Is reading better than watching TV? I believe it is. Is reading better than playing video games? I’m not so sure if it is. If learning is important to you, but not necessarily so, and if pleasure is what you want, these activities can be pleasant in their own ways. Reading might be better than many activities if you want to educate yourself and improve your chances of succeeding in your work.
If you’re serious about creating the habit of reading, what’s important is finding a time you can read every day—often that’s early morning or late at night, or both. For others, it might be during their lunch break. You only need to read for 10 to 20 minutes a day to form the habit.
Then, you need to find a place that’s comfortable. Make sure it has good lighting, the temperature is nice and you’re in a good chair. Or you can find some place that you can relax in without falling asleep, although there’s nothing wrong with sleep.
Next, be sure to shut off the TV, Internet, cell phone, radio, or other music, let reading be a quiet time. Mark an “x” on your calendar every day you read, and try to keep your unbroken “x” es going as long as possible. A habit is much easier to get into if it’s something you enjoy, not something you are made to do. So make the time you spend reading a joy. I’ve been a lifelong reader, so the pleasure of a good book is one of my favorite things in the world. I love to lose myself in the world of a book.

Smog will do great harm(伤害)to your health, especially lungs(肺). It can make you cough and cause skin and eye problems. It seems that we can do nothing to stop it, but only wait until the wind blows all the smog away. However, there are some easy ways to prevent it hurting you. Here are some of them.
①Don’t do exercise in the open.
Exercising in the open makes you breathe(呼吸)deeply, and you will take in the particles(颗粒物)deep into your lungs.
②Stay indoors and keep the air clean.
If you can, just stay in your room and keep the doors and windows closed. Remember to air your room twice a day, you can open the window at noon or at night for half an hour.

Paper and cotton masks can not help you in the haze weather. Some special masks, such as N95 masks, can keep you from breathing in the particles in the air.
④Change your diet.
Scientists find that vitamin A, C and E can greatly help protect your eyes, nose and lungs.
So eat more green vegetables and fresh fruit everyday. What’s more, do not eat food with too much fat(脂肪), it’s bad for your lungs.

Get as much natural light as you can
Enough bright light will help you get up early, says Jennifer Martin, doctor from American University of Sleep Medicine. That’s because light influences melatonin (褪黑激素), which plays an important role in sleep. As a result, when you wake up, taking a walk or enjoying coffee outside will be good. Some people prefer to use curtains or wear eye masks to create a dark sleeping environment, but that will be a bad idea if you want to get up early the next day.
Form the fixed early rising habit
There are two ways to help you get up early. First, you can force yourself to get up at a fixed time. It must be difficult in the beginning but after a few weeks, you will not feel hard. Martin recommends people can try another way. You can get up ten minutes earlier than usual on the first day. After a few days, you can get up another ten minutes earlier. Finally, you will get used to the new habit.
Go to bed early in the evening
A fixed bedtime is also important to make sure you’re getting enough sleep. Most people should have at least seven hours of sleep. So you’ll probably need to go to bed early if you want to change your habit. Research shows that we should make sure we are not in the bright light for at least an hour before we sleep. Bright light will influence our abilities to fall asleep. Listening to soft music or doing some reading may be helpful before you sleep.
Plan something to look forward to
To encourage you to get out of bed, Martin suggests treating yourself to something special you can enjoy. Go to buy your favourite coffee or pick up some delicious breakfast. Start a day with something nice, and you will find getting up early on cold mornings is not difficult.

While you eat, you use them to help chop up (切碎) food. When you smile, you show them off to look your best. Sept 20th is National Teeth Care Day in China. It’s the perfect time for us to learn some tips on how to protect our teeth.
First of all, we need to pick a good toothbrush. Softness is the key. Brushes with hard bristles (刷毛) can hurt your teeth and gums (牙龈). Choose one with soft bristles and rounded ends. Also, a brush with a small head can easily reach all your teeth, since they can squeeze into (挤进) the small spaces of your mouth.
Next, we need to learn the correct way to brush our teeth. The American Dental Association (美国牙医协会) and dentists around the world suggest the Bass brushing technique (贝氏刷牙法).
Charles C Bass (1875-1975), an American medical doctor, invented this method. When Dr. Bass was young, he had serious gum disease and was told to get all his teeth pulled out. He didn’t. Instead, he invented the Bass method to save his teeth.
The method suggests brushing your teeth along the gum line at a 45-degree angle (角度) with very small back-and-forth vibrating motions (颤动). Bad bacteria (细菌) usually hang out where the gums and teeth meet. We can effectively clean the area and prevent tooth decay (蛀牙) and gum disease with this method.
After a good brush, you need to floss (用牙线清理) your teeth for a deeper clean. Put dental floss into the space between two teeth and use a careful back-and-forth motion. It helps get food out of the spaces. But don’t move the floss too hard, or it may hurt your gums.

