Bob and his wife lived in a peaceful town happily. They usually went to the same barber shop to get their hair cut. The barber was a humorous man and liked to tell jokes. And he liked to ask others to guess his riddles. Many of his customers loved him and his riddles. But he had never asked Bob before.
One day, when Bob was in the barber shop, the barber decided to ask him to guess a riddle,“This is a person who is my parents’ child. But this person is not my brother , and is not my sister, either. Who is this person?” Bob thought for a long time and finally gave up. The barber laughed and said, “This is me!”
Bob liked this riddle very much. When he returned home, he asked his wife to guess the same riddle, “This is a person who is my parents’ child. But this person is not my brother, and is not my sister, either. Who is this person?” His wife could not guess it. Bob laughed and was almost out of breath. He said, “Don’t you know him? Two years passed. One summer the St Clare family went to their house on Lake Pontchartrain, with all the slaves.
One day Eva and Tom were sitting in the garden reading the Bible and talking about Heaven, angels and spirits.
“Tom,” said Eva, “sing the song I like, the one about bright spirits.”
Tom sang a song about angels and Heaven.
“Uncle Tom, sometimes I see those spirits,” said Eva. “They come to me in my sleep. I’m going there.”
“Where Miss Eva?”
Eva pointed her finger to the sky and said, “There. To the bright spirits. I’m going there soon.”
Tom’s heart almost stopped. He looked at Eva. She didn’t look well: she was often tired, her breath was short, she had a cough, and she was getting very thin.
Miss Ophelia noticed this too, and she tried to tell St Clare, but he didn’t want to hear it.
“Stop that!” he said. “Don’t you see that the child is only growing up? It’s what happens when children grow fast.”
“But she has that cough!”
“That’s nothing, She has a little cold,” he said, but he became worried and watched his daughter every day.
Eva’s health became rapidly worse. She became very weak and she couldn’t leave the house. Maris. was too busy thinking about her own headaches and she didn’t notice anything, but St Clare called a doctor.

Homestays are becoming more and more popular, and people around the world are offering their homes as hotels. Homestays offer cheap places to stay, and the chance for guests to see the area like a local. They are very popular with people who want to stay in another country to study or on holiday. We asked three families who run homestays to tell us about where they live.
The Atal family
Our family home is in a small village in the east of Pakistan, in the Himalayan mountains. The village is quite small and very quiet. The mountains are extremely beautiful. You can go for a long walk and swim in the rivers but there are no shops, cinemas or cafes.
Kate and Julian Foxton
Our two-bed house is by the sea in the south-west of England. It is about five minutes’ drive to the nearest village of Portreath. There are lots of beaches, rivers and forests and it is very quiet. We spend a lot of time reading books, watching films and going for walks. Our area is great for sports, such as surfing, kayaking and mountain biking. However, the houses here are expensive, which can be a problem for local people. There are no buses or trains here, so it can be difficult to get around without a car.
Chafic and Aline Halwany
Our home is near the centre of Beirut, Lebanon, one of the largest cities in the Middle East. There are lots of cafes and restaurants, which open late at night. We love it here because it’s so friendly and you can always find the things you need—lots of people come to stay to learn Arabic and French. However, it can be noisy at night, and there is quite a lot of traffic during the day.

Researchers found a house and some tools on the island. They believed that these were Alexander Selkirk’s. They also found some holes. It was certain that Selkirk watched coming ships or looked out for dangerous animals with those holes.
It is said that Selkirk came to stay on the island after he argued with his captain. He decided to stay there to repair an old ship. He didn’t know that he would stay there for nearly five years before a visiting English ship picked him up and took him back home.
His story was written down in 1709. He told people that he had to kill goats with his gun. He ate the meat and used the skin for clothes.
We are not sure whether Daniel Defoe had ever met Selkirk. Yet, it is certain that he had heard of the story of Selkirk’s adventures before he wrote the novel.
1. When did people across the world start to love the story of Robinson?2. What did Selkirk use the holes to do?
3. How did Selkirk go back home?
4. Was the story of Robinson written by Daniel Defoe or Alexander Selkirk?

Some other boys also sell flowers in front of the park. But no one is like this boy. He asks everyone to buy his flowers. When he sees me, he always follows me and says, “Please buy a flower. Please.” I don’t like that, and I never buy any flowers from him.
Today, I go to the park again. The boy is there. He sits in the same place. I don’t want him to follow me, so I don’t look at him. I walk past him into the park.
When I come out of the park, the boy is still there. He doesn’t ask anyone to buy his flowers. He just sits there. I want to know why.
I walk to the boy. He looks at me but doesn’t say anything.
I ask him,” Boy, why don’t you ask people to buy your flowers today?”
He answers, “Because my sister is dead. I don’t need much money now. You can take a flower for free.”
I buy all his flowers, but I feel so sorry.

A boy got bad grades in the exam and he was upset. He went to the park and sat under a tree. Then he heard a sound from the tree. He looked up and found a squirrel(松鼠)in the tree.
The squirrel was jumping from one tree to another. Minutes later, it tried to jump to a higher branch(树枝). But the branch was so high that it seemed impossible to make it. The squirrel truly missed. But it still landed safely(安全降落) on a lower branch. After several tries, it finally reached the higher branch.
An old man sitting near the boy said, “I saw a lot of squirrels jump like that. I guess they keep jumping because they don’t want to spend their whole life in one tree. ”The boy thought, “If a little squirrel can be successful, why can’t I make it?” Then the boy went back and make up his mind to get the first place in the exam. He worked hard and his grades improved little by little.
Though we can’t be successful sometimes, as long as we work hard, we will end up better than before. Life is short and time goes by so fast, so why not try our best?
