During the meal, the world leaders enjoyed dishes like salads and burgers made with thrown-away vegetables and fruits. Chef Dan Barber, who helped create the meal, hoped that the experience would make the leaders pay more attention to the problem of food waste.
It is reported that one out of nine people on Earth does not get enough food. Yet every year over one third of the food produced worldwide goes to waste! Why is so much food wasted? Firstly, food is often thrown away before it goes to the market because too much of it is produced, or because it is not kept properly on farms. Secondly, shops and supermarkets usually throw away unsold food. Finally, customers often buy more food than they need, so a lot of uneaten food is wasted.
How can you waste less food? When eating out, you may ask for less food and take home what is left. Visit fast food restaurants less often, since they are usually more wasteful. Encourage your favorite restaurants to give unsold food to food banks. You can also waste less food at home. Use smaller rice bowls so that you eat less rice. Encourage family members to use unfinished rice to make rice puddings. Tell family members to make a shopping list and buy only what is on the list when shopping for food.
Food waste is a growing problem and we, either farmers or food sellers or customers, must take this problem more seriously and do what we can to help.

The next day I met with him and other three nice people at Hodo Soy Beanery in Oakland(奥克兰). I enjoyed the tour. I got a lot from the trip. The following is what I learnt.
Tofu has a history of 2, 000 years. Although the word “tofu” is from Japanese, the food maybe comes from China. There are two main kinds of tofu: soft tofu and firm tofu. In some parts of Asia, people use tofu as a kind of meat.
Douhua is one kind of soft tofu. It is a popular breakfast food in China. Because it is very soft, people can’t eat it with chopsticks, but with a teaspoon. People often eat it as a dessert(甜品) and often add spring onions and sauce (酱) to it. In Malaysia, people usually eat douhua with white or dark sugar water.

In the study, scientists watched the brain activity of college students who wrote by hand or typed words. Compared with when they typed, more of the students’ brain areas worked together when students wrote with a pen. The same also showed up in brainwaves that have been connected with forming memories.
Before this study, research had shown that handwriting improves spelling and the ability to remember what you’ve learned. Handwriting also helps the understanding of ideas. Scientists think that the slow process of writing down words gives people more time to understand material and learn it.
This new study may explain why handwriting seems so good for memory. There is a basic difference in brain organization for handwriting, compared with typing.
The team did not test whether the students had remembered the words they wrote or typed. So it’s not yet clear how the increased brain activity influences learning. More study is needed on the differences in brain connections and whether they have a direct relationship with how well people learn.
So to write or type? Handwriting may improve learning. But typing is often easier, faster and more practical. So students should decide based on the task, the scientists said. For example, using handwriting to take notes might help you hang on to information, while typing an article could help you get ideas down to the page faster before you forget them.
Though more work is needed to find the best way for learning, handwriting has shown its value. So it shouldn’t be left behind in the digital age.“Schools need to bring in more writing into learning,” the scientists said. They agree that handwriting should stick around: “Writing is so good for brains.” Even more, without it, young people would lose part of the experience of being human, they added. “It’s important for them to be able to at least write a shopping list or a love letter. We really think that is important for us.”

The cells (细胞) that plants are made up of are different. In other words, the cell wall of plants has something special.
First of all, it’s important to find that not all plant cells have a cell wall. Besides, there are many differences of a cell wall based on the kinds of plant. The following is meant to be what a plant cell wall is like.
The cell wall of a plant is on the our side of the cell membrane (膜). It is usually hard and cannot be bent easily, but the degree of flexibility (韧性) of the cell wall is different. It is based on the special use that the cell has in keeping the plant alive. Cells that make up the trunk of a tree are clearly less flexible than cells on a leaf.
Cell walls act in many ways. They serve to protect the plant. They provide support, as well as help in the movement of chemicals and wastes into and out of the cell. More importantly, they control the water that goes in and out. Plants must have good water controlling systems (系统), allowing them to keep water during dry seasons, and get rid of unnecessary water. Plants can’t walk around to find water, so being able to control water is very important.
So there you have it — what a plant cell wall is. Of course, there are many other things that are not talked about here. Knowing more about plant cell walls requires further study and research.

