From red apples and yellow lemons to blueberries and green melons, fruit comes in many different colors. Why do different kinds of fruit have so many colors? Fruit colors actually come from their different pigments (色素), such as red or yellow carotenoid (类胡萝卜素) and blue or purple anthocyanin (花青素). These pigments appear in different numbers, depending on the fruit’s environment. This causes the fruit to turn a certain color.
To find out how environment affects fruit colors, Chinese scientists studied more than 280 different fruit colors, including white, red, blue, purple and black. They found that red fruit tends (倾向) to grow in cooler places. And instead of just growing in one place, you can find them growing in many places around the world. Blue and purple fruit mostly grows in warmer places. These fruits tend to grow a lot in just one special area. The scientists also found that the closer the fruit is to the equator (赤道), the darker its color will be.
Animals have also had an influence on the evolution of fruit colors. Animals eat fruit and drop the seeds (种子) in other places later. This helps the fruit spread and grow in different places. Therefore, in order to attract animals, some fruit develop colors that are easy for animals to see.
However, animals see colors in a different way. Fruit needs to develop colors that are suited to animals’ seeing abilities. For example, birds can see red more easily than humans can. Therefore, there tends to be more red fruit in areas where birds live. The lemurs (狐猴) of Madagascar are red-green color-blind. Many yellow fruit can be found in their living areas, as they can easily see this color.

64% of the students thought the street food was dirty, but 50% of them ate it anyway, the report says. Many students said they ate street food because it was delicious. “School food is terrible and always the same,” said Ling Ming. Many students also thought street food was quick. Another student Wang Jiao said “Street food is quick and you can eat hot food at anytime. At school you can only have food at meal time, and you usually have to wait a long time before it is ready.”

Chinese lunar calendar, also called “Nong Li”, is based on the movements of the moon. The new moon appears on the first day of each month and the full moon comes out in the middle of the month. The cycle lasts for about 30 days—a month.
For Chinese people, the moon not only serves as a useful helper, but is also connected with brightness, expressing the beautiful wishes of the Chinese.
Every year as the Autumn Moon is full, Chinese people get together under the night sky in admiration. It has grown into a tradition ever since the Tang Dynasty. Celebrated on the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month, the Mid-autumn Day is the second most important in China, after the Spring Festival. It’s also an occasion for eating mooncakes and lighting lanterns. After nightfall, the whole family would look up at the full moon, thinking of their nearby relatives or friends, as well as those who are far away from home.
Many people are drawn to the moon’s mystery(神秘)and beauty. So, it’s not surprising that the moon has been one of the most important inspirations(灵感)to Chinese poets. In some of the poems, the moon carries the wishes towards purity(纯洁)and beauty. Others show the longings(渴望)for family and love. A poetic line “The moon viewed at home brighter.” is a best example.

②Paper cutting originated (起源) in China, which is thought to have begun in the 4th century with the invention of paper. But long before that, when paper wasn’t invented, Chinese people already used similar skills to cut on leaves, leather and silk. So it’s really a long art form that has been practiced in China through many centuries.
③The subjects of the paper cuttings can be anything, from historical events and fairy tale characters to plants and animals. The paper cuttings are so lively that they look like real ones. Paper cutting may sound easy, but actually it’s difficult to do well.
④Modern Chinese artists have never stopped trying in different ways. Li Baofeng is a 54-year-old folk artist. “Traditional paper cuttings are often made with red paper, which seems to be a little boring. So I want to make something new,” says Li. She has made works in different colors which have amazing effects.
⑤By combining the techniques of traditional paper cutting with modern computer-designing, artists today can produce 3D paper cuttings. They also use more techniques such as chromatic printing (彩色印刷), woodblock printing (雕版印刷) and air brushing (喷绘) to create livelier works.
⑥Through centuries, Chinese paper cutting has also been introduced into many other countries in Asia and Europe. Now more and more people love paper cutting works and buy them as gifts for their friends.

【推荐3】Many Chinese words include directions or positions. What is the Chinese history and culture hidden behind these words?
When we go shopping, we say “mai dongxi” instead of “mai nanbei” in Chinese. Going back to the ancient city of Chang’an, the national capital in Tang dynasty, there were two large markets, one was in the east and the other was in the west, which were called “eastern market” and “western market”. People went shopping either in the eastern market or the western one. As time went by, people started to describe shopping as “mai dongxi”.
We use “shang cesuo” in Chinese to express “go to the bathroom” and “xia chufang” to mean “go to the kitchen”. Why? In ancient times, houses were built in a certain way. The gate of the house would face south, with the bathroom in the north eastern part of the house and the kitchen in the south eastern part. On maps, north is usually at the top while south is at the bottom. In Chinese, we talk about “the north” as “shang” and “the south” as “xia”. So people would say they were going “up” to the bathroom and “down” to the kitchen.
Ancient Chinese not only used “shang” and “xia” to refer to directions, but also social status. “Shang” was seen to be honorable, while “xia” stood for humility (谦卑). For example, people used “huangshang” to refer to the emperor and “dianxia” to refer to the son or daughter of the emperor, who had a lower status than the emperor.
1. What is the second paragraph mainly talking about?A.How people in the ancient time shopped. |
