Greeting people can be confusing(令人困惑的). Will a simple handshake do? Should you give a hug or offer a kiss on the cheek(脸颊)? People in different countries have their own greetings.

During the novel coronavirus epidemic(新冠病毒流行), greeting others is becoming even more confusing. The novel coronavirus has challenged traditional greetings such as shaking hands, kissing and hugging. After all, close physical contact(身体接触)will increase the chance of spreading the virus.
Health departments(部门)in many countries have also suggested that people change their regular greetings to safer ones. Shaking hands is a common gesture to show respect around the world. Now in the US, the elbow bump(碰撞)is the new handshake. In New South Wales(威尔士) and Australia, people pat(拍)each other on the back instead of a handshake.
In France, kissing on cheek is a common greeting, even between people who have just met. French Health Minister (部长)has advised the public not to do this. Italy has made the same suggestion. They said simply looking into a person’s eyes is enough.
In the United Arab Emirates(阿联酋)and Qatar(卡塔尔), people rub(摩擦)their noses together upon meeting. Their health departments have advised them to wave only.
In the face of such changes, how should you do about changing the way you greet people? Australian etiquette(礼仪)expert has suggested simply greeting people by looking them in the eye, smiling and saying hello.

【推荐1】Before you go to another country it is a great help if you know the language and some of the customs of the country.

When people meet each other for the first time in Britain, they say “How do you do?” and shake hands. Usually they do not shake hands when they just meet or say goodbye. But they shake hands after they haven't met for a long time or when they will be away from each other for a long time.

Last year a group of German students went to England for a holiday. Their teacher told them that the English people hardly shake hands. So when they met their English friends at the station, they kept their hands behind their backs. The English students had learned that the Germans shake hands as often as possible, so they put their hands in front and got ready to shake hands with them. It made both of them laugh.

【推荐2】When I was a foreign teacher in China, every day I taught English to my students and they taught me about China. One day the topic mined to saying “I love you”.I was shocked to learn that not one of my students had said this to their mothers, nor had their mothers said it to them.“Does your mom love you?” “Of course,”they answered.
“How do you know?” was my logical question. They responded that their moms cooked and Always told them what they were doing wrong to show their earning.I was strummed. So mom’s cooking and criticizing read our as “I love you”.”Then how do you say ‘I love you to her?” They agreed that getting good grades, followed by good jobs would be how they showed their love.
I come from a culture where most people are expressive enough,so I repeated these queries in clauses over time.Gradually,I began to get different responses. Some of them had exchanged those sentiments with their moms.
One of my favorite stories of change came from a girl. When she came home from university, her mother met her at the door and hugged(拥抱)her. This had never happened before, but her mom said,“Now that you have gone I have more time to myself.I noticed that in some places mothers and children hug each other and I decided it was a good idea and that I would begin hugging you.”
In my family we all say “I love you” a lot. While it is true that we often say the words without having great depth of feelings at that moment,it is almost like a blessing we give each other. Those three little words carry a world of meaning, even when said as a greeting, but most especially if they are the lax words we say to or hear from those we love.