Dinner parties usually start between seven p.m. and eight p.m. And end at about eleven p.m. Ask your hosts what time you should arrive. It’s polite to bring flowers, a bar of chocolate or a bottle of wine as gifts.
Usually the evening starts with drinks and snacks. If you want to be very polite, say how much you like the room or the pictures on the wall. But remember: it’s not polite to ask how much things cost.
In many families, the husband sits at one end of the table and the wife sits at the other end. They eat with their guests. You can start a meal with soup or something small, and then you have meat or fish with vegetables, coffee and then dessert. It's polite to finish everything on your plate and have more if you want it.

Paper is very good for keeping you warm. You have perhaps seen homeless men asleep on a large number of newspapers. In Finland(芬兰), it is sometimes -40℃ in winter. The farmers wear paper boots(靴子) in the snow. Nothing could be warmer.
Each year, more and more things are made of paper. We have had paper cups and plates for a long time. But now we hear that chairs, tables, and even beds can be made of paper. You can wear paper hats, paper dresses, and paper raincoats. When you have used them once, you may throw them away and buy new ones.
The latest use of paper seems to be paper houses. These are not small houses for children to play in, but real, big houses for people to live in. You can buy a house with three rooms for about 500 dollars. It’s cheap. You can put it up by yourself in a few hours, and you can use it for about five years.

Since the beginning of history, people have used rivers for transportation (交通). The longest one in the United States is the Mississippi. The lifeline of Egypt is Nile. To the people of India, the Ganges is great, but it is also important for transportation; ships can travel along it for a thousand miles. Other great rivers are the Congo in Africa and the Mekong in southeast Asia. The greatest of all for navigation (航海), however, is the Amazon in Brazil. It is so wide and so deep that large ships can go about two thousand miles upon it.
Besides transportation, rivers give food, water to drink, water for crops, and chances for fun and recreation for the people who live along their bands. In order to increase the supply of water for crops, engineers sometimes build a dam (大坝) across a river and let a lake form behind the dam. Then people can use the water not only to irrigate (灌溉) their fields but also to make electricity for their homes and industries. However, large cities and industries that are located upon rivers often cause problems. As the cities grow in size and industries increase in number, the water in the rivers become polluted with chemicals and other materials. People are learning the importance, however, of doing more to keep their rivers clean if they want to enjoy the benefits (利益) of this natural resource.

Zhai Zhigang, Wang Yaping and Ye Guangfu who are working aboard the Tiangong space station, showed our students a glimpse of their life there. They also did some fun science experiments. Let’s take a look at some of them.
Use it or lose it
The human body grows with the pull of Earth’s gravity(重力). But in space, our bones and muscles(肌肉) don’t need to support our body’s weight. This will cause bone and muscle loss. It’s reported that astronauts can lose up to 20% of their muscles after just a couple of weeks. That is dangerous for astronauts because they will be too weak to work.
Astronauts have different ways to prevent this. During the lecture, Zhai introduced a special uniform Ye was wearing. It’s called a “penguin suit”. There are many elastic bands(弹力带) inside the suit. Wearing it, astronauts use their muscles to stretch(拉伸) the bands. This keeps their muscles strong. Wang also showed students how she walked on a treadmill(跑步机) and rode a bicycle. Astronauts exercise with these tools every day to prevent muscle loss.
Space water is different
Water in space acts differently from water on Earth in other ways. For example, water will not flow(流动) downward if you try to pour it into a cup. That’s why astronauts usually drink water through straws(吸管) in sealed(密封的)bags. If astronauts cry, the tears will stay on their eyeballs instead of falling down. They have to wipe(擦拭) them away!
During another experiment, Wang made a water film(膜). Then she added more water drops onto the film to make it a water ball. This can never happen on Earth.
