In Tianjin, China, a group of people are waiting at the bus stop. Soon, the special bus comes to the bus stop. It looks like a panda with black ears and black eyes. After getting on the bus, people only need to buy their tickets by scanning(扫描)their hands! About one minute later, the bus begins itself-driving mode. When the traffic lights turn red or when it reaches the bus stop, it stops automatically. There is also a robot on the bus. People can talk to it and ask it for help. If there is a bad person on the bus, the robot will call the police. “It’s very convenient,” says a woman taking the bus. “And kids love it.”
A company called Deep Blue Technology makes this kind of buses. They’re working in ten cities all over China. More cities in China will put this kind of buses into use this year. I think soon you can take the bus in your city.
Now smart buses are no longer buses in the future. Would you like to take a ride on the smart bus?

Many years ago, the problem was not so serious because there weren’t so many people. In other words, the more people, the more pollution. Now man is slowly polluting the whole world.
Air pollution is still the most serious. It’s not good for living things in the world.
Many countries don’t let people burn anything bad for air in houses and factories in the city. Pollution by SO2 is now the most dangerous pollution. It’s partly caused by heavy traffic. People say it’s best to ride bicycles. When you are riding, there is no pollution. But even in developed countries, most people don’t go to work by bicycle. It’s not because bicycles are expensive or people are tired if they ride to work. It’s because cars are more convenient (方便的), so more people go to work by car, and then the situation is getting worse and worse. In my opinion, we can make it difficult and expensive for drivers to drive their cars into the city. They will go back to use their bicycles.

Everybody can drive it easily, just like riding a bike. Even children and old people can drive them to schools or parks.
If everyone drives such cars in the future, there will be less pollution in the air. There will be more space for all the cars in cities, and there will also be more space for people to walk in the streets.
The little cars of the future will cost less money to buy and to drive. These little cars can go only 65 kilometers an hour, so driving will be safer. The cars of the future will be fine for going around the city but they will not be useful for a long trip.
This kind of cars can save a lot of gas(汽油). They will go 450 kilometers, then they have to stop for more gas. They are nice cars, aren't they?

The Lever
There are many modern inventions that are levers. A pair of scissors is a lever. Also, when you ride on a seesaw (跷跷板) in the playground, you’re using a lever. The board rests on a point in the middle. When you push down on one end of the board, the other end goes up.
The Wheel and Axle
A wheel and axle (车轴) is a simple machine, but important for many modern inventions. An axle goes into the middle of a wheel, making it easy to turn. Without the wheel and axle, we wouldn’t have cars, trucks and bicycles. They all use a wheel and axle.
The Ramp
A ramp is a flat (平的) surface that has one high end and one low end. This simple machine makes it easier and safer to go up or down. People in wheelchairs use ramps to go in and out of buildings. There are many ramps in nature, too. They are called hills and mountains!
The Wedge
A wedge is like two ramps put together so that one edge (边缘) is sharp. You might ask, “When would I need a wedge?” If you enjoy eating, you need one almost every day! A knife and a fork are both wedges which cut into food. So is an axe (斧子), which people use to cut wood in to pieces.

Bridges are built over roads, rivers, or railways. They appeared a long time ago. Back then, they were built with stones, ropes and logs (原木). Some were very simple, like a footbridge made out of a big tree.
Bridges are a mix of math, physics, design, and architecture (建筑) . They are designed by skilled engineers and they take years to build.
Bridges must be strong enough to support not only their own weight, but also the weight of the people and vehicles (交通工具). They must last a long time and be built in a way that protects them from earthquakes, strong winds, and freezing.
Arch bridges were invented a long time ago by the Romans. They were built out of stone or brick.
Beam bridges are horizontal (水平的) beams supported by many columns (柱子).
Suspension bridges have a tower on either side. The towers are connected by cables. They are more modern, with the first ones being built in the early 19th century.
The oldest bridge in the world is the Zhaozhou Bridge in China.
A.It’s an arch bridge made out of stone that was built in 605 A.D. |
B.The three main types of bridges are arch (拱),beam (梁)and suspension (悬吊). |
C.The present London Bridge is more than 100 feet wide. |

A lot of teachers agree to use iPads in language learning. They say students now have much more time to discuss with each other in the classroom. Students can use iPads to prepare for discussion. The teachers also say that iPads allow students to learn at their own pace. Some students might listen to a dialogue only once and understand it, so they can save time for doing other things. However, other students might need to listen to the same dialogue again and again to understand it. Using iPads is especially helpful to students who are learning a language at different paces. There are other advantages for students. By using iPads, they can pay more attention to the material and learn more. Teaching notes are kept in their iPads and are easy to find. Some students spend more time studying now.
Many parents complain that iPads are doing harm to students. They worry that students might use iPads to download teaching notes and use them to cheat during exams. Some believe that iPads may separate students from each other.
If a student spends more time watching videos on an iPad, he will have fewer chances to talk with others. Technologies are already a part of students’ lives.
As for cheating, teachers can ask students to hand in their iPads when they take exams.
Education needs to make changes as technology is playing an important part now. We should look forward to a wonderful future when iPads and other technologies can be used a lot in the classroom.

