Courage is often thought to be one of the important spirits everyone needs. Then what is courage?     1     One isn’t necessarily born with courage, but one is born with potential(潜力). Kids build courage as they are growing up.

Many people talk about connections between courage and fear.     2     If there is no fear, there is no need for courage. That is to say, courage is the ability to do what makes you feel afraid. Courage doesn’t only mean great actions such as saving one’s life or taking a big risk.     3     For example, we show courage when we raise our hand to answer a hard question during class or try a new sport.

Courage is in everyday choices we make. Can you be kind to the new kid in your class?     4     Or can you stand up for someone in need? Often, these things don’t come with praise, but they need courage.

5     When we become brave enough to face failure, we’ll be more willing to try new things and try again after we fail. Courage doesn’t always shout. Sometimes courage is the little voice at the end of the day that says, “I’ll try again tomorrow.”

A.Courage also means the smaller actions of our everyday lives.
B.Learning to fail is another important part of courage.
C.Courage always stands side by side with fear.
D.It is the ability to do something difficult.
E.Can you listen to the new person in your group?

Reading is fun! But that’s not all.     1     One way you can do this with fiction books, passages, or poems is by getting their themes.     2     The writer may express his or her thoughts with a theme.Themes can be ideas like friendship, bravery, love, honesty or family. Make sure you know what the writer is saying,

Sometimes, themes are hard to find out. First, the theme may not be able to be included in just one word like the examples above. In some articles, there may be more than one theme in them.     3     You have to use the clues (线索) in the articles to find them.

To get the theme, first you need to make sure you’ve read the whole article.     4

Then, ask yourself to sum up (概括) the article and try to make up a “big idea” of the article.     5     You needn’t repeat every detail of the story—a few key examples will be fine.

Now you are ready to explore the theme of a text!

A.What’s more, some themes are not shown in the words directly.
B.You have to read the article again and again.
C.Since themes develop over time, you can’t get them easily until the end of the article.
D.Finally, after finding out a “big idea”, go through the article to find examples that support this idea.
E.You can also analyze (分析) articles to learn more from them.
F.A theme is a central idea running throughout the article.
G.What does the writer want to tell us?

【推荐3】Real Friend,Real Meaning
We can make mistakes at any age. Some mistakes we make are about money. But most mistakes are about people. “Did Jerry really care when I broke up with Helen?” “When I got that great job, did Jim really feel good about it, as a friend? Or did he envy my luck?” When we look back, doubts like these can make us feel bad. But when we look back, it’s too late.
Why do we go wrong about our friends or our enemies? Sometimes what people say hides their real meaning. And if we don’t really listen, we will miss the meaning behind the words. Suppose someone tells you, “You’re a lucky dog.” and that’s friendly. But a “lucky dog”? There’s a bit of envy (嫉妒) in those words. Maybe he doesn’t see____ himself. But bringing in the “dog” bit puts you down a little. What he may be saying is that he doesn’t think you observe your luck.
Just think of all the things you have to be “thankful for” is another noise that says one thing and means another. It could mean that the speaker is trying to get you to see your problem as part of your life as a whole. But is he? Wrapped up in this phrase is the thought that your problem isn’t important. It’s telling you to think of all the starving people in the world when you haven’t got a date for Saturday night.
How can you tell the real meaning behind someone’s words? One way is to take a good look at the person talking. Do his words fit the way he looks? Does what he says agree with the tone of voice? His posture (姿态)? The look in his eyes? Stop and think. The minute you spend thinking about the real meaning of what people say to you may save another mistake.
1. What mistakes often make us feel bad except money according to the writer?

B.Mistakes about housework.
C.Mistakes about work.
D.Mistakes about our families.
2. The underlined word "it" in the second paragraph refers to ______.
A.being friendlyB.a bit of envy
C.lucky dogD.your luck
3. We can know the real meaning of our friends’ words by ______ while listening.
A.asking them to say slowly
B.looking in their eyes
C.repeating their words
D.writing down their words
4. What does the writer want to tell us in the passage?
A.We often make mistakes when we talk with others.
B.We should think carefully before talking.
C.What to do when we are talking with others.
D.Try to avoid mistakes while communicating with people.
