Jack Brown, an office worker, lives in Washington. He inherited(继承)a million dollars when he was 23, but he wasn’t happy at all. When his college friends were looking for their jobs, he didn’t have to. Jack decided to live a simple life like everyone else. When Jack first heard about these children, he wanted to help them. “It was nothing special,” he said. “Until I went to these countries and met the children I was helping, I didn’t know anything about their life.” Once Jack went to meet a little girl in Africa. Send some cows
Do you think a nice gift is a bike or a CD? Heifer International gives different kinds of presents. Its presents might say “quack” or “moo.” Dan West asked friends in the United States to give gifts of heifers (小母牛), or young cows. Since then, Heifer International has given animals to four million families. It gives people the chance to feed themselves.

Heifer International wants the people they help to help others. For one project, the group sent chickens to some children in Asia. The children looked forward to the day when they could help others. Nine-year-old Julie said, “I want other girls like me to take care of chickens and their families. I want to share and give many away.” Julie knew she had to tend to her chickens well so they would make new eggs and healthy chicks. She took good care of them, and they gave birth to strong, healthy chicks. Julie then passed on the gift of chicks to other families.
Let Children Learn
Because of Heifer International, children can spend their days in a schoolhouse instead of working in the fields. They can use the money they get from their animals to pay for school. Heifer International has changed many people’s lives for many years, thanks to a kindhearted farmer named Dan West.

Jim and Della had two possessions(财产) which they were both proud of. One was Jim’s gold watch that was from his father and his grandfather. The other was Della’s beautiful hair. It fell about her, and reached below her knee.

Orion Jean, an eleven-year-old boy in the United States, has a big goal (目标). He wants to spread kindness to as many people as he can.
It all started in August 2020, Jean received $500 in prize money after winning the U.S. National Kindness Speech Contest. He could have spent the money on Legos (乐高), but he quickly realized that it was not enough to just speak about kindness. He decided to put his speech into action. The boy set up the “Race to Kindness” project.
Jean started off by helping children in hospital. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic (疾病大流行), these children were not able to see their family members very often. Jean was calling on people to join his program. In only a month, he had collected 619 toys. The boy sent them to a local children’s hospital. “It is one of the best experiences of my life,” he said at that time.
That success encouraged Jean to set a bigger goal: Race to 100, 000 free Thanksgiving meals to poor families. With the help of a local charity (慈善组织), he was able to reach his goal quickly.
As a book lover, Jean knows how reading can change a person’s life. Last May, after he discovered the fact that two out of three kids from poor families had no books of their own, the boy decided to collect 500, 000 books for them.
Will he take a break after this? “Who knows? Maybe something even bigger will come, ” Jean says. “Maybe we’ll do a ‘race’’ to a million.”
