After I graduated (毕业) from the police academy, I couldn’t wait to do my part to save the world. However, I found out on my first day that I still had a lot to learn.
That morning. I arrived at the police station early. At 7 a.m., I went into my office and waited for orders. Suddenly, I realized that I hadn’t brought my walkie-talkie (对讲机). I went back to my locker (储物柜), but however hard I tried, I couldn’t get it open.
I saw a long stick lying next to the lockers and used it to hit the door. The locker opened, but I was amazed that it was empty. I thought I was going to be in trouble for losing my walkie-talkie on my first day.
It turned out that I had broken into the wrong locker. I went to my boss to admit my mistake. He told me to ask next time. I knew he must have been thinking. “You are really silly!”
After lunch, I received a call for an alarm (预警) at a building. This could be a theft—the first of my job. I couldn’t wait! I arrived on the scene with a colleague (同事) of mine and we found a closed company building. It was surrounded (被包围) by a two-meter-high fence with razor wire (铁丝网) on the top.
The owner was away. My colleague was calling him to ask how we could get inside. I offered to help. I climbed the fence and got up to the top. I was trying to get my leg over the razor wire when my pants got snagged (被绊住).
I heard my colleague say, “Hey! Spider-man!” I looked down and saw that the owner had arrived. They opened the gate and went inside while I was struggling to free myself.
When we got back in the car, my colleague smiled at me and said, “We learn something new every day.” I knew it was his polite way of saying. “You are really silly!”

Father seemed to have no hobbies but just took care of his family.
Since I left home for college, my father called me every Sunday at 9:00 a.m.
He was always interested in my life--how my family was doing. The calls even came when he and my mother were in Australia, England or Florida.
Nine years ago I bought my first house. My lather, 67 years old, spent three days painting my house, eight hours a day. All lie asked was a glass of iced tea, and that I hold a paintbrush for him and talk to him. But I was too busy with work to take the time to hold the paintbrush, or talk to my father.
Five years ago, my 71-year-old father spent five hours putting together a swing set (秋千) for my daughter. Again, all he asked was that I get him a glass of iced tea, and talk to him. But again, I had other jobs to do.
On the Sunday morning, 16 January 1995, my father telephoned me as usual. This time seemed forgetful. I had to get to church, and I cut the conversation short.
The call came at 4:40 a.m. which said father was sent to hospital in Florida. I got on a plane immediately. I vowed(发誓)that when I arrived, I would make up for the lost time, for I owed(欠)him a nice long talk.
I arrived in Florida at 6:00 a.m., but my father had passed away hours before. This time he did not have time to talk, or time to wait for me.