After the examination, the doctor told my parents my sight would get worse and that I would lose my sight eventually. On the way home from hospital, nobody said a word. One day, would I only imagine the scenery beyond my glasses rather than see it? That September, I entered a middle school. Most nights I had homework that included an armful(一堆) of books to read. To keep up with other children, I made a great effort to finish the task. With my nose a couple of inches from the page, I was tired easily. What’s worse, after I had read several pages on my own, the words slipped off the page into inky pools.
However, I did not have audio books or electronic devices like kids do now. Instead, Mom volunteered to read out loud. Mom worked part-time, cleaned the house, cooked and spent time with Grandma. In spite of being so busy, she showed up in my room like clockwork. In my room, Mom’s voice competed with the ticking of the clock. Being forced to focus on listening, I found a way to keep my marks up and compete with the other kids. When the teacher asked a question, I raised my hand with confidence and answered the questions correctly. Teachers praised me.
Reading helped to remove my fear for my failing sight, and it made me curious about other people’s challenges and how they managed. Though I could not use my eyes to fix on each passage, my mind lit up with every new book.
True to what the doctor said, the worst came, but thanks to Mom, my sense of hearing now allows me to “see”. This was the most precious gift from a mother to her child.

On a farm lived a father and a son. The father always got up early and read books outside the house. One morning, the son came up to his father and said, “Dad, I read books at night but forgot most of them the next morning. What’s the good of reading?”
The father didn’t answer the question. He gave his son a basket that was used to carry coal (煤). He said, “Get some water, from the river with the basket and then I’ll tell you the answer.”
The son felt surprised but he did as his father said. He tried many times but every time the water leaked (漏掉) from the basket.
An hour later, the son came back with nothing and told his father it was hard to get water with the basket. The father said with a smile, “Yes, you’re right, my son. The basket can’t carry water. There is no doubt that speed-reading is an important skill in the fast-paced information age. We need to quickly get key words to find what really need. Speed-reading is quite helpful in some situations, for example, during an exam. It seemed we read more, we enjoy less pleasure of reading than before. To solve this problem, airlines try hard to improve their food. They would like to do so because they don’t want to lose customers.
However, according to scientific research, part of the reason why plane food tastes bad is that at high attitude (海拔) we can not taste things as well as we do on the ground. Also scientists have found that our noses become very dry even before a plane takes off. As the plane moves up, the change in air pressure (气压) reduces one third of the sensibility (感觉) of our taste buds. So our taste buds (味蕾) become senseless. The sad face, however, is that our noses don’t know it.
All of these help explain why food on the plane tastes so bad. They also help explain why airlines choose to offer passengers salty and spicy (辛辣的) food. Without doing so, the food would be tasteless.
Now there are many researches on this. According to one of them, some volunteers are asked to lie with their feet higher than their heads for weeks. And scientists write down their feelings about food taste.
Though scientists try their best, it is not as easy as they thought. Because they can’t deal with the special environment successfully, such as the change in air pressure, making food taste good is still hard for them.

First, we must try to learn our subjects well to make our teachers spend less time on us and let them have more rest.
Second, we must clean the blackboard and the teacher’s desk very often. If we do so, our teachers will work better and of course they will be happier.
Our teachers often have to speak for a long time and they are very tired. At this time, it is better for us to bring them some water. When our teachers drink the water, they will speak more clearly(清楚的). After our teachers correct(批改) our exercise books, we can help to hand them out. If we do so, our teachers can have a short rest.
We all know that our teachers care about our marks(分数) most, so we should try to go over(复习) our lessons to get high marks. If all of us can get high marks, our teachers will feel very happy.
