Reading is the key to school success and, like any skill, it takes practice. A child learns to walk by practicing until he no longer has to think about how to put one foot in front of the other. An excellent sportsman practises until he can play quickly, correctly and without thinking. Educators call it “automaticity”.
A child learns to read by sounding out the letters and finding the meaning of the words. With practice, he sturnbles less and less, reading by the phrase. With automaticity, he doesn’t have to think about the meaning of words. So he can give all his attention to the meaning of the text.
It can begin as early as first grade. In a recent study of children in Illinois schools, Alan Rossman of Northwestern University found that automatic readers in the first grade not only read almost three times as fast as the others, but also got better results in exams.
According to Rossman, the key to automaticity is the amount of time a child spends reading, not his IQ. Any child who spends at least 3.5 to 4 hours a week reading books, magazines or newspapers will probably reach automaticity. It can happen if a child turns off TV just one night for reading at home.
You can test yourself by reading something new which is suitable for your level. If you read aloud with expression, with a sense of the meaning of the sentences, you probably are an automatic reader. If you read brokenly, one word at a time, without expression or meaning, you need more practice.

This gympie-gympie tree has stinging hairs all over the whole plant. If you touch(摸)the tree, you will not forget it, because it will bring you pain(疼痛). This pain may stay with you for hours, days or even weeks.
Scientists at the University of Queensland have been working hard on this. They are trying to find out why this plant can bring people so much pain. Now they find some reasons(原因).
After carefully studying different kinds of gympie-gympie trees, the scientists find a group of chemicals(化学物质). They believe these chemicals can make people feel pain. They look like a knot(结). This look makes the chemicals not easy to move, change or go away. That’s why the pain can stay for so long.
The scientists also find another reason for the pain. Nerve cells(神经细胞)have a kind of “gate”. It opens to tell the body about pain and then closes again. But the chemicals can stop the “gate” closing, so it keeps sending the pain message.
Now the scientists are doing more studies. They hope they can come up with new ways to help to stop the pain.

Make a card which is as big as a postcard, and write two English letters L and R on it. Write L on the left and R on the right. First, hold the card about 80 cm (厘米) away and you see both the letters. Then close your right eye and look at the letter R only with your left eye. And now, as you move the card slowly towards you, you’ll find the letter L disappearing. But if you move the card nearer to your face, the letter will be seen again. Now do the same experiment with your left eye closed, you’ll find the letter R disappearing.
Why does the letter disappear? It is because there is a blind spot on the eye. When the image (影像) of the letter falls on the blind spot, it won’t be seen. That is why either of the letters disappears.

Since tea spread from Chinn worldwide, it has become one of the most popular drinks in the world. Different countries have their own tea cultures, like afternoon tea in England.
The tradition of afternoon tea is a very special part of English culture. The custom of drinking tea became popular in England during the 1660s. It was not until the mid-19th century that the idea of “afternoon tea” first appeared.
Afternoon tea is served in the mid-afternoon, between lunch and a late dinner. The idea came from Anna, the seventh Duchess(公爵夫人) of Bedford, in 1840. At the time, many families would eat a late dinner at about 8 p.m., which was one of only two main meals each day, and the other was a mid-morning meal.
With a long time between breakfast and dinner, Anna would become hungry around 4 o’clock in the afternoon. So she asked some tea, bread, butter and cakes to be brought to her room during the late afternoon. This became a habit of hers and she began inviting friends to join her.
Later, Anna continued it, sending cards to her friends asking them to join her for “tea and a walking in the fields”.
Others soon picked up on the idea. By the 1880s, afternoon tea became an event for many ladies. They would be dressed beautifully to be served in the siting room between four and five o’clock, talking about the latest news, their daily life and fashion.
Today’s afternoon tea is simpler than traditional afternoon tea. It is just a biscuit or small cake and a cup of tea. However, there is one thing that has never changed — the meaning of afternoon tea.

You should say “thank you” when someone passes you the salt on the table or opens the door for you, or say you have done your homework well. “Thank you” is used not only between friends but also between parents and children, brothers and sisters, husbands and wives.
“Excuse me” is another useful short expression. When you hear someone say so behind you, you know he or she wants to walk past you without touching you. It’s not polite (礼貌的) to interrupt(打搅) others when they are talking. So if you want to speak to one of them, say “Excuse me” first.
