Since the outbreak(爆发) of the pandemic(疫情), it has made its way around the world. It has a strong influence on our daily life. People have found a way to protect themselves by wearing face masks(口罩). We must wear masks anywhere in public. But the masks are onetime items. This means that we need to discard(去弃) them after one or two uses. The world has seen wasted masks strewn(散布在) all over the streets and filling up garbage bins(垃圾箱).
Experts have pointed out that the materials used in masks are difficult to degrade(降解). It will take at least 100 years for them to degrade naturally. Environmentalists become quite worried because a countless number of wasted masks have ended up in the sea! They are polluting the sea! The sea animals suffer(遭受) a lot and so do we humans. If the sea animals eat them by mistake, the rubbish will be hard to digest(消化) and stay in their stomachs forever. The bacteria on the masks may kill them too. They will not only largely influence the ecological balance(生态平衡) of the sea, but also can spread some more dangerous illnesses. People will also leave these harmful things in their own bodies and may become ill when eating these sea animals.
In general, the harm of wasted masks to the sea is serious, so we must take action to stop it in a proper way right now. We should leave them in a safe place and find a wise way to recycle them.
1. How do people protect themselves in the pandemic?2. How long will it take for the wasted masks to degrade naturally?
3. Why do environmentalists become very worried?
4. Are the wasted masks easy to digest in the sea animals’ stomachs?
5. What is the writer’s purpose of writing the passage?

Hello. We are students from Thailand, and we want to save the elephants. The elephant is one of Thailand’s symbols. Our first flag had a white elephant on it. This is a symbol of good luck.
Elephants are smart animals. They can play soccer or music. They can also draw very well. People say that “an elephant never forgets”. Elephants can walk for a long time and never get lost. They can also remember places with food and water. This helps them to live.
But elephants are in great danger. People cut down many trees so elephants are losing their homes. People also kill elephants for their ivory. Today there are only about 3,000 elephants (over 100,000 before). We must save the trees and not buy things made of ivory. Remember that March 13th is Thai Elephant Day.

Dust and sand storms are among nature’s most terrible phenomena (现象). High winds lift dirt or sand particles (颗粒物) into the air, causing air pollution, property damage, injuries, and deaths. No matter where you are, it’s a good idea to know what to do. Here are some ways to protect you if you see a wall of sand racing toward you.
Put a mask over your nose and mouth. If you have a mask designed to filter out small particulates, put it on at once. If you don’t have a mask, put some other pieces of cloth around your nose and mouth. Try to make it a bit wet if you have enough water.
Protect your eyes. Eyeglasses offer protection from blowing dust or sand, but airtight goggles (密封护目镜) are better. If you don’t have goggles, protect your face with your arm as you move. Then wrap a piece of cloth in a quick way around your head to protect your eyes and ears.
Keep yourself from flying objects. Cover as much of your body as possible to protect yourself from the sand. The sand can hurt, but a dust storm’s high winds can also carry more dangerous objects. If you find yourself without protection, try to stay low to the ground and make a protection of your head with your book, a backpack or a pillow.
Wait out the storm. Don’t try to move through the storm. It’s not safe. Stay where you are and wait for it to pass before you try to move to a different location. If you can quickly reach your home before a dust storm reaches you, get there as quickly as possible and stay inside. Close all windows and doors, and wait out the storm.
As is known, dust and sand storm are one of the most terrible phenomena that we have experienced. They have a bad |
Being tired of my noisy life in the city, I wanted to breathe some fresh air and experience a new kind of life. So I joined the “Earth care Project”. When I set out, I took nothing with me but some bad emotion(情绪).However, when the trip was over, my backpack was full of things, including joy, sadness, beautiful views and some knowledge about life.
In this exchange project, I was glad that I could get along well with the strange participants(参加者) from other countries. We tried to take care of each other. The group leaders, Paul and Reg, were both nice. They were very knowledgeable about plants, animals and the environment. However, they were completely different from each other-----one was very quiet and the other was very outgoing. They were a really interesting pair.
1 . That was really encouraging. I felt very happy that I had done something useful for the earth with my own hands.
On this trip, I learned to watch and think more about the world around me, rather than just caring about myself. We should be kind to life. We should not only treat human beings well, but also animals, plants and nature. After this trip, I feel that I have become more active and outgoing. I won’t miss another trip like this in the future.
1. Why did the writer join the “Earth Care Project” at first?2. Where did the participants of the project come from?

