Over the past ten years, great changes have taken place in my hometown. In the past, the houses in our hometown were very poor, but now there are a lot of tall buildings here and there. Many people have moved into tall buildings. They live a happy life. The water in the river was very dirty in the past. People threw the rubbish everywhere and the factories poured dirty water into the river, too. There wasn’t any fish in the river. The water was black and smelt bad. But now the river is very clean; there are many kinds of fishes in the river and people can even swim in the river. After supper, people usually go for a walk by the side of the river. In the past, people used to ride bikes or go to work on foot, but now they ride their own motorbikes even drive their own cars. You can see more and more cars on the road.

Nowadays, short videos have become an important part in people’s daily life. They are popular among people of all ages. Short videos, usually lasting from 15 seconds to a few minutes, have become the fastest-growing trend (趋势) in China. Packed with music and special effects, they are usually fun for both their makers and viewers. When people look through short videos, time flies. Although many of them regret wasting time after doing so, none of them take it seriously since almost everyone seems to join.
If you want to keep it away, the most helpful way is not to remove (移除) apps but to learn about what leads to such a situation.
Firstly, short videos satisfy people’s strong wishes for watching and being watched. The feeling of being watched makes them feel successful. Watching others’ lives makes some people feel they are rich in life experience. Secondly, the advertisement (广告) of relative companies is one of the causes. In the ads, the apps promise that people can learn something. Actually, short videos are a kind of fragmented (片断的) information. So, we can learn nothing except wasting time. Last but not least, they create short-time happiness. It seems to lower the sadness for the people who feel unhappy in real life.
In a word, we must realize that short videos have taken up too much time. We shouldn’t depend on them for living and the real world holds more value for us to fight for.

Run-down buildings, rotted(腐烂的)doors, rusty(生锈的) machines. this is how you might picture the old industrial sites(工业场地). But many of them now have a new look in China.
Shougang Industrial Park in Shijingshan district of Beijing is now a famous and popular culture and sports site. However, it used to be a steel mill (钢铁厂)that was built in 1919. It once housed 60, 000 workers and made more than 10 million tons of iron(铁) and steel. To protect the environment, however, the mill slowly reduced its production from 2005 until it closed in 2010.
With the government’s support, the old mill has been reborn. Cafes, bookstores, hotels, and offices now fill Shougang’s warehouses and blast furnaces(高炉). Self-driving cars move around the place for testing. And during the 2022 Winter Games, Olympic athletes flew down from the Big Air Ramp, which is now in front of Shougang’s former(之前)cooling towers.
In recent years, many old factories and mills have been turned into cultural and tourist sites. At the 2022 Winter Olympics Su Yiming became the first Chinese snowboarder to win a gold medal in the men’s big air event. Behind the huge success is hard work.
Back in 2018, the 14-year-old boy was faced with a difficult decision: To be as an actor, or to go all in on snowboarding. “I only have one word to describe my feelings for snowboarding. It’s love, deep from my heart,” Su said, “It’s my happiest moment when I stand on the snowboard no matter how long I train, even for seven or eight hours at most at a time.”
After the competitions, Su Yiming wrote a letter to President Xi to express (表达) his resolve (决心) to continue working hard. Su said in his letter that he was born in a great country and raised in the best times. To his surprise, he got a reply. President Xi expressed his hope for young Chinese to keep the motherland at heart, aim high, and have their feet firmly on the ground. “This has encouraged me to work even harder in the future. Peter kept his eyes on the ground. He felt like there was a heavy weight on his shoulders as he walked home alone. It was the worst day of his life. His mind would not stop thinking about what happened only just an hour ago on the school soccer field. How could he have missed scoring that goal? He had let his whole team down. His stupid mistake made him angry. His team had lost the game because of him. He was really worried that his coach might kick him off the team. As soon as he walked through the door, his father asked, “What’s wrong, son? Peter’s feelings were written all over his face. “I lost the game,” Peter replied. Then he went into his room without another word. Ten minutes later, Peter heard his father knocking on his bedroom door. He opened the door to let him in.
“Look, Peter. I don’t know what happened. But whatever it was, don’t be too hard on yourself.” “I lost the game, Dad. I failed my team. They’ll probably never let me play again.”
“Soccer is about team effort. You’re not the only reason your team lost. If you have a good team, you should support each other. Besides, winning or losing is only half the game. The other half is learning how to communicate with your teammates and learning from your mistakes.”
Peter didn’t say anything, but what his father said made him think carefully.
The next day, Peter went to soccer practice with courage rather than fear in his heart. “Hey, guys,” he said to his teammates. “I’m really sorry about yesterday. We were so close to winning that game. But I think if we continue to pull together, we’re going to win the next one.”
To his surprise and relief, his teammates all nodded in agreement.
“Yeah,” they said, “don’t worry about it. It’s never just one person’s fault. We should think about how we can do better next time.”
Peter smiled. It made him feel lucky to know that he was on a winning team.

Kong Zi, Confucius in English, is a great philosopher. He lived and worked in China from 551 BC to 479 BC. He gave China and the world deep thoughts and ideas about life and how to live it well. They are known far and wide. Also, his works are studied in many top universities.
Confucius found out three main truths about a good life. First, he said we, should respect (尊重) the king. Next, we should do everything possible to respect each other. Finally, he believed that we can have a really good and happy life if we learn to live in harmony (和谐). This means that we should try to find a way to live peacefully both with each other, and with the natural world.
During his lifetime, Confucius travelled across China, working as a teacher. Wherever possible, he tried to put his ideas into action. None of his wise sayings were written down while he was alive. His followers collected them after his death. One of his greatest thoughts is that “Don’t do to others what you do not want others to do to you.” Slowly, people everywhere learned about as well as from his wisdom.
Today, Confucius is believed to be one of the greatest philosophers. His thoughts and ideas are studied and spread all over the world.
