Tang Cheng dreamed of being a scientist when he was a boy. So he worked hard and got a doctorate (博士学位) in science in 2021.     1     But he did something different. He decided to be a content creator (内容创作者).

In fact, Tang started sharing science videos online as early as 2018.     2     Later, he decided to make videos by himself. Although it was really difficult to do that, he kept working on it.     3     And it soon became very popular online. In his videos, Tang talked about many complicated (复杂的) topics in a simple and funny way. He hoped people could take an interest in science after watching the videos.

Tang thinks making videos is like studying science.     4     He often reads a lot of papers to find out the scientific name of an animal.

I’m a doctor in my hometown in England. I want to tell you a real story about a dog called Maya. Maya is a black and white dog. She is a famous star in my hometown now. Everyday, when I go to work, I see her lie* in the door of our hospital. Doesn’t she have a home? Yes, she does. She lives with her owner* Sandra.

●Attracted by Chinese dramas

Folke Borgstrom is an 18-year-old from Sweden. When he visited Beijing for the competition, he bought a jade necklace (玉石项链). Borgstrom said he knew about jade from a Chinese TV show. “A main character in the TV show wears jade and it makes him look cool. Jade can have many colors like green, red and white,” said Borgstrom. He became interested in it and started to learn more about it.

Borgstrom also enjoyed watching popular short dramas. “Most Sweden TV shows tell of boring everyday life,” he said, “But Chinese shows have interesting stories.”

●Amazed by a Chinese host

Many of the students hoped to learn more about Chinese culture on the trip, but Ai Akasaki, from Japan, wanted to meet her idol, Sa Beining. Sa is a well-known host in China. The 16-year-old girl watches the Spring Festival Gala (春晚) every year and likes the funny Sa. “I also watched other shows Sa hosts, like Everlasting Classics (《经典咏流传》). In those beautiful songs, I found Chinese poetry (诗) is as beautiful as Japanese haiku (俳句),” said Ai.

Unluckily, she didn’t meet Sa this time. But she wants to be a journalist (记者) in China and work with Sa one day.

●Surprised by Chinese art

Luise Maralda from Germany has been studying art for 12 years. After learning about art in different countries, she feels she loves Chinese art most. When she visited the Palace Museum, she loved the use of color in the Forbidden City (紫禁城). “Red stands for good luck,” the 18-year-old said. “When artists use the different colors together, the Forbidden City becomes beautiful and elegant (优雅的).” With the love for Chinese art, she also wants to put Western and Chinese art together in the future.

I’d been stuck in the insecure (无自信的) feeling for years and years. Since childhood, I’d be afraid of everything.

It started changing last year. I finally managed to lose 30kg in a period of over 6 months. This taught me that I could change myself.

One day, I heard about a public speaking thing going on at my school and I decided to stand on the stage to give a speech about my experience. For the first time, I was able to share my story in front of hundreds of people, and suddenly all the fears started vanishing. This taught me I could get rid of (摆脱) my fears.

Using the fact that I could change and I could get rid of my fears, I started working on them one by one.
