Most people work until they are 60 or 65 years old. Then they retire (退休) and have a lot of free time. Some people never retire though. These people usually have very interesting jobs. Writers, artists, scientists and actors usually work until they die. Their work is their life.

Well guess what! Planting new trees is important because people cut down a huge number of trees. Last year, there were 3 trillion trees in the world, about 139 billion in China. But according to China Daily, the world’s total number has been almost cut in half since human civilization (文明) began. That’s because 15 billion trees are cut down every year.

So we need to plant more to make up for (弥补) the ones we lost. One tree can take in 21.8 kilograms of CO₂ per year. And it’s still one of the cheapest and best ways to get rid of CO₂.

But don’t forget that we can also help the environment by cutting down on how much energy (能源) or water we use every day. Every little thing helps.

Cotton fabric is made from the cotton plant, a small plant that’s easy to grow. The seeds (种子) of the cotton plant are surrounded by fluffy (绒毛般的) white fibers (纤维) for protection. These fibers are collected and made into cloth, which can then be made into many products.

The cotton seeds are not wasted, either. They are put in a machine that presses the oil out of them. This oil is a valuable product for cooking and is used in many kinds of food. The mush (碎屑) that’s left is used to feed animals, such as pigs and cows.

Nothing is wasted. That’s why cotton is a very useful plant. Even more importantly, cotton is a natural product. It doesn’t require a lot of energy to produce, and it can be renewed every year simply by planting a new crop.

The seasons in New Zealand are not like ours. When it is winter in China, it is summer there. New Zealand is a southern country, it is in the south of the world. July and August are the winter months; September, October and November are spring; the summer is in January, February and December, and March, April and May are the autumn months. The north of the country is hotter than the south.

A western part of this country has no rain at all. But the east coast has rain all year, and there are no dry months there. The southeast winds blow here all the year. They bring rain from the sea. There is not much rain on the west side. The southeast part of New Zealand has summer rain from the southeast winds. They only blow here in summer.
