There are many things people do every day. For example, adults must go to work. Children must go to school and do homework. There are times when we do not want to do these things. So, it is important to understand what motivates (激发) us.

Some people think money motivates people. Others think rewards (报酬) are good. After all, people like money and rewards. However, these do not last. When the money or rewards go away, the motivation is gone, too.

What is a good way to motivate people? Giving people a purpose (目的) works well. A purpose is one’s reason for doing things. An adult’s purpose for working could be because he or she believes the job is important. In the same way, a student might study hard at school because he or she wants to have a bright future. A person who cannot find a purpose for what they do will not want to do it.

Second, people are motivated by feelings because feelings can be strong. For example, love can motivate parents to do things for their children. Being afraid of not getting a good grade may motivate a student to study. Happiness can motivate people to continue doing things that make them happy. If a person is satisfied with a job, he or she will be motivated to do that job. A student who likes to learn or enjoys a certain subject will be motivated to do well.

As students, if we can motivate ourselves through purposes and feelings, then our schoolwork will be more fun and interesting.

Both adults and children need motivation to do things. One way to motivate people is by using     1     and rewards. However, when these things go away, the motivation     2    , too. Another way to motivate people is to give them a purpose in what they do. For example, if an adult knows the     3     of his or her job, he or she will work hard. Feelings can also motivate people. For example, if a student is afraid of getting a     4     grade, he or she will study hard at school. And if students enjoy what they learn, they will perform     5     in their schoolwork.

As students, we can try to motivate ourselves through purposes and feelings so we can enjoy our schoolwork more.

When some people meet difficulties, they always tell themselves “I can’t do it.” Is that right? After a special lesson, I find my answer.

One day, our teacher Donna asked us to finish a task, filling a piece of paper with something we couldn’t do. We were surprised at first but followed her. A student beside me was filling his page: “I can’t make a choice between staying at home and going out...”I also began writing sentences, describing things I couldn’t do. Donna also shared the things she had written: “I can’t get every student interested in reading...”

Then we were asked to fold the papers and place our “I Cans” papers into an empty box. Donna also added hers when all the students’ papers were collected. She took the box and led us to the corner of the playground. “Today we will bury (埋) our ‘I Can’ts’!” Donna said. Each had at least one page of “I Can’ts” in the box, so did our teacher. When the hole was about three feet deep, the digging ended.

Donna said that we shouldn’t repeat our “Can’ts” which sometimes stop us from moving forward (前进). A more useful way is trying. “I Can’ts” should give way to (向……让步) his brothers and sisters “I Cans”, “I Will” and “I’m Going to Do it Right Away.” Maybe someday, with our “I Cans”, we will make an even bigger mark on the world.

When I was a little boy, I was taught to be a person of integrity (正直的). This means that I should do the right thing, even when no one is watching.

After I grew up, I started making use of this rule in every area of my life, but when I did so, some people told me it’s wrong. Whenever I told the truth, I was told, “You take things too seriously.” For a while, I wondered if I really needed to continue to do the right thing or if I should change the rules a bit. However, whenever I did or said something that were against my beliefs, I would feel bad. From then on, I decided to follow my rules.

If you have had similar experiences, why not ask yourself some questions? If your car is sent for repairing, do you want the repairman to give your car the best service? Of course, you do. Integrity is one of life’s most important rules.

Integrity shapes your character (性格). Follow it in every area of your life. Perhaps, in the short run you might get cheated. However, in the long run, if you follow your rules, you will be the one in charge of your life.