This idea for improving our climate comes from a group of US NASA (美国航空航天局) engineers and American astronomers. They say their plan could add another six billion years to the useful lifetime of our planet—hopefully doubling its working life.
The plan put forward by Dr. Laughlin, and his colleagues Don Korycansky and Fred Adams, needs carefully directing a comet or asteroid (小行星) so that it passes close by our planet and sends some of its gravitational energy (重力势能) to Earth.
“Earth’s orbital speed would increase as a result and we would move to a higher orbit away from the sun,” Laughlin said.
Engineers would then direct their comet so that it passed close to Jupiter (木星) or Saturn(土星). The comet would pick up energy from one of these giant planets. Later its orbit would bring it back to Earth, and the process would be repeated.
In the short term, the plan provides an ideal way to worldwide warming, although the team was actually worried about a much greater danger. The sun is certain to heat up in about a billion years and so “seriously compromise” our biosphere (生物圈)—by cooking us.
That’s why the group decided to try to save Earth.
The plan has one or two worrying sides, however. For a start, space engineers would have to be very careful about how they directed their asteroid or comet towards Earth. The smallest miscalculation (误算) in orbit could fire it straight at Earth—with deadly results.
There is also the question of the moon. As the present issue of Scientific American magazine points out, if Earth was pushed out of its present location, it is “most likely the moon would be stripped (剥离) away from Earth,” it states. This would greatly change our planet’s climate.

C.Earth will become too hot for mankind to keep alive. |
D.The moon is moving farther and farther away from Earth. |
A.12 billion | B.6 billion | C.18 billion | D.24 billion |
A.The comet might hit Earth and man might lose the moon. |
B.Earth might be moved too far away and man might die because of the coldness. |
C.The comet might hit Jupiter or Saturn and never return to Earth. |
D.Earth’s working life might be greatly shortened. |
A.provide | B.benefit (受益) | C.share | D.endanger |

It is also a study that tries to make computers “smart”. John McCarthy, a scientist, came up with the name “artificial intelligence” over 60 years ago. Many things such as learning and problem solving can be done by computers, though not in the same way as people do.
An unusual goal of AI research is to create computer programs. They can learn, solve problems, and think logically (逻辑地). Now AI can successfully understand human speech, recognize (识别) human faces, operate (操作) self-driving cars and compete in some game systems like playing chess. However, some people also think AI a danger to humans if it develops too quickly. A famous British scientist was also not for this kind of technology.
Math is the basic language of AI. If students are good at math, they will be more probable to become successful AI designers (设计者) in the future. We need not only bright students, but also average (普通的) students. As for average students, if they get enough math skills, they can also become successful AI designers. Besides, a good knowledge of computer science is also necessary for AI designing.
Scientists hope to create AI with creativity and feelings. The AI can possibly understand human feelings or create art. Many ways and tools have been tried to discover this wide and exciting field.

You say to your shirt, “Turn red.” It turns from blue to red. In 2055, “smart clothes” can change the color or shape as you like.
You walk into the kitchen. You get the milk, but you hear a voice, “You shouldn’t drink that!” Your fridge remembers the information about the milk. It knows that the milk is not fresh. In 2055, every household appliance (家用电器) is like your servant (仆人).
It’s time to go to work. In 2055, cars drive themselves. Just tell your “smart car” where to go. On the way, you can call a friend with your watch.
Such “smart technology (科技)” is all around you. So will all these things come true? “All these will come true, and maybe even better. I am looking forward to the new life.” says a scientist.

Workers in our city are changing “WC” signs all over the city. The government is spending much money changing all the bad English on signs and restaurant menus. Many other places in China are following our steps.
“WC, or water closet, is old-fashioned English. It sounds dirty to me,” says Charlie Shifflet, a young man from the US. The old sign will become “Gents/Men” and “Ladies/Women”.
“I see lots of poor English in everyday life, and not only on signs,” he says. “I know what they mean. But they are Chinglish(中式英语), not real English. For example, when someone says to me ‘My hometown is Henan Province’, I know he should say: ‘My hometown is in Henan Province’. ‘Hometown’ is a smaller place in a province.” The common mistakes he picked up include “Not Entry”, which should be “No Entry”, “Direction of Airport” should be changed to “To the Airport”. And it is “room rate”, not “room price”. And remember to “Keep off the grass”, rather than “Care of the green”.
1. What does the writer think of the use of “WC”?

Many "How to" books give advice on careers (职业). They tell you how to choose a career and how to succeed at it. If you fail, however, you can buy a book called “How to Turn Failure into Success”. If you would like to become very rich, you can buy the book “How to Make a Million”. If you never make any money at all, you may need a book called “How to Live on Nothing”. One of the most popular types of books is one that helps you with personal problems. If you want to have a better love of life, you can read “How to Succeed at Love Every Minute of Your Life”. If you are tired of books on happiness, you may prefer a book called “How to Make Yourself Miserable”.
Many of these books help people use their time better. Some people want books which will give them useful information about sports, hobbies, and travel. Other people use their free time to make repairs and improvements on their homes. They prefer books which give step by step instruction on how to repair things like plumbing (卫生管道工程) and electrical wiring, or on how to redecorate (重新装饰) or enlarge a house.
Why have "How to" books become so popular? Probably because life has become so complex(复杂的). Today people have far more free time to use, more choices to make, and more problems to solve. "How to" books help people deal with modern life.
