Do you know your mobile phone number well? Your number has 11 digits(数字). You may sometimes find it hard to remember your number. That’s because China has the longest mobile phone numbers in the world. Why is that?
The 11 digits include three parts. Each part has a different meaning. The first three numbers tell you the mobile phone service provider you are using. For example, 135 is for the China Mobile Communication Corporation(中国移动)and 188 is for China Unicom(中国联通). The fourth to the seventh digits tell you where the number is from. And the last four digits are random (随机的).
The main reason for using 11 digits is that we have the largest population in the world. We once had 10 numbers. But as our population grew, there were not enough numbers for us to use. So we began to use 11 digits from 1999.
Eleven digits can make tens of billions of mobile phone numbers. That’s enough for each person to have seven or eight phone numbers to use in China. Also, we can use the mobile phone numbers again. Usually, the service provider will use a canceled number again after three to six months. If you call a number that you haven’t called for a long time, you may find its owner has changed.
Besides China, Britain and Japan also use 11-digit mobile phone numbers. But their numbers always start with 0. So they cannot make as many numbers as we can. Countries like the United States, Australia and India use phone numbers with 10 digits. Canada’s mobile phone numbers are perhaps the world’s shortest: they use seven digits.

Rob Leibowitz wore a T-shirt while walking around Disney World with the words: “In Need of Kidney, O Positive.” A few months after a picture was posted on Facebook, Leibowitz, who had been on the list for several year, had a successful surgery with a kidney donated (捐赠的肾脏) by a complete stranger. Although this story might be unusual, it made me wonder: can medicine and fashion intersect in other ways?
They might seem like as strange a combination as red and green. Yet fashion is already being considered in heath care settings. For example, the effect (影响) of hospital gowns on patients has been studied, and many patients report feeling a loss of privacy (隐私) when putting on a gown. The gown even drove patients to have the idea that they were unwell.
As a result, designers (设计师) have rethought what a patient gown could look like. Such redesigns have not been widely accepted by hospitals yet, perhaps because the gowns have to be cheap, easy to make and easily washable. However, gowns in different sizes and colors might help give the patients a feeling of control and support—especially when so much is out of their control.
In fact, creative solutions to patient gowns have already been shown to have some positive effects. At Weill Cornell, young patients undergoing MRI scans (核磁共振检查) were given an “MRI-am-a-Hero” kit to make the experience feel like part of a superhero adventure. Researchers found that the number of kids who needed medicine to stay calm decreased (减少).
My own experience also has shown me the value of thinking about how important fashion can be in medical settings. A few years ago, I was working on a study about how patients could find kidney donors through social networks. I remember asking one woman about her pink shirt, with “Help Me Find a Kidney” on the front and a picture of her and her family printed on the back. “Every time I put it on,” she explained, “I am reminded that there is still hope.”

Being the international common language, English has lent itself willingly to be used on social media, experiencing many small but important changes during the process. What are the effects of the social media on the English language?
♦ Old words but new meanings
When someone wants to post something on his“wall”, why do we think of the homepage of his Facebook, and not the walls in his house? This is the magic of social media. We know“friend”is a noun, but now it's also used as a verb. “friended”and“unfriended”mean the process of adding or deleting someone from your list of friends.
♦__________________________
Social media has invented new words like“selfie”or“emoji”to describe the new things. The most famous of these words perhaps is “google”which is used more than the old-fashioned simple word“search”.Generally speaking, a new word should be in use for at least 10 years before being entered in the Oxford English Dictionary. However, the dictionary officially included the word“tweet”.
♦Introducing acronyms(缩略词)
LOL (Laugh Out Loud). OMG (Oh My God) and BRB(Be Right Back)are examples of acronyms, the same as IDK(I Don’t Know)and TTYL(Talk To You Later). We need them to be short in length on social media, so we use acronyms to take the place of these phrases.
Social media is without doubt here to stay. In the future, it's likely to develop to a greater degree and take the English language along with it on the road of development.

