There are many elderly people in Erdingford living on their own. Most of them find it difficult to go out and to look after themselves. Yet most of them love their homes and want to go on living in them as long as possible. Helping Hand is an organization and it helps such people to live independent lives in their own homes.
But our work depends on volunteers. They visit our clients (客户) and help them with daily activities, or just stay together with them for an hour or so. Some of the elderly clients we help have poor eyesight and often they need someone to read to them. Others just want to enjoy some friendly talks or playing cards or chess.
What you do for your client depends on three sides — you, your Volunteer Support Officer and the person you are helping. If you are not happy to do something, you can say no freely.
Working in Helping Hand is a win-win on both sides. On one hand, the volunteer can help to keep our elderly clients independent. On the other hand, volunteers learn so much from their clients’ life experience. As the 18-year-old volunteer Roy said, “I thought voluntary work would be a matter of doing little jobs for an old person I didn’t know, and then feeling glad with myself because I’d done something good. But it wasn’t really like that. It was more like a friendship: I learnt so much from Margaret about her generation (一代) , how things were in the past, and about life itself. And she took me seriously and always listened to what I said carefully. ”

Many people want to be happy, but few know how to find happiness. Money and success alone do not bring lasting happiness. Aristotle, a Greek thinker, said, "Happiness depends upon ourselves." In other words, we make our own happiness. Here are a few suggestions to help you be happier.
The first secret of happiness is to enjoy the simple things in life. Too often, we spend too much time thinking about the future—for example, getting into college or getting a good job—that we fail to enjoy the present. You should enjoy life's simple pleasures, such as reading a good book, listening to your favorite music, or spending time with close friends. People who have several close friends often live happier and healthier lives. Another secret to living a happy life is to be active, and have hobbies where you forget your problems and time. When playing a sport, such as swimming, many people forget about their problems, and only think about the activity. Finally, many people find happiness in helping others. If you want to feel happier, do something useful for someone. You can help a friend with his or her studies, or go shopping to buy food for the old.

Sometimes people come into your life and you know that they are there to teach you a lesson, or to help you understand who you are or who you want to become.
You never know these people who may be a classmate, a neighbour or a friend—but when you lock your eyes on them, you know at that very moment they will influence your life in some ways.
Sometimes things that happen to you may see m unpleasant, painful, or frustrating at first. But in another way, you find that without getting over those difficulties you would have never realized your ability, strength or will power(意志力).
The people you meet and the success you get help to create who you are and who you become. Even the bad experience can be learned from. In fact, they are sometimes the most important ones.
If someone loves you, give love back to them in the way you can, not only because they love you, but because in a way, they are teaching you to love and how to open your heart and eyes to things.
If someone hurts you, or breaks your heart, forgive(原谅) them, for they have helped you learn about truth and the importance of being careful of people around.
Self-confidence is necessary to a person. If you’re not confident, it will be hard for others to believe in you.
Learn a lesson in life each day you live!

To the Editor,
I’m writing as a member of One-on-One, the sixth-grade mentoring (指导) group. Our group is two years old and made up of 14 students. (A)Our task is to help students reach their goals through mentoring. We hope the readers of this school newspaper will join our group. This is my first year as a mentor, but I have learned everyone taking part in mentoring gets something out of it.
I was assigned (分配) to a mentor last year. Mentoring was one of the best things that happened to me. I was able to turn the corner at an important point in my studies, going from nearly failing math to passing it. It still amazes me that I completely changed from almost hating math to loving it! Would you believe I’m even thinking of studying math in college? Even if I don’t, I have skills that I will use for the rest of my life. My own experience made me feel certain of becoming a mentor this year and helping other students like myself. Now that I am a mentor, I realize what a good feeling you get from helping someone else and knowing that you’re making a difference in his or her life. In many situations, lasting friendships are made as well. My mentor and I hit it off right away. And we’re still good friends today.
Thank you for considering our mentoring group. We look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Mark Smith

【推荐2】Exploring Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine
Traditional Chinese herbal medicine is a very old way of helping people stay healthy. It uses plants, like ginseng (人参) and astragalus (黄芪), along with other things from nature to make special treatments. These treatments aim to make sure our bodies work well and stay balanced.
In this traditional way of helping, it’s believed that our body’s energy, called Qi, should move smoothly. Chinese herbal medicine helps bring balance and fix the root causes of sickness, not just the signs you see. These natural treatments are like special mixes chosen by doctors to help each person.
One well-known plant used in Chinese medicine is ginseng. It’s like a superhero herb that helps us deal with stress and feel more energetic. Another plant, astragalus, supports our immune (免疫) system and keeps us healthy. People often use these herbs in teas or powders.
Besides herbal medicine, there’s also acupuncture (针灸). It’s a practice where very thin needles (针) are put into special points on the body to help the energy flow better. Acupuncture and herbal medicine often work together for a complete way to make us feel better.
