We can make mistakes at any age. Some mistakes we make are about money. But most mistakes are about people. One might say, “Did Jerry really care when I broke up (分手) with Helen?” “When I got that great job, did Jim really feel good about it, as a friend? Or did he envy (妒忌) my luck?” When we look back, doubts (怀疑) like these can make us feel bad.
Why do we go wrong about our friends? Sometimes what people want to say hides their real meaning. And if we don’t really listen, we miss the feeling behind the words. If someone tells you “You’re a lucky dog”, is he really on your side? If he says, “You are a lucky guy.” That’s being friendly. But if he says “a lucky dog”, there’s a bit of envy in those words. Maybe he doesn’t see it himself. But he puts you down a little if he brings in the “dog”. What he may say is that he doesn’t think you deserve (应得) your luck.
“Just think of all the things you have to be thankful for” is another phrase that says one thing and means another. It could mean that the speaker is trying to get you to see your problem as part of your life as a whole. But is he? The thought in this phrase is that your problem isn’t important. It’s telling you to think of all the starving (挨饿的) people in the world when you haven’t got a date for Saturday night.
How can you tell the real meaning behind someone’s words? One way is to take a good look at the person talking. Do his words fit the way he looks? Does what he says agree with the tone (语气) of voice, his posture (立场), or the look in his eyes? Stop and think. The minute you spend thinking about the real meaning of what people say to you may save another mistake. So when you hear someone saying, please try to know what he really means. Don’t just listen to what he says with your ears but feel the words he uses with your head. In this way you may make fewer mistakes.

Dear Amy I think I hurt my friend Sandy. Yesterday I told my friend Lucy a secret of Sandy. And then Sandy heard about this. She was very angry. I feel really guilty (内疚的). What should I do, please? Yours Elizabeth |
Dear Elizabeth We all make mistakes. You should remember that most people can be in the same trouble as you are. Here is some advice for you: Make a sincere apology (道歉). It takes courage to say what you have done is wrong. The important thing about an apology is sincerity (诚意). When you apologize, you should do it sincerely because you really feel sorry. Let the person know you’re not going to let it happen again. Apologizing in person is the best. If you can’t say sorry to your friend face to face, you can write a note. You should let your friend know what you are thinking, even if your friend doesn’t accept it. For some people, it takes time to forgive someone else. Forgive yourself. We can learn from mistakes. Don’t think it over again and again after you apologize. Being too sorry all the time can’t help you. Just make things right and move forward. Yours Amy |

19th January Dear Ms. Hawthorne, I’m writing to express my disappointment with the evening my wife and I spent at your restaurant two nights ago. While the food was, as usual, very good, I regret (感到遗憾) to inform you that the service from our waiter, Max, was most unsatisfactory. First of all, when we arrived, we discovered our table overlooking the garden had been allocated to some other customers. The new table we finally received was by the door and when I complained, Max just laughed. Furthermore, as we were sitting down, he said too much to my wife, which deeply embarrassed her. When our meal came, he served the food carelessly and at the end cleared the plates in an awful manner. I look forward to hearing from you with a satisfactory reply. Rupert Metcalf |

Your wardrobe(衣柜) could be environmentally friendly too. Here is some advice.
★Buy less. Many people take buying unnecessary things as a way to make themselves feel relaxed. Nowadays, almost everyone buys more clothes than needed. Find a better and healthier way to relax, because unnecessary shopping could become another pressure on both your wallet and the environment.
★If you still can’t change old shopping habits, try to buy less denim (斜纹粗棉布) and fewer fur (毛皮) coats. Making just one pair of denim trousers can pollute (污染) the water, and fur coats could cause many animals to die. Natural materials are good for not only the environment but also the mind and body.
★Try not to dry-clean your clothes, as dry-cleaning will cause a lot of problems and be bad for the environment.
★Smart shopping. Buying second-hand clothes is a smarter idea, especially for those you only wear at a special time. What’s more, you can borrow clothes if possible. This can also help you save money and protect the environment.

The design was chosen from 5.816 works from 38 countries and regions(地区). Cao Xue, the designer of Bing Dwen Dwen, said the idea first came from the traditional Chinese snack bingtanghulu—the sugar coat later turned into an ice shell around Bing Dwen Dwen. However, a simple snack couldn’t stand for a country by itself. Cao’s team tried many animals and plants and finally decided on a panda. “We don’t need to explain anything to have it understood across different cultures.” said Cao. However, there were already too many cartoon images(形象)of pandas. The mascot needed to be original(原创的)and creative. Cao first decided that it should be a baby panda instead of an adult one. So the body of Bing Dwen Dwen is as long as its head.
Cao’s team looked all around the world to collect all the panda designs they could find. They wanted to make sure their panda looked different. They visited the panda research base in Wolong Sichuan to get ideas. They saw that baby pandas are pigeon-toed(内八字)and often lean in(倾斜)while standing.
“If we say artists are like actors who play themselves, designers are actors who have to fit into different roles.” Cao said. “Design is like dancing with chains. I’m glad we performed a good dance.”