People know the dangers of fires. It’s good for a family to learn how to prepare for a fire. There are some suggestions:
Put a smoke alarm in the house. Smoke from a fire causes the alarm to go off. The alarm makes a loud sound. The sound tells everyone to leave the house at once.
Make escape (逃) plans. They should know all the ways out of the house. If there is a fire, everyone follows the plan to get out. Part of the plan is to check all the windows to make sure they can be opened easily.
Buy fire extinguishers (灭火器) in the house. Everyone in the family should know how to use them. Practice for a fire. They do fire practice because they teach children about fire safety.
Everyone in the family should know the following fire rules:
Don’t open a hot door! The fire can grow more quickly if you open the door. Stay close to the floor! Smoke can be dangerous than fire. The best air is near the floor because smoke rises. What will you do if your hair or clothes start to burn! First, stop! Don’t run! The fire burns faster because of more air. Drop! Fall to the floor. Then roll (打滚)! Turning over and over will make the fire go out. Put a blanket around you to keep air away from the fire that may still be on you.
There are many possible causes for fires. A wise family is ready all the time. If there is a fire, don’t forget to call 119 for help.

There are many holidays and festivals. Dads have Father’s Day. Mums have Mother’s Day. But do our grandparents have a Special festival? Yes, they do!
The Double Ninth Festival is a special day for older people in China. It started long ago. The festival is on lunar September 9th. On this day, people show love and respect to their grandparents.
There are many ways in which Chinese people express their respect. When an older person enters a room, everyone stands. People are introduced from the oldest to the youngest. When we present a book to an older person, two hands are used. Young people always offer their seats to older people on a crowded subway or bus.
Respecting older people is a tradition in China. That’s because the Chinese know that older people have knowledge and experience that young people can learn. Chinese people are proud of being old.
In Western countries, however, older people seldom think they are old. They are called “seniors” instead of “old people”. They’d rather do everything themselves. Even after retirement (退休) they take up hobbies, part-time jobs and new activities to keep their bodies working well.
Westerners respect their older people, too. Usually, seniors don’t have to buy tickets for trains and buses. They are given discounts (打折) in stores and restaurants.
But Western seniors don’t often live with their children — they live alone. For holidays, the family usually gather at the grandparents’ home, and a great smile and a warm hug for their parents are enough for grown children to show their respect.

3. What can the young learn from older people?
4. Can seniors in Western countries take the trains for free?

Do your parents ever say, “act like a lady(淑女)” or “be a gentleman(绅士)” to you? But in the eyes of today’s teenagers, what should a lady o r a gentleman be like? Let’s take a look.
What is a gentleman? The girls have their ideas:
Huang Xiaoyu of Guizhou: A gentleman doesn’t always get angry. He wants others to be well and happy. He is always helpful. There is a boy in my class and I think he is a gentleman. If I don’t do well in English, he will say, “You will do better soon.” That makes me feel happy.
Chen Tingting of Shenzhen: A gentleman always says, “Ladies first.” When students clean up the classroom, he does the heavy work. He lets girls go into rooms first. There is no gentleman my class. When there is something to eat, the boys in my class always get them before girls.
What is a lady? Boys tell us what they think a lady is:
Wu Yifan of Dalian: A lady is quiet and kind, but she’s not shy and she can talk about her ideas in front of others. To me, Dong Jie, a film star, is a lady. She is pretty and she is kind. She does a lot for others.
Wang Lichao of Tianjin: A lady is not just beautiful but clever. She never says bad words. She is quiet and kind to others. I don’t think there is a lady in my class. Most of girls are wild(野蛮的) beauties, I think.

Courage may make you confident of your success. If you have courage, you will not show fear in face of anything difficult or dangerous. With courage, you mak look someone in the eye who you have wronged and say “I am sorry”: you may still smile even if you are seriously ill and know you are at the end of your life.
How can we build up our courage?
Believe you will be successful. Take chances and know that you have your own talents. Besides, your family and friends are always there for you.

Here’s some advice on how to succeed in your online language exchanges:
How to start a conversation when speaking English online
When you speak to somebody online, start by asking “Yes or No” questions. Use questions such as “Do you like …” or “Can you …” or “Have you ever …”
Remember your goal. You are trying to learn about the other persons. Think about things you enjoy and try to find some common ground between you. And share your own experiences to show that you have similar interests. If you only ask questions, you will sound like a policeman or a policewoman!
How to keep a conversation going
“Listen” carefully. In that way, you can get to know somebody well. When you know him or her well, you will have more to talk about. Then ask follow-up questions. After you “listen”, use what you “hear” to learn more about that person. Use “open ended” questions, such as “What do you think of …” or “What was the most interesting experience ...”
Remember some basic rules for online language exchanges
Be patient. Do not try to find a good friend right away.
Be careful. It is dangerous to give any personal information on the Internet, especially your address, telephone number, and even your real name.
