In Chinese celebrations, whether it is an important birthday or a traditional festival, one of the most typical elements (元素) is the lucky and auspicious (吉祥的) symbols.
To most Chinese, when it comes to lucky symbols, the top three are surely fu, lu and shou, which are sometimes called the three gods.
During Chinese New Year, we would put up red squares with the character fu on them. Some people would put their fu character upside down. In Chinese when we say the fu character is upside down, it sounds like good luck has arrived.
lu often has to do with one’s job and richness. Lu refers to well pay and ranks (等级) in ancient China. Hulu, gourds (葫芦), sounds like hulu (护禄) which means protecting lu. So traditionally, people use gourds to scare away bad spirits and illnesses and keep rich and successful.
Shou means long-lived life. Even nowadays when someone is having their holiday celebration, we would call this person shouxing, a god. At birthday parties for elder people, we often see peaches. That’s because according to the legend (传说), the Queen Mother of the West grows peaches in her own garden, and whoever gets to eat these peaches will live forever.
Besides the three, lucky and auspicious symbols can be easily found in the food we eat. For the Chinese New Year dinner, most families would have fish because the character fish sounds like surplus (有余). In southern China, niangao, a kind of rice cake is a lucky food because niangao sounds like getting higher every year. And for Lantern Festival, we have tangyuan, a kind of sticky rice dumplings. They are round shapes and the pronunciation of the food symbolizes being together.

Recently, Laurence J. Brahm, a documentary filmmaker from the United States, explored this question in Searching for Kung Fu. In the movie, Brahm began a journey of a kung fu pilgrimage(朝圣), traveling to cities in China and the US to search for the origin(起源) and value of kung fu.
Brahm himself is a kung fu lover who has been practicing for more than 40 years. For him, practicing this craft was more than fun.
Around 10 years ago, Brahm was unable to use one of his legs for about two years. But by practicing martial arts (武术) “very, very slowly”, he was able to recover step by step. Now, kung fu has become a daily activity for him.
“Martial arts can help us connect our body, connect our blood flow, and also help connect us into our environment to increase our awareness.” Brahm said.
Still others find other meanings in the practice.
“Chinese kung fu is full of Chinese philosophies(哲学)and core(核心)values,” Hong Kong actor Bruce Leung told Xinhua.
⑧Non-fight is one of these values, which is shown both in the name and the practice. Wu, is made up of two characters—age, meaning “dagger-ax”, and zhi, meaning “to stop”. So, the meaning of kung fu in Chinese is the art of stopping fighting. Kung fu artists always end up with baoquan. This lets each person know that there is nothing hidden and shows trust.
Brahm’s sees Kung fu as “a mirror of Chinese culture”.
The traditional values of kung fu, actually, are in the minds of all Chinese people. Why does China want to be in harmony with other nations? “Its part of the psychology(心理) of the Chinese people. It’s also national psychology.” Brahm told Xinhua.
Bralm also believes that today’s world needs to restart equal exchanges between countries, and that culture and sports, such as kung fu, can serve as a great channel and bridge.

It is said that Chinese tea was discovered by King Shen Nong. People say that he lived 5,000 years ago. One summer day, while he was visiting a faraway part of his country, he felt very thirsty. The servants began to make water hot enough to turn into gas for him to drink. Dried leaves from a near plant fell into the water. The king drank some, and found it could make him feel less tired. Also as a scientist, Shen Nong was interested in the new drink. And so, tea was created in 2737 BC.
Drinking tea has many advantages. It makes people feel less tired, clears heat inside the human body and helps people lose weight. As you add a cup of tea to your daily life, please check the following helpful advice.

Do not drink too much strong tea. It will probably be harmful to your stomach and make you feel sick if you make the tea too strong.

Shopping for clothes is not the same experience for a man as it is for a woman. A man goes shopping because he needs something. All men simply walk into a shop and ask for what they want. If the shop has it, the salesman quickly finds it, and the business of trying it on continues at once. All being well, the deal can be and often is completed in less than five minutes.
For a man, small problems may begin when the shop does not have what he wants. Then, the salesman tries to sell the customer something else. “I know this jacket is not the style(款式)you want, sir, but would you like to try it for size? It happens to be the color you mentioned.” Few men have patience with this treatment, and the usual reply is, “This is the right color and maybe the right size, but it should be wasting my time and yours by trying it on.”
However, a woman does so in the opposite way. Her shopping is not often based on (以……为基础) need, and she is only “having a look around”. She is always open to persuasion,__really she believes in what the saleswoman tells her. She will try on any number of things. Most women have an excellent sense of value when they buy clothes. They are always on the lookout for the unexpected sale. Faced with a roomful of dresses, a woman may easily spend an hour going from one room to another, often going back over again, before choosing the dresses she wants to try on. It is always tiring, but obviously (明显的) enjoyable. Most dress shops provide chairs for the waiting husbands.

①Tracking (跟踪) apps are becoming more and more popular. A study in 2019 showed that 40% of parents in the UK were using tracking apps every day. A 2020 study found that 33% of parents in the US use tools to keep watch on their children. With tracking apps, parents feel closed to their children even when they’re not at home. Although many parents want to know where their child is, some people think that tracking is bad for children. What do you think? Should parents track their children?
②Tracking apps mean that parents know where their children are. They can also set alerts(警报) for themselves, so they know when their children leave a place or are on their way home. This makes parents feel safe and relaxed. Instead of being worried while their children are out, parents can relax because they’ll get alerts if their children are running late. Tracking apps also give young people a taste of independence, especially if their parents would not let them move around so freely.
③Tracking apps take away a big part of childhood. You will feel free when you go out without a parent. If young people know their parents are “watching” them, they won’t have that same excitement and feeling of freedom. Children may also feel that they can’t go anywhere without their parents following them. Young people may also become worried. Because this is only the beginning of parents watch their life. Parents may also become dependent on tracking apps and not learn to believe in their children. Children need to have true freedom so that they can live better.
④It’s true that tracking apps are good for parents, but most children still dislike them. Whether parents track their children or not is still a big question in the future.
1. What can we learn from paragraph 1?A.More parents are using tracking apps now. |
B.The use of tracking apps is getting less popular. |
C.Parents feel unsafe if they use tracking apps. |
D.Most parents think that tracking is bad for children. |
A.Children will get alerts for themselves. |
B.Parents know if their children are independent. |
C.Children like using some tracking apps. |
D.Parents know where their children are going. |
A.excited | B.independent | C.unhappy | D.free |

Jackson Mann is 15 years old. He is the starter of the card game called “SOS: Save Our Species (物种)”. He hopes that people can do something for endangered (濒危的) species after playing the game.
In the game, players need to collect endangered species and match (匹配) them with their right habitats (栖息地). The more endangered the species are, the more points (得分) players can get. The game finishes when there are no more cards. And the player with the most points wins the game.
Jackson had the idea for the game on a family trip to Central America three years ago. “We saw lots of wildlife and played lots of card games,” said Jackson. “I thought that it would be great if people could play cards and learn about endangered species at the same time.”
