My name is Linda. I’m a fourteen-year-old girl. I have three good friends Judy, Alice and Dave. Both Judy and Dave are at the same age as me, but Alice is one year younger than us. We four always spend a lot of time together because we have a similar interest-reading books.
Judy and I like reading history books, so we are better at history than Alice and Dave. Alice usually reads science books and she wants to be a scientist (科学家) when she grows up. She knows more about science than us. Dave is talented in drawing. Most of his drawings look fantastic. He really loves art. That’s why he reads much more art books in his free time. I think he can be an artist in the future (未来).
Four of us often go to the city library to read books together on weekends. Sometimes we are so interested in our reading that we even forget to eat lunch. After reading, we share our feelings with each other. We feel so lucky to have each other as friends.
1. Is Judy older than Linda?2. Who knows more about science than the other three?
3. Why do they feel so lucky to have each other as friends?
4. Do you like reading in the library? Why or why not?

A pop-up installation(弹出式装置) that looked like a bookstore was open in Shanghai. It drew much attention because of its unusual offering. The 9-square-metre place could hold only six people at a time. The 3000 old books on display were not for sale or loan(借出). Visitors could only read in the tiny bookstore.
“Our pace of life is getting faster. Today, we can only read books by using fragments(碎片) of time. The way we search for information has also changed from reading books to watching Tik Tok,” said Zhuang Jie, one of the five people behind the installation. “We hope to inspire(激励) visitors to rethink their way of reading while inside our bookstore. We also want to provide new option(选择) for the young generations(一代人), who have not experienced much traditional reading.”
During the 15-day display, the bookstore attracted about 500 visitors. Zhuang said that they had never expected so many people. “People were even willing to wait in line to enter. We realized that we might all love to read but just need a window to do it,” he said. The installation also proved to be a hit online. It was among the most searched terms(搜索词) on social platform Sina Weibo. Famous writer, Rao Xueman also mentioned the installation on her Weibo account. She hopes to roll out(推出) a similar project in the future.
Zhuang also said that more installations like this would be open soon. He mentioned these installations might have something to do with o1d toys and their stories.

Mia Bookhouse in Hanoi, Vietnam is a popular place for many book lovers. It opened in 2020 and its owner is Nguyen Thanh Trung.
Trung loves reading and learning languages. He bought lots of books when he was living in Germany and Australia and travelling to more than 50 countries. After coming back to Vietnam, Trung found that English books in Vietnam were either scarce (缺乏的) or very expensive. And many parents did not know which book would be suitable (合适的) for their children and how to guide them to read English books. Trung had a lot of books, so he decided to open a free library. He wanted to help children fall in love with reading and learn foreign languages.
Mia Bookhouse has around 2,000 books! Trung believes creating a real environment will help children learn foreign languages naturally and easily. So he made a rule: at Mia Bookhouse, everyone must speak English or other foreign languages.
There are volunteers at Mia Bookhouse. They help young readers pick out suitable books, read, and play games with them so that they can practise their reading, listening, and speaking skills.

She took good care of them. The birds grew strong. Every morning, they greeted her with a beautiful song. The girl felt great love for the birds. She wanted them to sing for her forever.
One day, the girl left their cage door open. The bigger of the two birds flew out. The girl watched as he rose high into the sky. She was afraid that he would fly away and she would never see him again. As he flew close, she caught him in her hand and held him tightly. She was happy. Suddenly, she felt the bird go limp (无力的). All life needs sunlight to live on. But only plants can use sunlight directly. Plants are “factories”.
They make food from sunlight, water and things in the soil and air. Plants feed all other living things. Animals can only use the suns energy after it has been changed into food by plants. Some animals feed directly on plants, others eat smaller animals. Meat-eating animals are only eating plants indirectly.
What about human beings? We are members of many food chains. We eat wheat, rice, vegetables, fruits and so on. We also eat meat and drink milk. ③But men often break up the food chains. They kill wild animals and make the rivers, lakes, and seas dirty. When these rivers, lakes and seas are polluted, the fish in them cannot be eaten. If men eat the fish, they will get strange diseases(疾病).
Each form of life is linked to all the others. Breaking the links puts all life in danger.

