Have you ever heard of a famous charity called Operation Smile? We hope we can help you understand how we are trying to help children all over the world.
Operation Smile was started by a doctor and his wife. In 1982, together with some volunteers, they went to Philipines to help children who had holes in their lips or inside their mouths. It was very difficult for them to eat and drink. These volunteers worked very hard. But they worried that they could not carry on with the work because they were short of money. Then they decided to start a charity so that they could help these needy children. They called it Operation Smile.
Operation Smile works in more than twenty developing countries and has cured over 300,000 children who have problems with their mouths. Operation Smile has won many prizes for its work and in 1999 they even started a special event called “The Journey of Hope”. 5,000 children in 18 countries were cured during the event.
On the other hand, Operation Smile trains local doctors and nurses in developing countries so that they can continue to help children when Operation Smile has left. As to the children with much more serious problems, they will send them to the USA for further treatment.
So show your kindness to the needy children now. You can send your donation to Operation Smile at local banks. Many thanks from the children who can smile now will come to you.

“It is a model to solve the problem of left-behind children,” said Liu Wenkui, secretary of the foundation The “substitute mothers” will do parents’ job, finding out what the children need and helping them with problems. Each substitute mother will take care of about 300 to 500 children. There will be a “children’s home” in each village to be the mother’s office and children’s playing space. Their job is to provide quick service and discover the children's problems.
The program hopes to hire women aged 19 to 55 years old from the villages. “We want to hire full-time ‘mothers’ to make sure they won’t think about other work,” Liu said. “We want local women because they understand local languages and cultures.” The program in Sichuan is an experiment, and Liu said, “If it is a successful model, we will start it in the whole country. ”
“If parents are forced to leave home to earn a living and unable to take their children with them we are looking for a transitional(过渡的) way to solve the problem,” he added.

My sister, Diana, who also happens to be my best friend and one of the funniest and kindest people I know, went blind in one eye about 9 years ago. Diana sometimes feels troubled about the way her eye looks now.The pupil (瞳孔) is no longer black; it’s kind of “glows” in photos.
Diana recently bought a special contact lens that makes her eye look like it did before it changed color, but she doesn’t wear this lens often because it becomes quite painful after about an hour.
One night during our holiday, a hotel photographer was taking pictures of the guests as they entered the area set up for dinner.
Diana felt regretful and said if she had known there were going to be pictures taken to record this special moment, she would have worn her contact lens so her eye wouldn’t be so shiny in the picture.
The next day, I was sitting with Diana and her husband Ted. While we were talking, the photographer who had been at the dinner the night before, handed her a photo, leaned in and quietly said, “I matched the color of your eyes in the picture.”
As he walked away, my sister happily said to me and Ted, “Look! He fixed my eye!”
The photographer stopped. He turned around and walked back to our table.
He put his hand on Diana’s shoulder, leaned in again and gently said, “Just to be clear: I didn’t fix your eye. There isn’t anything wrong with your eye. I simply matched the color.”
Her eyes filled up with tears. It was very warm for her heart to hear these beautiful words. It didn’t take much time and made so much difference. It helped her change the way she feels about herself.
I have always loved these words: “The world is full of good people. lf you can’t find one, be one!”
