Do you ever feel like you are just running from one activity to another? In school, do you hurry from one subject to another? When things happen so fast, it’s easy to get lost of what you’re doing or learning. It’s important to stop yourself now and then to think about what you are doing or learning.
Self-reflection (反省) means slowing down and calming yourself down, including calming your mind. By being calm and not going quickly, you give your brain chance to think about what you have learned. Some people like to do self-reflections only in their mind. Others write down in diaries or notes. Both of the ways work, depending on your own personal learning. You can follow the steps to do self-reflection.
First, choose the proper time to do it. School textbooks are usually divided into units of study. This makes it easier to begin self-reflection. Look for time when you finish a unit of study. Sometimes you know the unit is over because there is some kind of test. Use these natural breaks to stop and do self-reflection.
Then, find a quiet place and take out your reflection diary. Write down some notes on the new things that you have learned in the unit. Let your mind think about the notes you’ve written before and make some connections (联系).
Finally, think about things that you’re not sure of. Maybe you learned a new way to work out a math problem, but you’re not sure when to use it. Writing down your questions will help you remember to look for answers the next time you are working with the same topic.
Self-reflection is important for a successful student. If you have never taken the time to do self-reflection, try it now.

These are the kinds of questions I’ve been wondering about since I first read The LifeChanging Magic of Tidying Up(《怦然心动的人生整理法则》) by Japanese organization expert Marie Kondo.
As people who have followed her program on tidying know, Kondo suggests we ask ourselves the simple question, “Does this create joy?”
It’s these four words that lead to a series of reflections(反思) on everyday things, and could even teach us a lesson about who we are.
You start by creating a pile of things in your home. This could be your clothes, old CDs, photographs or anything else you think you should “let go” of.
You lift one object from the pile and hold it in your hands and ask yourself whether it creates joy. Unbelievably(难以置信地), the answer will most likely always be no. This method makes us have enough courage to let go of the past.
Giving two-thirds of my things to various charities—Kondo says that gifting friends and family with our unwanted things is unfair and actually prevents us from moving on—meant more to me than just a tidier home.
My goal was to let go of bad memories from my past and focus on making some new, better ones.
I’m still working on achieving those goals, but in some ways I’m already there. By reflecting on all the objects I had spent years with, I rediscovered something I had long forgotten: the belief that I am already a whole person.

Reaching their summer breeding grounds at the wrong time—even by a few days—may cause birds to miss out their important resources such as food and nesting places. Late arrival to breeding grounds may, in turn, affect the timing of offspring (后代) hatching and their chances of survival.
The researchers have examined records of migrating bird species dating back almost 300 years. The study will help scientists know how different species may respond to future environmental change.

It is the “big idea” that runs through the text, connecting the characters and events. It is also what the writer wants to tell us through the story. Sometimes the theme of a text isn’t told directly. For this reason, you have to use clues (线索) in the text to find it out. Themes can be ideas like family, friendship, love and so on. The theme might not be just one word, but it might be an idea such as “Friendship is important.” There may also be more than one theme in a story.
The following steps may help you find out the theme of a text.
Read through the whole text quickly
(B) Usually characters change as the story goes on, so the theme you get at the beginning might not be true at the end! So you need to read through the whole text first.
Find out the clue
After reading the whole text, try to answer the following questions. What important events happened during the story? What was the problem? How did the problem get solved? How did the character(s) change? What did the character(s) learn? The answers may help you to get the clues.
Get the big idea
To get the writer’s purpose of the text, you can read it again. When you read, think of the following questions. Was most of the plot (情节) around friendship? Did the characters solve problems with their families? Did the main character learn the importance of friendship? If one of the answers is “yes”, you may get the big idea.
Check the big idea out
If you’ve found a “big idea”, go through the text to find the evidence (证据) that supports this idea in the text. For example, if there was only one small problem with a character’s family, then “family” might not be the theme of the text. You might find more evidence for other themes.