Each country or culture raises some animals for food. In the United States, people mainly eat meat from cows, chickens and pigs. In other countries, people might raise sheep or buffalo for meat. These differences come in part from weather and other environmental conditions. People around the world eat all kinds of fish and shellfish from oceans and rivers. In some countries, people don’t always choose some animals for food while in other countries such animals may become people’s favorite food, such as dogs.
In West Africa, animals provide humans with more than food. They have been helping people do daily work for thousands of years. Horses, oxen, and other work animals pull heavy things. Elephants, camels, and other animals carry people and things from place to place. Carrier pigeons (信鸽) have been used to send messages.
People also receive health benefits (利益) from animals. For example, dogs and cats can help calm people down. This is helpful for people fighting illnesses. Animals can also reduce stress, helping people to draw their attention to learning new information, such as reading. When people are walking their dogs or horses, it encourages exercise.
Animals and humans share space on Earth, so keeping a healthy relationship with animals around us is in our best interest.

Two tickets. Only two tickets to the big basketball game. Three pairs of eyes all focused on the tickets in Dad’s hand. Marcus asked, “Only two tickets? But, Dad, which of us gets to go with you?” “Yeah, Daddy, who gets to go?” repeated Caleb. “Dad, can’t you get any more tickets?” I asked. “I’m afraid not,” Dad answered. “Mr. Williams offered the two tickets to me when he found out he’d be out of town this weekend,” Dad smiled and added, “I’ll have to figure out a fair way of choosing between the three of you by tomorrow morning. I’ll have to decide who deserves (应得) it most.”
The next morning, Marcus hurried into the kitchen. “Where’s Dad?” he asked. “He and Mom went to the library,” Caleb answered. “And he said we should all get started on housework as soon as we finish breakfast,” I added. “Housework! He must be kidding,” Marcus said.
“I’m going for the preview (预告) of tonight’s game on the newspaper,” Marcus announced. “Wait for me!” Caleb rushed after his brother. I looked at the breakfast table in a mess. Well, I thought to myself, “It looks like Saturday morning housework starts right here.”
A few minutes later, as I was doing the housework, I heard the basketball bouncing (弹跳) off the driveway. I knocked on the window three times. The boys looked towards me. “Okay, we’re coming in to help. Just one more minute.”
I carried the rubbish bag out to the dustbin outside the back door. “You guys, Mom and dad will be back any minute,” I reminded them. I began to open the lid on the dustbin. Then a white envelope (信封) caught my attention. I noticed that someone had written the word “Congratulations!” on the front of the envelope and inside of it was the ticket!

My 18-month-old son, Adam, called from the front door, “Look! Mama! Dog!” I stopped what I was doing and looked out. Brandy, our next-door neighbor’s 11-year-old dog appeared there again. “Go away!” I said to the dog and brushed the dog hair off Adam’s T-shirt.
Brandy’s owner died about a month ago. The family emptied the house and moved away, but they left the old Brandy behind. For weeks, she walked around the neighborhood, living on food thrown away by the people.
Brandy went away, and I stayed with Adam. Then the phone rang. I went inside to answer the call. When I came back, Adam was gone. I was so nervous that I called the police. At last we found my son in the woods, and he was just inches away from the cliff (悬崖). Brandy was beside him, leaning against him to keep him away from the cliff. She must have been holding Adam there for hours!
I thanked the police and brought Adam back to our house. Brandy followed us. But she hesitated (犹豫) a moment on our doorstep. It seemed that she remembered the time I’d driven her away.
“Come on, girl,” I said. “This is your home now.” Brandy came in, and once she saw she was welcome, she relaxed and lay down on the floor just inside the door. She had done a great thing, and I wondered if she knew it.
