Every culture around the world has different customs and ways of communicating. When you learn a language, you learn more than words.
In China, people are used to saying “sorry” to show that they regret doing something wrong. But it’s very proud for American people to have polite manners towards one another in public. They often use the word “sorry” —even when they don’t really mean it! Usually, if they want to ask a stranger for the time, they will start by saying “Sorry to trouble you. ” If they’re five minutes late for the appointment, they will greet the person by saying “Sorry, I’m late!” It’s quite different in China. They use the word “sorry” in so many different situations that the meaning of the word has changed a little over time. The two main dictionary definitions(定义)of “sorry” are: 1)feeling sad for someone else because of their problems or bad luck; 2)feeling regret because you’ve done something wrong.
So what does “sorry” really mean? And why do western people use it so much? Well, in western culture, saying “sorry” is a way to be polite. It’s also a very clever way to get what they want. If you want to borrow something from others, you’d better say “sorry” to them about something. Or it’s hard for you to get what you want. So maybe saying “sorry” is not only just being polite, but also a good method to get what you want!

However, Chinese seem unwilling (不愿意的) to accept praise. People in the United States and China think differently about the modesty. Americans prefer to accept praise because they think what you are praising is just the fact.
But Chinese prefer to refuse praise, even when they know they are worth praising. For example, if a Chinese basketball fan meets Michael Jordan of the Chicago Bulls, he might say, “Mr. Jordan, I am so excited to meet you. I just want to tell you, you are the best basketball player in the world. You’re the greatest!” Jordan would probably reply, “Thank you very much! I just try to do my best every time I step on the court.” However, if an American meets Deng Yaping, a Chinese excellent ping-pong player, he might say much the same thing, “Mrs. Deng, you’re the best!” But as a Chinese, Deng would probably say, “No, I really don’t play all that well. You’re too much kind.”
Clearly, Americans and Chinese have different ways of replying to praise. However, many Americans might consider Mrs. Deng’s reply is less truthful and less sincere (真诚的). Americans generally think sincerity is more important than manners. So when communicating with people from different backgrounds, it is of great importance to know the differences between cultures and to respect different cultures.

Sometimes, people say something to a friend or family member that they later regret (后悔)because hurts that person's feelings. Or they tell the person something they were not supposed to tell. The speaker might say: "I really put my foot in my mouth this time." If this should happen, the speaker might feel "down in the mouth." In other words, he might feel sad for saying the wrong thing.
Sometimes when one person is speaking, he says the same thing that his friend was going to say. When this happens, the friend might say: "You took the words right out of my mouth!"
Some people have lots of money because they were born into a very rich family. There is an expression for this, too. You might say such a person "was born with a silver(银子,银色的) spoon in his mouth."This rich person is the opposite of a person who lives "from hand to mouth." 【推荐1】Emmy Lopez is a girl from Chicago. She used to take dance lessons while her elder brother wrestled — but it turned out that she liked wrestling better. She has been practicing in a wrestling club for the last three years.
Lopez is not alone because a growing number of girls in her country are taking up wrestling. Officials with youth organizations in Chicago and the Illinois Kids Wrestling Federation (IKWF) said they had seen more girls taking part in the sport in recent years.
In the competition between 201-2018 and 2019-2020, the number of girls who joined the IKWF grew from 363 to 503. “There is a competition just for girls at the end of each year. In Lopez’s program, about half of the students joining in the club’s free youth wrestling camp this summer are girls.” Lopez’s coach Frank Zepeda said. The club also has an all-girls camp.
As Zepeda said, many of the girls become interested in wrestling through their brothers. “They probably just learn to fight back,” he said. One of those girls is Alice Miller, 12 years old. She took up wrestling because she was bored just watching her brother wrestle. “I can have fun doing it,” she said. “Girls are just as strong as boys are.” She won the girl’s state championship this spring.
Some colleges, such as North Central College, are planning to start girls’ wrestling programs. This will give girls more choices and encourage more of them to take up wrestling.

Researchers have developed paper that can be printed with UV light, free from the need for ink. People can clear the information away on the light-printable paper by heating it to 120℃ and it can be reused more than 80 times.
The research was carried out in order to reduce the effects of paper production. People just cut down too large amounts of trees every year to produce paper, which would destroy forests one day. That does harm to the environment. If people use the light-printable paper instead of paper they use now, the situation may be changed. The researchers, from Shandong University in China and the University of California, Riverside, said that the secret behind the technology is a color-changing chemical. A thin coating of the chemical can be used on usual paper and turn it into a reusable, light-printable one. Heating the paper for 10 minutes can help clear the information away more quickly.
Professor Yadong Yin, a chemistry professor at the University of California and a co-author of the study, said, “The greatest importance of our work is the development of a new technology to produce an ink-free rewritable paper that has the same feel and appearance as usual paper.” Their work is believed to have great economic and environmental influences on the modern society. Paper production has a bad influence on the environment. It’s the main reason to cause the industrial pollution, paper which is thrown away by people makes up about 40% of landfills where waste is buried under the ground.
It is said that light-printable paper will be inexpensive in the future. The printing process is also more cost-effective than the usual one because no ink is needed. Most importantly, it can be reused many times, which greatly reduces the cost.
