Most plant will die if they don’t have enough water. But one plant, called the resurrection(复活)plant, seems to come back to life after it dies. This plant can still be there after a long time of terrible drought(久旱)because it travels to look for water. Many people say that one difference between plants and animals is that animals move from place to place to find food and water, while plants cannot. But in the desert areas of American West, the resurrection plant can move around to get what it needs, too.

When there is lots of rain, the resurrection plant grows like any other plant. It sends roots(根)down into the ground and has green leaves(叶子). But when there is little water, the resurrection plant pulls(拉)its roots back up and dries up. It turns into a brown ball of seemingly dead roots and leaves. This brown ball goes through the desert with the help of the wind.

As soon as it touches water, the resurrection plant begins to act like a normal plant again. Its leaves turn green once more as it starts to grow. It is resurrected or brought back to life again in a new place. Because this plant can live a long time with no water, it has become a popular house plant. For anyone who always forgets to water his or her plants, the resurrection plant can be a fantastic gift.

Glaciers are large pieces of ice that form in high mountains or near the poles(极地)over many years. They are made up of fallen snow that gets pressed and move slowly over land. Glaciers are helpful for scientists to learn about what the weather was like thousands of years ago.

Glaciers cover around 11% of the earth’s total land area. They form the largest reservoir(水库)of fresh water on the planet. In fact, they store about 70% of the world’s fresh water. The world’s largest glacier is Lambert Glacier in Antarctica, about 400 km long and 2.5 km deep!

Earth’s glaciers are melting(融化)faster than scientists thought. A study shows that we are losing 369 billion tons of snow and ice each year. Because of warming weather, the melting glaciers are adding more water to already rising seas.

Icebergs are large pieces of ice that have broken away from glaciers and ice shelves. Icebergs float(漂浮)in the sea. Most icebergs are white. There are also blue icebergs. Surprisingly, there are green icebergs in Antarctica. Scientists found green icebergs have 500 times more iron than glacial ice. This is an important finding, as these green icebergs can send iron to far parts of the ocean to tiny sea plants.

We can only see about 10 percent of most icebergs. This is where the phrase “tip of the iceberg” came from, meaning we can only see a small part of a large problem.

Icebergs are dangerous to ships. The underwater ice can easily tear(撕开)a hole in the bottom of a ship. In 1912, the Titanic, on its way to New York, hit an iceberg and sank. More than 1, 500 people died.

We have to accept the truth: Sometimes, we just want to shout out loud.

For example, we all have days like this: When we just cleaned our room, the dog made a mess on the floor. Or our friend called to tell us he or she couldn’t come at the last minute after we cooked dinner for him or her. We may be really angry but we tried to bear(忍受) things like those. According to ancient Chinese wisdom(至理 名言), we should shout in a loud voice instead of keeping quiet. In fact, it’s good for our health.

“Chinese people pass on the practice as a part of traditional medicine,” said Mrs. Li, a 60-year-old woman from Hangzhou. “My parents taught me to do this. It ’s a part of our folk(民族) culture.”

Mrs. Li is a member of a group of people, and she loves shouting. Each morning, she and some of her friends climb to the top of a hill and let out loud shouts before starting their daily exercise. They believe that shouting is good exercise for them and it brings them a lot of fun.

“Sometimes I shout out and others shout back,” said Mrs. Gu, another shouting lover. “It makes you happy. You laugh and then you feel very comfortable.”

Dr. Peter Calafiura, an American doctor, agrees that shouting can have a good influence(影响) on people’s health.

So, next time you start your morning run, why not try to shout out first? It will make you healthier.

“Zero calories (卡路里) can’t put on weight.” Diet soft drinks are often advertised in this way. But are they really a good choice?

Some people think diet soft drinks are healthier because they don’t have sugar or calories. They think drinking these drinks can help them lose weight.

In fact, diet soft drinks do have some sugar, although very little. Usually, when there is 0. 5 grams (克) of sugar or less in a 100 gram drink, we call it a diet soft drink.

Although they have little sugar, diet soft drinks still taste sweet by using artificial sweeteners (人工甜味剂). They have very few calories.

But when you eat sweet-tasting things like sugar, it hits your brain and makes you want more. Your brain tells your body to prepare itself for more sugar. When you drink a diet soft drink, the brain receives the “sweet signal (信号)”, but no sugar arrives. Since the brain is fooled, it still wants more sweets.

Some people drink diet soft drinks and they don’t drink water. This is not a good choice. Diet soft drinks can make your teeth bad and let you not want to eat. The additives (添加剂) in these drinks are not good for you either.

1. Do any people think diet soft drinks are healthier because they don't have sugar or calories?
