is below 500 cubic meters.
④Climate change is making the water problem worse. For example, most cities in Guangdong depend on (依赖于) the Dongjiang River as their main source (来源) of water. In 2021, the river was reported to be drying up. Because of climate change, there’s also less snow in the mountains of Tibet. The snow has long been the source of water for many areas in China. Those mountains might provide less water in the future.
⑤There are other reasons for water shortages. For example, water pollution makes it harder to get clean drinking water. Factories and farms don’t use water efficiently (有效地). Some cities have enough rainfall, but don’t have big lakes or reservoirs to store water. The water just goes into the sea.

C.Big southern cities are short of water because it rains less there and they are far away from rivers. |
D.Water in big lakes and reservoirs usually goes into the sea without being stored and used. |
A.To talk about terrible results of water shortage. |
B.To call on people to protect water resources. |
C.To blame (责怪) people for causing water shortage in China. |

Do you always feel lonely? When do you feel lonely? Is loneliness a good feeling? Nowadays more and more people are having this kind of feeling in their daily life. When someone feels lonely, he or she will have an experience of being alone because of low levels of social contact* and relationships*.
There are two kinds of loneliness: emotional* loneliness and social loneliness. Emotional loneliness is about the relationship between parents and their children. When children leave their parents for a while, they usually show the pain, such as crying and trying to search for their parents. Therefore, emotional loneliness is caused by leaving a person that someone is close to, such as a parent. On the other hand, social loneliness is the loneliness that one experiences when he or she leaves a wide social network*. One doesn’t feel that he or she is a member of a group, or one doesn’t have friends to talk to when he or she is sad.
Besides, loneliness is different from being alone. Being alone is about not having contact with people. But loneliness is a subjective experience: if people think they are lonely, then they are lonely. People can be lonely when they are alone, or in a group. What makes people lonely is the fact that they want more social interaction*. People can be in a group and feel lonely because they don’t get to talk to enough people. On the other hand, one can be alone and not feel lonely, though there is no one around him or her. That person is not lonely because maybe he or she doesn’t want to have social interaction* at that time.
So, what about you? Will you feel lonely if you stay alone? Or you just enjoy the time being with yourself.

You can understand how to speak and understand speech during your first few years of life. No one taught you how to do it. Learning to read and write took a lot more effort. Reading doesn’t come naturally to people, but most of us have learned how. Eighty-six percent of the world’s population is literate (有读写能力的), and the number has been increasing for centuries. Literacy makes it possible to make a world filled with books, websites, text messages, road signs, and more.
But the world of information is changing. Why send a long letter or text when you can share photos or videos instead? Why learn from a book when you can learn from a video online or practice a skill in virtual (虚拟的) reality? Why read magazines when you can listen to podcasts (播客)?
Could a growing number of people take part in today’s world without reading or writing at all? Technology makes it possible. Most of our devices (设备) now talk to us and take spoken commands (命令). Smart cars ask where we will go and then give directions. Software can also read text aloud or turn speech into text. These interactions aren’t perfect — the software still makes silly mistakes. But it’s getting better and better. It’s possible to imagine a future world where all of our communication with our devices and each other is spoken.
But reading and writing are powerful tools. For one, most people read faster than they speak. A podcaster or audio book teller speaks at around 150 to 160 words per minute, while a strong reader can read through a text at 300 to 400 words per minute. That’s twice as fast! Research has also found that people remember more information and stay more interested when they read as compared to listening.
Learning to read also creates new connections in the brain. With the invention of reading, human beings rearranged the very organization of our brain, which in turn expanded (扩张) the ways we were able to think, which changed the intellectual evolution (智力进化) of our human beings. Would we really choose to give up that progress?
What do you think? Do you hope people keep on reading and writing, or will technology make literacy out of date?
1. From the passage, we know that ________.A.reading can slow down the evolution of brain |
B.most of the devices can react to people’s spoken orders |
C.fewer and fewer people are having a chance to get educated |
D.listening helps people remember more information and stay more interested |
A.people like magazines better than podcasts |
B.people are born to be able to read and write |
C.the invention of smart devices can rearrange our brain |
D.reading and writing are more important than listening and speaking |
A.Will humans of the future rearrange the brain? |
B.Will humans of the future expand the ways to think? |
C.Will humans of the future know how to read and write? |
D.Will humans of the future depend on the technological devices? |