When you think of car parts, you might not think of computers. But a small unit of a computer, called the microprocessor (微处理器), is very important in modern cars. And these microprocessors, often called chips (芯片), are used to control many different parts of a car. A modern car may have as many as 150 chips.
Last year, with the world locked down because of COVID-19, many carmakers had to close their factories. Since they didn’t make cars, they canceled many of their orders with chip makers, which forced the chip makers to stop making so many chips for cars. They started looking for other customers, and soon began selling lots of chips to other kinds of companies. Now those carmakers are ready to start making lots of cars again, but there aren’t enough chips. Another reason for the chip shortage (短缺) is that there aren’t many companies making them.
How bad is it? The chip shortage has already caused carmakers to produce 500,000 fewer cars, according to a company that studies the car business. The company expects that number to drop by 300,000 more cars this year.
In the US, President Joe Biden asked the government for $37 billion to help make sure that more chips would be made in the future. Evens, it’s unlikely to solve the problems the carmakers face now in a short time. Most people expect the chip shortage will last for months.

Several keywords will help to find better results. Use more than one keyword when you are doing a search. If you want to find out about seagulls, for example, search for bird seagull and not just seagull because seagull might also be the name of just about anything else, from a hotel to a documentary film.
Exact information can help you find what you are looking for. If you are looking for an exact sentence, e.g. “seagulls are very clever”, type (打字) it between inverted commas (“”), and only exact matches will be shown. This is very useful when you want to find something that you’ve already seen but lost.
Avoid common words like “a” or “the” in a search. These aren’t always helpful and usually unnecessary.
Add a minus symbol (—) if you don’t want some of the results. For example, “seagull-hotel-film” will leave out all information of hotels and films in the result.
Check out your spelling. Make sure that you spell every word in the search box correctly. The smallest typing mistakes can bring unwanted results, especially when the mis-typed word appears.
Have a filter(过滤软件). It’s a good idea to filter your online searches, especially when you are searching pictures. Ask an adult to help you add a filter. There are many kinds of them available.
Try different search engines(搜索引擎) until you find the one that’s best for you. Some search engines personalize(个性化) the results. So if you want to get different results, you’d better check out the search engines which don’t do this.
1. Why can’t we use one keyword to look for something on the Internet? ________A.It can guide us to find wrong information. | B.It can make the computer work more slowly. |
C.It can mean nothing but itself on the Internet. | D.It can make us waste much time finding the exact information. |
A.Pandas—live—in—China | B.The pandas live in China |
C.“Pandas live in China” | D.Pandas live in China |
A.By adding a filter. | B.By trying different search engines. |
C.By checking out unnecessary results. | D.By asking adults for advice on how to get them. |
A.The smallest typing mistakes bring us no results. | B.There is some wrong information in some websites. |
C.Different search engines can show us the same results. | D.Some search engines meet different people’s different needs. |
It has more than 845 million users worldwide. If it were a country, it would have the third largest population in the world, behind China and India. This is Facebook, a popular website from the US. It is similar to Renren in China.
Mark Zuckerber was born on May 14, 1984. As a little kid, he loved creating little fun computer programs. He set up the network in February of 2004. People can exchange message and get the latest information about their friends on Facebook. What’s the young man’s secret to success? Zuckerberg believes it’s important to have an open mind and be ready to try new things. “The riskiest thing is to take no risks,” he once said in an open letter. Want to be luckier? Some people believe that finding a heads-up penny is good luck. The odds that a found penny will be heads up are one in two.
Good-luck seekers(探求者) can also break a wishbone(叉骨,如愿骨). Two people hold a wishbone, make a wish, then break it. It is said that the person who gets the bigger piece will get his or her wish. The odds of getting the bigger piece are one in two.
According to Irish tradition, finding a four-leaf clover(三叶草) will bring you good luck. But just how hard is it to find one? For every ten thousand clovers you look at, the odds are that one of them will have four leaves instead of three.
When I was a kid, I once found a four-leaf clover in our backyard. I knew that four-leaf clovers are rare, but I didn’t know how “lucky” I was to find one until I read What Are the Odds? If I had known, I might have been more careful with it. I lost it soon afterwards — along with a lucky key chain and a lucky coin.
It’s fun to pretend that things like four-leaf clovers can bring us good luck. But I believe that we make our own good luck with hard work. Sometimes our hard work leads to success in ways we don’t expect. And often we are “lucky” when someone else takes the time to give us the help we need.
It’s fun to find a four-leaf clover and hope for good luck. But it’s more fun when we work hard and do our best and when we lend a helping hand to others — we can make true magic.
