The well-known “new great inventions” of modern China have made our daily lives more convenient.
High-speed trains
China created its first high-speed railway line in 2008. Since then, the number of passenger trips has grown by over 30 percent every year. By 2016, more than 5 billion trips had been taken on the trains. By 2020, one-fifth of the country’s 150, 000-km railway network will be used by the trains. This network will link more than 80 percent of the major cities across China.
Mobile payment
Mobile payment is turning China into a “cashless society”. Instead of paying by cash, customers now pay for their goods and some kinds of bills simply by typing a short password into the Alipay or Wechat app on their mobile phones.
Shared bikes
China has surprised the world with how quickly shared bikes are widely used. Nowadays, bike users can simply pick up or park the bikes on the street through GPS and smartphone apps. China’s two leading bike-sharing companies, Mobike and Ofo, have been opening their overseas markets in Singapore, the UK and the USA.
Online shopping
With around 751 million Internet users, China has been the world’s largest and fastest-growing online shopping market. Because of lower costs and fewer licensing requirements, it’s easier for sellers to open an online shop in China. In 2016, more than 20 million jobs in rural areas were created, with over 8.1 million running their own online shops.

Li Dan Earlier last year, I liked to lie in bed and watch videos instead of studying. This influenced my studies and made my grades worse. So my parents set up a camera to keep an eye on me. It worked. With the camera watching, I had to do my homework first and make plans for studying at home. When I was alone at home, the camera made me feel safe because I knew that my parents were watching on the other side. My grades improved after a year. | Zhang Hua When I was in Grade 8, my parents set up a camera in my room. I really didn’t like it because I felt like there were always eyes watching me. I felt so uncomfortable that I couldn’t sleep well at night. Knowing there was a camera around when my friends came to my home, they would speak quietly and carefully. I was sad. Do you have bright ideas?ideas for inventions that change society or,at least, make life easier for somebody?Perhaps we all do sometimes, but we don't often make the idea a reality.
Recently, in Britain, there was a competition called British Designers for Tomorrow. The competition encourages young people to carry out their bright ideas. There were two groups in the contest: Group One was for schoolchildren under 16; Group Two was for schoolchildren over 16, and there were eleven prize-winners altogether. Neil Hunt, one of the prize-winners, was called "Sunshine Superman". It's important when people study the weather to be able to record sunshine accurately. We need to know how many hours of sunshine we have and how strong it is. Most sunshine recorders only record direct sunlight. Neil's is more accurate and this is very important for research into the way of using solar power. You can do so much with animated cartoon. Look at Simon West's idea for animated road signs. He uses pictures which appear to move as you go nearer to or farther from them. This isn't a new idea. But itis new to use these pictures on road signs. "We found that people were more likely to see moving signs," said Simon.
So now, you can really see rocks falling, trains moving, horses running or a car falling over the edge of a cliff. Quite a caution! The ideas in the competition were so inventive that we are surprised that British industry doesn't ask more schoolchildren for suggestions. Perhaps this will be the start of "pupil power!"

Talking Gloves
Four foreign students have created a pair of gloves, and it helps people to communicate (交流) with people who have hearing and speaking problems. The gloves are equipped with sensors (配备传感器). They recognize (识别) sign language and translate it into text on a smartphone. Then the smartphone changes the text to spoken word. Thus you can understand sign language easily.
Google Glasses
Google Glasses are like a computer built into a pair of glasses. Then the glasses allow you to surf the Internet (上网) and make calls without even lifting a finger. The glasses also have a camera and the GPS mapping system. Users can take and share photos, check maps and surf the Internet just by looking up, down, left and right.
Indoor Clouds
That’s a real world. An artist, Smilde, managed to create a small but perfect white cloud in the middle of a room using a fog machine. But it required careful planning — the temperature, and lighting all had to be just right. The cloud only lasted for a short while, though.
Wingsuits
The suit realizes your dream of flying like a bird. Well, not exactly flying, but gliding (滑翔) through the air. It increases the surface area of the human body, which makes it easier for people to float in the air. Fliers wearing wingsuits can glide one kilometer in about 30 seconds.

Some of the world’s most important scientists think the idea of people living on Mars will come true one day. Stephen Hawking believed humans must move into space to live. “Once we spread out into space and build independent colonies (殖民地), our future should be safe,” he said. Robert Zubrin, a rocket scientist, agrees and thinks sending people to Mars will allow us to learn a lot—for example, about the ability of humans to live in a very different environment.
★ Terraforming means changing the environment on a planet so that it is similar to Earth’s. One of the main goals of terraforming Mars is to warm it up because the average temperature there is about -60 °C. One idea for warming Mars is to build factories there that produce greenhouse gases. This could take many centuries. However, it should lead to rainfall and the growth of plants, resulting in more air that people can breathe.
Another big concern for scientists is whether humans can move to Mars and still stay healthy in mind and body. As a test, six people lived in a Mars-like environment in Hawaii for a year before “returning to Earth” recently. It was a 1, 200-square-foot room that was on the side of a volcano (火山) and used the sun for energy. Christiane Heinicke, one of the people who lived there, said that one of the biggest problems was feeling bored. Another important finding was that the people living together should all be able to get along and work together.
One particular organization based in Europe is planning to send the first humans to Mars before 2030. However, many experts think the project’s cost of $6 billion is too low for it to be successful. The American space agency NASA believes that sending people to Mars would cost about $100 billion, although this estimate (估价) is based on bringing them back to Earth, too. Anyway, it seems that humans living on Mars may well happen a lot sooner than most people believe.
1. Paragraph 1 mainly focuses on ________.A.how we can move to another planet | B.why we work on moving to Mars |

A.the cost of moving to Mars | B.the energy on Mars |
C.the physical quality of people | D.the food on Mars |
A.humans | B.scientists | C.planets | D.cost |
A.The temperature on Mars is 60 degrees above zero. |
B.It is sure to send the first humans to Mars after 2030. |
C.$6 billion is enough to send people to Mars. |
D.Moving to Mars would be good for mankind. |

The technology allows users to step inside an ancient house and visit it as its owner would have. Also, it helps researchers better understand how ancient Roman buildings were designed.
Researchers collected information by drones (无人机). And they used the information to create a 3D computer model of the ancient home known as the House of Greek Epigrams. They then put the model into a video game engine called Unity to make a VR model. Later, the researchers asked volunteers to take a virtual tour of the house in both summer and winter light. By using eye-tracking technology, researchers followed the eye movements of the volunteers. They recorded exactly which areas volunteers looked at and for how long. From this, researchers could see what areas drew the most attention.
This study has shown that it is Possible to collect and use information from the experience in a virtual Pompeian house. Its findings may greatly help future studies and offer people a better visiting experience in the Roman bouse. Next, researchers hope to recreate what ancient Romans heard and even smelled. In that way, they’re bringing Pompeii—a town frozen by time—back to life.

Then they decided to start a charity so that they could help these needy children. They called it Operation Smile. Operation Smile works in more than twenty developing countries and has cured over 10000 children who have problems with their mouths. Operation Smile has won many prizes for its work. On the other hand, Operation Smile trains local doctors and nurses in developing countries so that they can continue to help children when Operation Smile has left.
As to the children with much more serious problems, they will send them to America for further treatment. So show your kindness and generosity (慷慨) to the needy children now. You can send your donation to Operation Smile at local banks. Many thanks from the children who can smile now.
