Sometimes a small act of kindness can make the world different. On a rainy day, a 14-year-old boy, Jack, covered an old man with an umbrella in the street.
“The heavy rain started suddenly. Many people in the street didn’t take umbrellas,” said Jack’s father. He owns a family-run restaurant. Jack and his two brothers help there on weekends. That day Jack happened to help there. When Jack saw the old man in the heavy rain, he ran out with an umbrella. They walked together until the old man got to the bus station.
While Jack was helping the old man, a boy called Ricky happened to be there. He recorded(录制) the act of kindness during his meal. Later he put the short video online and wrote, “Good kids are around us. I want more people to learn from their kindness.”
It quickly became popular on the Internet. Many people gave “likes” and comments(评论). One of them wrote, “What a kind boy! A small act can really make a difference!”

The trip began in Washington, D.C on June 1 and finished in California at the end of August. The Spokes team went to schools. They invited students from grades 6 to 12 to join their classes. They liked the lessons so much. Spokes members were glad to see this. “We can’t teach them programming (编程) in a day,” Bent, a member of the Spokes team, said. “But we can get them excited about programming and show them science is cool. That woman was Susanna Rohm whose 12-week-old baby seemed to stop breathing suddenly. In her panic (恐慌), she couldn’t find her cell phone, so she decided to rush outside to ask for help.
After getting their parents to make the call, the two boys followed their mother to see if they could do anything to help. And help they did! As Susanna was trying to do CPR on her baby, young Rocky came in and told her she was doing it all wrong. Instead, he asked her to use two fingers, push on the chest 5-10 times, tilt (使倾斜) the baby’s head, plug (封堵) the nose and then do a mouth-to-mouth resuscitation (复苏) by breathing into the baby’s mouth.
Luckily for him and the baby, Susanna didn’t doubt his advice for even a second and soon came a loud cry from the baby! Soon the doctors came and the baby was sent to hospital.
The most amazing part of this story is that neither of the boys has attended a CPR class. Instead, they learned it all by carefully reading the posters on the walls of their school hall. Every summer, when the first watermelons arrived, Bernie would give us a call. My father and I would go to Bernie's place, sit on the dock(码头) happily and get ready for a big meal.
Bernie would cut up a big watermelon and sit down next to us. Then we three would put our faces into the watermelon, eating it happily.
In my father's eyes, Bernie was a real rich man not because of his money but because of the way he lived his life. Bernie knew when to stop working, get together with friends and enjoy his “watermelon".
Being rich is a state(状态) of mind. Some of us, no matter(不管) how much money we have, will never be free enough to enjoy our watermelon. If you don't stop and enjoy the small pleasures(乐事) in your life, your work is probably hurting your life.
