The Arctic is home to over 21,000 kinds of animals and plants. Two thirds of it is the Arctic Ocean. In winter, it is completely covered with sea ice. In summer; nearly 50 percent of the sea is ice.

It’s also home to about 4 million people, a group of whom are Inuit. Jim is an Inuit boy. At 6:30 am, he wakes up and gets ready to go to school in his fur (毛皮)coat. It keeps him warm in the freezing weather. Half an hour later, he gets to school on a ski or snowmobile. Some of his friends go by car instead. At 11:30 am, it’s time for lunch. There’s fish and other meat in his lunchbox. He sometimes eats them uncooked. These foods give him enough energy. Besides local food, some people eat Western food. At 5:00 pm, the snow outside makes everything bright, so he wears snow goggles on his way back home, or his eyes may be hurt badly by the strong light. From December to March, the sun never rises. However, it always shines in the sky during the summer. At 10:00 pm, he goes to bed. Sometimes he stays in an ice house called igloo. It looks cold but it’s warm inside. Many local people live in houses made of wood.
The Inuit mainly make a living by hunting and fishing. Now, their life is greatly influenced by climate (气候) change. For example, many animals they hunt for food are disappearing. There is less food for the reindeer they keep, too. They face more terrible weather, such as snowstorms. Hunting becomes more dangerous. Hunters may accidentally fall into water if the ice becomes too thin. Actually, the temperature in the Arctic is 18℃ higher than it was 125 years ago. All Arctic ice may disappear during the summer in less than 100 years.

After spending hours cooking and preparing the table setting for your guests, you hope that everyone has a lovely time and enjoys the food. But it’s not all about the skills of the cook—the dinnerware (餐具) also matters. The colour of dinnerware has a big influence on how your food tastes. Here’s how to use colour psychology at your next dinner party.
Colours for picky eaters (挑食者)
Researchers at the University of Portsmouth found in a 2022 study that the color of the bowl changed the perception (感知) of food for some people. Picky eaters think that food in red and blue bowls tastes saltier than food in white bowls. They are also less likely to try new food if it is served in a red bowl.
So, if you have picky guests or if you want to offer new dishes, consider the color of the dinnerware first to keep everyone attracted.
Introducing new food to children
If your guests are children, the rules may have a little change. A lot of dishes—red, yellow, blue and green—are preferred by children under the age of ten, with yellow being the least preferred by all, according to a 2018 study. For children over the age of 10. when tastes are changing, they are more likely to choose white dishes, behaving more like adults, says the research.
Knowing this can help get your family to try new food or make your children’s gatherings a success.

Do you drink milk every day? We all know that milk is good for our health. But is that the whole? Let’s take a closer look!
Milk might be one of the best things we can drink. It has a lot of nutrients (营养物质) to help children grow. It’s rich in calcium (钙) and vitamins (维他命). Calcium gives us strong bones (骨骼). Doctors say that milk is also good for our teeth and heart. And a glass of warm milk helps us get a good night’s sleep. Milk is great!
However, some studies show that milk may cause some health problems. For example, drinking a lot of milk (three or more times a day) may make children obese (肥胖的), Live Science reported. Also, milk might not actually make our bones stronger. Scientists found that some people who drank more milk also had more broken bones.
So should we still drink milk? Milk may not be a super food. But it does give us a lot of nutrients. Drink milk if you like it, but not because you think it is the best thing for your health.

ZouYi, an environmentalist ho lives in Beijing, has been filming the air quality near his home using his mobile phone since 2013. For almost ten years till now, he has taken more than two million photos to record (记录) Beijing’s major environmental changes. The main purpose of taking these photos is to truly record the changes of Beijing’s air quality every day.
After two months, Zou Yi put together 64 photos he took and posted them online. His move got a hot discussion.
The fact that China is the first major developing country to deal with PM2.5 may sound unfamiliar (不熟悉) to many, but most people have probably heard about the country’s action plan for preventing and controlling air pollution, or its critical battle against pollution. China has also made a firm decision in carbon reduction (碳减少) and afforestation (植树造林). As a result. clear skies and fresh air are returning to major cities.
Air quality has greatly improved. Days with good air quality thought for 87.5 percent of 2021, up 6.3 percentage points from 2015 and making China the country with the greatest air-quality improvement worldwide, according to Minister of Ecology and Environment Huang Ruoqiu.

