I was born and grew up in Northeast China, where the weather is cold and people are fierce. When I was a little kid, I was weak and my face dark. I was often laughed at by other kids. Every time I look back at my childhood, Huayang was the only sunshine on my snowy way to school and the only kindness in my cruel world.
Huayang was the son of one of our neighbors. The handsome guy looked like Andy Lau and was especially charming when smiled. He was two years older than me and acted like an elder brother. From time to time, he stopped the difficult kids from bullying me. I enjoyed going to school with him. We played snowball fight in winter and water gun fight in summer. I enjoyed so much playing with him.
My parents cared little about me. His parents did even less about him. He has a spoiled little sister, an always-in-bed mother and a drunkard father. For many times, I saw his father shout at him or even beat him. Even his little sister told him to do this or that. And he would do it without a word. After graduation from primary school, Huayang had to leave school forever. His father asked him to work to help raise the family.
For many times on my way to and from school, I saw Huayang driving a 3-wheeled tractor, carrying a full load of water to sell. The road was icy and the wind sharp. He had to be very careful. If he spilled out any water, his father would be very angry. Seeing him, my heart got full of sadness. Seeing me, he just waved and smiled, which made me even sadder.
I wonder if he felt the bitterness from life or hatred from fate. But he always showed the world smiling faces. It was he who made me believe that today was not so bad and tomorrow would be good.
Time went by, kids grew up and friends grew separate. I haven’t seen him for over 30 years since I left the Northeast. I don’t know if he takes me as a best friend, but I do. He would never know how much I miss him, and how much I’ve learned from him.

It happened to me in 2017 and I don’t quite remember the day, but I will never forget what happened.
At that time I worked in a training company. My job was outside, so I spent much time working in the street, standing and taking a lot of sunshine and unexpected rain. My job was to interview as many people as possible at least 30 questionnaires within 6 hours. The lunch was very fast, because I had only 15 minutes for it.
On a Saturday sunny morning, instead of watching TV at home, I went through crowds in the street for my work. Not all people offered to help with my work and answer the questions on weekdays, let alone at weekends. It was really harder to depend on the understanding and smile of people. It was then that I kept an eye on a guy who had friendly acts. I’ll never forget him.
I was in a square near a bus station. I saw him sitting there. He was a common man and seemed very shy. I spoke to him and he agreed to answer questionnaire. Suddenly he took out a box and offered me an apple. I was quite surprised. While I was thinking about whether to accept the special gift, he said, “Your hard work will get much more in return. Have a good day!” I was moved deeply.
Although it was a small gift, it was from the heart. I’m thankful to the strange guy not for his finishing the questionnaire, but for the respect and encouragement I got from his words and smile.

Andy, a man wearing an old hat and poor clothes went into a small restaurant.
The waitress said, “Have a seat. I’ll bring them right out.”
Andy turned but carelessly ran into a gentleman named David. “Watch where you’re going, man,” David shouted.
Andy apologized politely.
David turned to the waitress, “Anyway, uhm…three pieces of pizza.”
“We have a five for five dollar deal if you want to add two more.”
“Sure. Why not?”
David went to the table and sat down opposite Andy. “OK, five pieces of pizza.” The waitress put the plate on the table and left.
David reached out his hand to get the pizza, but Andy was quicker than him.
David moved the plate closer to himself and got a piece to eat, glaring at (瞪着) Andy. Andy was surprised.
They almost finished eating their own at the same time. Andy got another piece. David breathed heavily and said, “This is unbelievable!” He got one to have a big bite (咬, 一口). Andy looked at him with big eyes but said nothing.
Only one piece was left now. They both wanted to reach for it, but Andy got it. “Are you hungry?” Seeing David’s angry face, Andy split (撕开) it in half.
“Disgusting (令人恶心的)!” David shouted angrily and stood up. “You should go out and get a job instead of eating other people’s food.”
Just then, the waitress came and smiled at David, “Here’s your pizza, sir.”
“No… no, no. You already dropped mine off.”
“Oh, that was HIS pizza. He ordered the same things FIRST.” She said and left.
David looked embarrassed, “I’m so sorry. That whole time I -I thought you were eating MY pizza. And, and then you split that last piece in half. But... but why?”
“Well, I may not have much. But I’m always happy to share.”

It was a cold winter afternoon before Christmas. My parents and I sat on the bench at the station, waiting for the train. A boy sat nearby. His worn jacket, pale(苍白的) face and dirty hands all seemed to tell me that he was homeless.
“He must be cold and hungry. Maybe I should help him.” I said to myself. Just at that moment, a well-dressed young man walked towards him.
“Excuse me.” The young man said with a smile, “I bought two meal boxes for my son and me, but one was enough. We hate to waste food. Can you help us out and put this to use?” He handed the boy a meal box.
The boy thanked him and opened the box with joy and care. Suddenly, he stopped. He saw an old man in a worn sweater and open-toed shoes coming towards the station.
Putting the meal box aside, the boy stood up and helped the old to his seat. He took off his jacket and covered it on the old man’s shoulders, saying, “A kind man brought me this warm meal but I just finished eating. I hate to waste food. Can you help me out?” He placed the still-warm meal box in the old man’s hands.
“Sure, son, but if only you share that sandwich with me. It’s too much for a man at my age...” We were all touched. Dad went away and soon returned with cups of hot chocolate and a big pizza. Mum and dad went up to them, “Excuse me... ” I rushed into a restaurant and took out my pocket money from my wallet.
It was so cold that afternoon but I felt ________.
