There’s a big zoo in our city. It’s about five kilometers from my house. I like all kinds of animals. I usually go to the zoo by bus on Sundays. In the zoo, I can see many different kinds of animals, such as monkeys, bears, pandas, tigers, lions and dolphins(海豚). Some animals are friendly, but some are not. Tigers, lions and bears are dangerous(危险的), so they have to live in cages(笼子). But I don’t think it’s good for animals to live in cages. They are not happy.

Tigers and lions usually live in forests. They can run very fast there. They catch(抓住) and eat small animals like deer and rabbits. But now in the zoo, they live in small rooms. They walk round and round in the cages, and they want to get out. I feel sorry for them.

Of all the animals I like dolphins best. I think dolphins are the most interesting animals in the zoo. I like watching them swim. They are very smart. They can play with balls. They are very friendly to people. If you fall into(掉入) the water and you can’t swim, they may come to help you.

【推荐1】Scientists have known for decades that the numbers of some shark species (物种) are decreasing (下降). But a new study shows just how severely worldwide populations have dropped in the past 50 years. The numbers of oceanic sharks fell more than 70 percent worldwide between 1970 and 2018. The information comes from a study that appeared recently in the publication Nature.

Stuart Sandin is a marine biologist who works at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. He says that sharks are great hunters, fast swimmers and have extraordinary (非凡的) senses. Sandin adds that they can identify (识别) any changes in the ocean from a great distance (距离), such as smells or tiny changes in water flow. Their ability to quickly sense anything outside the norm in their environment helps them find food in the open ocean. But it also makes them especially at risk in the face of increased international fishing pressure.

Nathan Pacoureau is a biologist at Simon Fraser University in Canada and one of the writers of the study. He said, “The last 50 years have been pretty devastating (破坏,毁灭) for global shark populations.” Sometimes sharks are caught on purpose by fishing boats. But more often they are caught while fishing for other species. The number of fishing boats in the open ocean has risen sharply since the 1950s. Climate change and pollution also place shark survival at risk. But increased fishing pressure is the greatest threat for every oceanic shark species.

“Sharks are like the lions, tigers and bears of the ocean world, and they help keep the rest of the ecosystem (生态系统) in balance,” Stuart Pimm said, an ecologist from Duke University.

1. How many biologists are mentioned in the passage?
A.One.B.Two.C.Three.D.Four.
2. According to Stuart Sandin, what is not the typical feature (特征) of sharks?
A.Great hunters.B.Fast swimmers.
C.Extraordinary senses.D.Huge size.
3. What’s the meaning of the word “threat” in the third paragraph?
A.危险B.意图C.威胁D.挑战
4. What’s the best title of the passage?
A.Shark population have increased since 1970.
B.Shark population have dropped since 1970.
C.Worldwide populations have increased since 1970.
D.Worldwide populations have dropped since 1970.

Have you ever watched a dolphin show in the Ocean Park?

Have you cheered for the dolphins when they show a few skills? Have you seen a dolphin swimming without a tail? Here, s the story about Clever Winter.

Once, Winter tried her best to get away from the rope around her body. If she couldn’t break free, she would die. Rescuers (救援者) sent her to Clearwater Marine Aquarium (水族馆), where they fought to keep her alive. The dolphin was back to life finally, but caregivers weren’t able to save her damaged tail. Winter ended up losing her flukes and the lower part of her peduncle.

Over the past six years, Clever Winter began to learn to swim without her tail. She pushed herself forward through water by moving from side to side-like a fish. The movement put harmful pressure on Winter’s backbone. That’s when scientists Kevin and Dan had an idea: the first ever man-made dolphin tail! The “tail” was strong enough to stay on Winter as she swam but soft enough so that it wouldn’t hurt her. Winter wore it like a rubber glove. It did take her some time to get used to it. At first, Winter would shake it off and throw it across the pool for her trainers to get back-just like a game of fetch. But after a few months of training, Winter accepted the tail, and her back started to get better.

Winter is an encouragement to everyone. When a group of physically challenged children came to see her, Winter swam right up to them and waved hello to the crowd. It was as if she were saying, “Look at me! I’m like you!”