Our world is in danger. We must do something to protect the environment. What are the main problems we face?
The greenhouse effect
When we burn fuels such as petrol and coal, a gas called CO2 is produced. Too much of this gas pollutes atmosphere, and causes it to keep in too much heat. As a result of the greenhouse effect, the earth’s temperature is increasing. This causes sea level to go up, and in the future may cause cities to disappear.
Cutting down forests
Every year, we destroy nature by cutting down huge areas of forests. This makes the greenhouse effect worse because trees take in CO2 and give out O2. Cutting down trees also destroys the homes of the animals that live in our forests, and causes the surface of the soil to be easily destroyed by rain. This can result in floods and even more damage to the environment.
Bad habits
Many of our habits cause pollution. People often use things once and then throw them away, or leave them on the ground as liter. This creates tons of rubbish and pollutes our land and seas.
In order to protect the environment, we need to take proper action. Chinese government has made laws and rules about dealing with the waste. We are getting serious about our bad habits now. We should only buy and use products friendly to the environment. We should also recycle as many things as possible. To reduce air pollution, we can take the bus or subway instead of driving.
If we just learn to live in new and different ways, we can make a difference.

When Cash Daniels was given “The Conservation Kid” for his efforts to protect the environment in 2021, he was only 12 years old. He got interested in environmental problems a few years ago, when he found plastic on a beach. It got him thinking about the influence that plastic pollution has on the environment, especially on rivers and oceans.
In his research, Cash found that rivers are at the heart of the problem. According to a 2021 report from Science Advances, far more rivers than thought—at least 1, 000 of them—are carrying large number of plastic into our oceans. This hit close to home for Cash. He lives in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The city sits on the Tennessee River, one of the most polluted in the world.
This information motivated(激发)Cash to take action. He made it his mission to clear litter from public spaces and local waterways.
At first, he and his parents worked together to pick up litter near the Tennessee River. But Cash soon realized that he would need more help.
So he organized community cleanup outings. Finally, he and other volunteers removed more than 11, 000 pounds of litter from the river.
Cash has also teamed up with businesses to recycle aluminum cans (铝罐). So far, he has recycled more than 2, 000 pounds of them. The money he earns from that supports river protection efforts.
Cash enjoys getting people, especially other kids, involved in environmental activism. He wrote a children’s book called One Small Piece, which he has read to students in his community. In it, he spent much time explaining the problem of pollution and how streams, rivers, and oceans are interconnected.
In January 2022, together with his friend Ella Grace, he founded Cleanup Kids. So far, The Cleanup Kids has had more than 50 members across the US, Canada, and Australia. The group encourages children to pick up and recycle litter, as well as to raise awareness(意识) among young people to understand how much human life depends on the nature. The goal for the young volunteers is to collect 1 million pieces of litter by the end of 2022. “Kids may be a small percentage of the population,” Cash says. “But they are 100% of the future.”
1. How old was Cash Daniels when he was given “The Conservation Kid”?2. What did he find in his research?
3. What did he make as his mission?
4. Among Cash’s actions on environmental protection, which one touches you most? Why?

【推荐1】Have you ever taken PE classes with face masks(口罩), running, jumping, throwing? If so, that can be dangerous and risky.
When doing exercise or sports, breathing is faster and harder than at rest. It increases(增加) the risk of passing the disease on. As a result, people are considering having masks on, others may follow suit(跟着做), especially during the outbreak of COVID-19.
We know that exercise leads to faster and harder breaths, a mask makes it harder to take in enough air when you perform at the highest levels. At low to moderate-intensity(中低) exercise, effort will feel a bit harder than normal with a mask, but you still walk comfortably. The challenge appears to be more during heavy exercise, like rugby or football, taking in air at rates(率) of about 40-100 litres per minute.
When we do heavy exercise, our muscles(肌肉) produce lactic acid(乳酸), which causes the sense of burning. It is then turned into CO2 and stored. But what happens if the CO2 is stopped by the mask? As you move from moderate to heavy exercise, you may be re-breathing CO2. It can be bad for your health. There may also be less oxygen in the recycled air. It could be like exercising at highland. So it is important to understand the limits(限度) of heavy exercise with masks.
