Everyone needs friends. There is an old saying, “Friends are God’s(上帝的) way of taking care of us.” But how do you find a real friendship(友谊) and keep it?
The American writer Sally Seamans tells young students some smart ways to find friends. Sally says finding a friendship is just like planting a tree. You plant the seed(种子) and take care of it to make it grow.
First, you should choose a friend. What makes a good friend? It is not because a person has money or good looks. A good friend should be kind and patient. If you have a bad day, a good friend should listen to your complaints and do his or her best to help you. To make a friend, you cannot be too shy. You should make each other happy and share your life.
But things cannot always be happy. Even the best friends have fights. What should you do when you have a fight with your friend? You have to talk to him or her. When there is no one around, have an honest talk. If he or she doesn’t want to talk, you could write a letter.
There are three steps to be friends again: Tell him or her how you are feeling, say what your friend did wrong, and explain(解释) why you did this or that.
Remember that friendship is one of the most important things in your life.

Note-taking is a skill that can help you do well in all your schoolwork. It can make you confident (自信的) when you are studying. It can also help you and your classmates correct some mistakes. If your teacher writes notes on the blackboard, that’s great. You can copy them or write down the most important facts of all in class. Different teachers do things differently. For example, some teachers may focus on lots of dates and facts in class, but they only write the important ones on the blackboard. Other teachers may not write anything down, but they may repeat (重复) them.
Don’t try to write down every word in class, or you might miss some important points. Some students really learn better with the help of these notes. Don’t be afraid to ask your teacher to repeat what you miss. If your teacher speaks too fast and you can’t follow what he is saying, you can ask him after class.
Comparing your notes with your classmates’ can be good for your learning. It can also help you and your classmates correct some mistakes.
Note-taking also needs organization. Keep notes for each subject in one place, so that you can find everything easily when a test comes.

We often dine out with others, but do you know some basic etiquette(礼节)? If you behave well at the table, it will make your partners happy. But if you don't know how to behave yourself, you will feel embarrassed. Here are some tips for the table etiquette.
When helping a woman pull her chair to the table, hold it and guide it. Don't shove(碰撞)it against the back of her legs. If you're seated at a table with eight or fewer guests, wait for everyone to be served and for the hostess(女主人)to begin eating before you dig in. At a long banquet table, it's OK to start when several people are seated and served.
If you prefer not to have wine while dining out, don't turn your glass upside down, and don't make a big deal of saying you don't drink. Simply place your fingertips on the rim(边缘)of the glass and say “Not today, thanks.”
When you excuse yourself to go to the restroom, just say “Please excuse me.”
When out with friends or family—even at a fancy restaurant—it's OK to ask for your leftovers(吃剩的饭菜)to be wrapped. But don't do it at a business lunch or dinner.

As a saying goes, “If you have a good friend, your joys are doubled and your sadness is halved.” Friends are a helping hand, a comforting shoulder, a patient ear to listen to you. Man is a social animal by nature. We all need friends. So it is necessary for you to know how to make friends.
The first step is to open yourself up. If you want to make good friends, you should be able to share your thoughts and feelings with other people first. When you are in a conversation, you’d better express your own thoughts and feelings. If a conversation is one-sided, the person doing all the talking may think the other person is not interested in what he is saying.
One of the most important keys to building a strong friendship with other people is to listen to them—really listen.
When your friends tell you something that happened to them or complain about a situation, they are usually not looking for agreement but just want to be heard. So don’t try to change their mind or work out their problems, just let them know that you are listening to them.
Respecting your friends is also important to keep your relationships healthy and strong. Looking at your friends while they are talking to you is one way to show your respect, as they will feel that what they are saying is important to you.
Unconditional support and encouragement is one of the things which friends have. True friendship means offering a shoulder when they need it, crying with them when they are sad, and laughing with them when they are happy. Only in this way, the tree of friendship can last for a long time.
