We are often told to pay attention to what our mothers tell us. Scientists have found that our brains greatly prefer the voices of our own mothers.

Scientists at Stanford University recently studied this. They scanned (扫描) children’s brains while they were listening to different sounds, including their mothers’ voices. They found that 97 percent of the time, children could recognize (识别) their mothers’ voices at once.

Hearing their mothers’ voices makes children’s brains more active. We usually just use one part of our brains to deal with sounds when we hear something. But when we hear our mothers’ voices, many parts of the brain start to work as well.

Why do we reply so strongly to our mothers’ voices? On one hand, when we are still in the womb (子宫) before we’re born, we hear our mothers talking. This makes us feel comfortable. On the other hand, mothers teach us talk and social skills by repeating words again and again. This way, when mother’s sound is heard again, more attention is paid to it.

Some sounds are necessary for our life and they bring us pleasure. But mothers’ voices are different and they make us feel comfortable. We will feel very relaxed when we hear our own mothers’ voices.

【推荐1】Much meaning can be carried clearly with our eyes, so it is often said that eyes can speak. Do you have such kind of experience? In a bus you may look at a stranger, but not too long. And if he finds that he is being looked at, he may feel uncomfortable. It’s the same in daily life. If you are looked at for more than necessary, you will look at yourself up and down, to see if there is something wrong with you. If nothing goes wrong, you will feel angry toward the person who is looking at you that way. Eyes do speak, right?
Looking too long at someone may seem to be impolite. But sometimes things are different. If a man looks at a woman for more than 10 seconds, it may mean that he wishes to attract her attention, to make her understand that he loves her. When two people are in a conversation, the speaker will only look at the listener from time to time, in order to make sure that the listener does pay attention to what he or she is saying. Lovers will enjoy looking at each other or being looked at for a long time, to show something that words cannot express.
Clearly, eye contact(接触)should be done according to the relationship between two people and the place where you stay.

【推荐2】If you go to the UK, you’re sure to see some small red “boxes” on the streets. They are postboxes. They are an important part of Britain.

King Charles I started the British Royal Mail service in 1635. Then in 1840, Royal Mail brought out the first stamp, the Penny Black. But people still had to go to the post office to send a letter or wait for a bellman to collect it.

Anthony Trollope, who worked in a British post office, had an idea. While traveling for work in Europe, he saw roadside postboxes in France and Belgium. He thought similar boxes would be good in Britain. In 1852, the first postboxes were made, but they were only used on the Channel Islands.

The next year, postboxes started to appear all over Britain. At first, they were green and of different shapes and sizes. But there were problems. People couldn’t always see them and even walked into them. So in 1874, Royal Mail made them all red. By 1879, the postboxes all became the way they look now—red, tall, and with a round hat-like shape at the top to keep out the rain.

Over the years, the General Post Office has kept making the boxes. Every box has the royal cypher (徽章) on it. It shows who the king or queen was when the box was made.

文章大意:本文主要讲述的是包装食品的原因及产生的问题。

【推荐3】Over the years, the way we carry food has changed. In the past, some food products like salt, sugar or flour were usually sold “loose (散的)” and taken home in bags. Thanks to modern technology, today a large number of packaged (包装好的) food products are seen in the market.

Food is packaged for different reasons. For example, canned products can be kept well, and the packaging can also help to improve the food safety. Other packaging is used so that some food can be easily carried, transported and sold. For fragile (易碎的) foods—such as fruit, tomatoes and cakes—they need to be packaged for the perfect condition when they reach the consumers (消费者).

Packaging may also cause several problems. First, packaging uses a lot of world’s resources (资源). Hundreds of thousands of trees are cut down to provide paper and cardboard. And every year, millions of dollars are spent on packaging by food companies to catch the eye of consumers. As a result, people are likely to buy more food than they actually need. What can we do? Maybe we can ask companies to use recyclable materials for packaging. We hope to find better ways in the future.
