When much of the world shut down due to COVID-19, a family of four living in New York, decided to bring home six baby chicks. The plan was to raise them to provide the family with fresh eggs. What they hadn’t expected was the bond (情感纽带) that would form between these chicks and their nine-year-old daughter, Sophie.
Sophie fell in love with the baby chicks the moment they came home. She named the chicks Trixie, Bearty, Sweet Pea, Speedie, Captain Flint, and Adrian. She spent much of her time playing with them, reading to them, and even making them their own cardboard houses. She was even upset when her parents wouldn’t allow the chicks to sleep in her bed with her. “They’re really cute and warm. I like to hug them,” said Sophie, “Bearty is my favorite. She likes to go for a walk with me.”
The six chicks served as a distraction (分心的事物) during a time of loneliness and disease, but as the world began to settle into its new normal and the chicks grew into full-grown chickens, the bond continued to grow. Sophie liked to bring a chicken with her wherever her parents would allow. She even dressed as a giant chicken for Halloween and brought Trixie along for trick or treat. The chickens kept Sophie company during her online classes, and even joined in on the family photo. The bond between Sophie and these chickens was unbreakable.
However, the beloved Captain Flint died suddenly because of an accident. Sophie was heartbroken.
She mourned (哀悼) by painting Captain Flint and wearing a necklace with a photo of the chicken. “Her chickens are teaching her about love, loss, and pain. Sophie has handled it well,” said Sophie’s mom, “In a few short months, these chickens have taught us to relax, accept situations we can’t change, and find joy where we can. They’ve brought us comfort during uncertain times and changed our lives. We are thankful.”

Everyone faces difficulties in their life. Daniel Kish was born with a special eye illness and lost his eyesight before he was only 14 months old.
Soon after, however, he started to do an amazing thing. He learned to make clicks(咔哒声) with his tongue to help him move around. Kish now moves about using sonar(声呐). He is so good at it that he can ride a bicycle by himself on public roads. And he started the organization World Access for the Blind(WAFTB) in 2000, teaching others how to use sonar. In the interview with National Geographic, he explains how the sonar works.
“When I make a click sound, it produces sound waves. These waves reflect off surfaces all around and return to my ears. My brain then deals with the sound and turns it into pictures in my mind. Each click is like a camera flash, which helps me make a 3D picture of my surroundings for hundreds of feet. It’s like having a conversation with the environment.”
Kish feels it is exciting to ride a bike using a sonar, although he needs to click twice a second, much more than he usually does. “It may sound a bit dangerous to move around the world in this way,” he says. “But most people in the world live in fear of things that they imagine. I love hiking and mountain-biking. I go almost everywhere. And I’ve never had an accident and hurt myself.”
He is happy to be able to help more blind children to improve their life. “We’ve served over 10,000 students in nearly 40 countries,” he tells the reporter. “Many students are surprised how quickly results come. Seeing isn’t in the eyes. It’s in the mind.”

In 2015, Liu Weixue gave up a well-paid job as a designer to learn from his grandfather the traditional art of making Yuhang oil paper umbrellas. “I fell in love with the art at a very young age. I want to bring it to life.” Liu said. “When it rains, someone uses the umbrella—that’s what I want to see.”
There are more than 70 steps, including making bamboo ribs (竹伞骨) and pasting (样) papers. It takes at least a week to make an umbrella. After mastering the skills, Liu opened a studio (工作坊) and worked with local umbrella-making masters.
In order to win the hearts of young people, Liu improved the oil paper umbrellas. As the traditional paper breaks easily, he used a thicker (更厚的) paper. He uses a lighter kind of bamboo to make the ribs, so the umbrellas weigh less. As young people like hand-painted pictures, he invites painters to draw patterns (图案) on the umbrella cover.
Since online shopping is popular, Liu opened an online shop to sell umbrellas. It now has more than 80,000 followers. Still, Liu doesn’t hurry. To ensure quality (保证质量), his studio makes only 1,000 umbrellas each year.

My feelings were the same as the fine weather on that day when I was passing by a yard sale. I decided to stop and see what the lady was selling. The woman was an old lady with health problems.
Of all her used things on the table, the toy plane was what I wanted most. My son was sure to love it. What’s more, I wanted so much to buy something from her because she was poor and suffered from illness. I was expecting to spend a few dollars until she told me that she had to take the toy plane out of them. With a puzzled expression, I asked her why.
“That is my son’s fifth birthday present.” she said.
“Your son’s fifth birthday present?” I said in surprise. “But how old is he now?”
“Oh, he should be 50 this year, but he died 10 years ago. He used to enjoy it as a child. ”
That broke my heart! At that moment I knew I had to do all I could to help her. I asked her how much all of her things would be worth. She replied, “$75.”

When I opened the box at my 12th birthday party, I couldn't believe my eyes. I really got a cell phone! As soon as I got to my school the next morning I showed off my phone and asked everyone for their number. I wouldn't listen to the teachers because I was too busy on my phone.

A week later I tried going a whole day without a cell phone and it didn’t go that badly I had so much fun because I was actually spending time with my family and caring about them. From that day,I had a different idea towards cell phones.
Phones really take you away from the rest of the world. I'm not saying that phones are bad and not to use them but you do have to spend some time with your family and not play with your phone all day, My phone took away time from my homework and from my family.
