A warmer winter for “Ice Boy”
A photo showing a boy with icy hair once drew wide attention on social media in 2018. In that photo, a boy’s hair has turned icy white, as well as his eyebrows and eyelashes, and his face is red. The 9-year-old schoolboy, Wang Fuman, was then nicknamed “Ice Boy”. Living with his sister and grandmother, he had to walk nearly 5 kilometers in the snow to attend school. His father worked away from home and his mother had left the family. After the photo was taken and released online by his teacher, the boy’s story touched many people. One web user commented, “Boy, all that you suffer now will light your way in the future!”
Later, as social attention increased, Wang’s life has greatly improved. Having learned about the story of her son, his mother immediately returned to reunite (团聚) with her son. And Wang’s father also received a new job as a construction worker, with much higher pay. The family has moved to a new house, which is also about 10 minute-walk to school.
The local government and charities also offered money to the school for reconstruction. Now, not only can students learn in modern labs, those who live far can also sleep in the newly-built dorm (宿舍楼).
More importantly, beyond Wang and his family, many other ice boys and girls have benefited from China’s poverty alleviation (扶贫) efforts in the past years.

How would you feel if you received a large amount of money all at once?
That’s exactly what happened to Nkosikho Mbele, a worker at a gas station in South Africa. His sudden luck was brought about by an act of kindness he did for a young woman—Monet, a company manager.
One day, Monet stopped at the gas station to refuel(加油). But when Nkosikho was about to serve her, she realized she didn’t have any money or cards on her. She immediately tried to stop him. Knowing about her trouble, Nkosikho decided to pay her gas bill of about RMB100($7) to make sure that she could travel across the highway with enough gas.
“Madam. I’ll pay for you so that you won’t run out of gas on the road. Whenever you are near here again, you can just give me back the money, ” Nkosikho said. As for him, RMB100 was almost all he made in a day. He had to support a big family. He needed the money very much. ㅤThe circle of life was on live display with the help of some children and young turtles (海龟) in the American state of New Jersey.
ㅤLast Sunday, some young children returned 17 young turtles to the wild in the coastal wetlands of a town called Stone Harbor. They set up a program to save the eggs and baby turtles. The program helps 150 to 200 turtles go back into the wild each year.
ㅤThe turtles had been found as eggs and their mothers were killed by cars travelling through the road. People have saved thousands of turtles and returned them to the wild over the past 25 years. The turtles were either raised from eggs or were rescued from roads or other dangerous places over the years.
ㅤ“It is a great community connection,” said Lisa Ferguson who is the director of the program. Local schools and many volunteers join this program. They start the program to save the baby turtles and they also want to show that everyone has a part to play, from adults down to kindergarten students.
ㅤThe turtle release (放生) took place during a busy day of turtle activity. June is egg-laying season and turtles come out onto dry land to lay their eggs. The open area is far more dangerous for the turtles.
ㅤ“We lose 550 turtles each year to road kills.” Ferguson said.
ㅤPeople in this program care for injured turtles. They also collect eggs from those killed on the road. Experts at the organization incubate (孵化) the eggs at 30 degrees Celsius. This ensures they will develop into turtles. They care for the turtles in the first year of their lives. When they have grown enough in the first year, they are set back into the wetlands nearby. Kindergarteners from Stone Harbor schools get to know the turtles from their start in their shells. The young students name the turtles and draw pictures of them. They raise money for turtle care through the sale of tasty treats.
ㅤThen it comes time to set the beloved turtles free to seek their future. Some children quickly and happily picked up the turtles and took them to the water. Every child seemed very pleased as the turtles made their away into the water.
