What is Machu Picchu? Well, it is the remains of an ancient Inca city. It is on the top of a mountain that overlooks the Urubamba River. It is more than 7,000 feet above sea level!
How did we get up that high? We could have hiked the Inca Trail (印加古道) for four days. Instead we decide to take the train. It runs right along the river. It takes only a few hours. Our guide was a man from the local area. Not only did he provide information about the area, but he worked as our interpreter. Some of the people of Peru speak Quechua, which of course we didn’t understand.
As we took the train, our guide pointed out unknown plants that grew in the rain forest. The plants which grew near the floor of the rain forest, were so thick that I could hardly imagine trying to get through it back in 1911. That was when Hiram Bingham, started his expedition (探险). We also learned about the animals. There are some dangerous snakes that live there. One bite can kill a person.
His trip was well worth it, in my opinion. Machu Picchu was so big and beautiful! There were terraces (梯田) cut into the sides of the mountain, and green was everywhere. We saw where the people lived and where they farmed. The trip is great!
