Living and dealing with kids can be a difficult job these days, but living and dealing with parents can be even more difficult. If I have learned anything in my 16 years, it is that communication is very important, both when you disagree and when you get along. With any relationship, you need to let the other person know how you are feeling. If you are not able to communicate, you drift apart. When you are mad at your parents, or anyone else, not talking to them doesn’t solve anything. Communication begins with the concerns(关心)of another. It means that you can’t just come home from school, go up to your room and take no notice to anyone. Even if you just say “Hi”, and see how their day was for five minutes, it is better than nothing. If you look up the word “communication” in a dictionary, it will say “expressing ideas and feelings or giving people information: a letter or a message”.
To keep a good relationship with your parents, you must keep communication strong. Let them know how you feel, even if it’s just by writing a note. When dealing with parents, you always have to make them feel good about how they are doing as a parent. If you are trying to make them see something as you see it, tell them that you’ll listen to what they have to say, and ask them politely to listen to you. Shouting or walking away only makes the situation worse.
Here is an example: one night, Sophie went to a street party with her friends.
She knew she had to be home by midnight after the fireworks, but she didn’t feel she could just ask to go home. That would be rude. After all, they had been nice enough to take her along with them. Needless to say, she was late getting home. Her parents were mad at first, but when Sophie explained why she was late, they weren’t as mad and let it go. Communication is the key here. If Sophie’s parents had not been willing to listen, Sophie would have been in a lot of trouble. Communication isn’t a one-way matter: it goes both ways.
Just remember: if you get into a situation like Sophie’s, telling the other person how you feel—listening is the key to communication.

“The kitten named Garlic(大蒜) was born on July 21, 2019, in a laboratory(实验室) of the biotechnology company Sinogene. It was born from an embryo (胚胎) carried by a surrogate(代孕) mother,” said Wang Jidong, the CEO of Sinogene."Garlic has been verified(证实的) as a cloned cat by a third-party verification organization, and is currently in a good condition."
The birth of the kitten is the result of a cloning program that began last August. Chen Dayuan, a researcher from the Institute of Zoology at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said the technology developed by the company has a high success rate: one cloned kitten from four implanted surrogates.
It’s rare(罕见的) for cats to be successfully cloned, said Shi Zhensheng, a professor from the Veterinary Medicine College at China Agricultural University. Cats have unique reproductive characteristics, which make them difficult to clone. The success of Sinogene marks a step forward in China’s cloning research sector.
The cloning technology used to create Garlic will help China to build a genetic library of endangered species (物种), with the goal of breeding species under threat of extinction.
1. How old is the cloned cat Garlic now?
A.Less than one year old. | B.One year old. |
C.Two years old. | D.Three years old. |

It explains the world and makes our lives easier with technology. One of the most exciting fields in science is artificial intelligence (人工智能,AI). This is an area where scientists are working on creating machines that think like humans.
However, one of the most famous scientists has a very dark warning for us about this type of technology.
“The development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race,” said Professor Stephen Hawking to the BBC.
Hawking is a well-known British physicist and author of bestselling science book A Brief History of Time. This warning came after commenting(评论)the technology he uses to speak with. As Hawking has got a serious disease called ALS, he needs an AI computer to communicate. The computer learns how Hawking thinks and suggests the words he may want to use next.
This is a basic type of AI, which is very useful, yet Hawking fears the possibility of creating technology that can match or surpass human intelligence. And it’s easy to imagine how terrible things may be. Many TV shows and films show big, killer machines that are far cleverer than us. “Humans, who are limited(限制) by slow biological evolution (进化), couldn’t compete,” said Hawking.
But not every scientist is pessimistic (悲观的) about AI technology. “I believe we will be in control of the technology for a long time,” said Rollo Carpenter, creator of Cleverbot in the UK, which is a software program that remembers past conversations. “The advantages of it to solve many of the world problems will be realized.” In what direction do you think AI is heading? Should we be hopeful or fearful?
1. Which of the following is TRUE about AI?
A.It makes our lives easier. |
B.The technology is not very popular now. |
C.Scientists haven’t controlled the technology. |
A.explain how AI has helped us |

Confucianism (儒家思想) has been followed by Chinese people for more than two thousand years.
To help people understand how to behave towards others, Confucianism teaches the Five Constants (五常). These are ren, yi, li, zhi and xin. They are general virtues (美德) around the world. The most important two are ren and li.
Ren is the feeling of care and love we should have for others. Confucius (孔子) explained ren could best be understood as loving others. He is famous for teaching people “What you do not want done to yourself, do not do to others”. It is quite similar to what is known in the West as the Golden Rule (treat others as you wish to be treated).
While the meaning of ren is easy to understand, li is a little harder to express. It can be thought of as duty or even respect. Generally, li is the way we should connect with people in our everyday life. In Confucian writings, discussions about li include the proper way to drink tea and how to remember ancestors. While ren is mostly about our opinions and feelings, li is about how we express our opinions and feelings towards others and towards the world around us.
Perhaps the most well-known Confucian virtue is xiao. This is the duty children have to their parents. Xiao means loving, respecting, obeying and taking care of one’s parents in their old age. In Confucianism, xiao is important for a harmonious (和谐的) society: Without it, the whole world would fall into a mess.

If it’s hard for you to communicate with your parents, don’t worry about it. Here is some advice for you to bridge the generation gap (代沟).
Don’t argue with your parents. Don’t get to your parents when you are angry. Your parents probably won’t think about your ideas if you are shouting at them. And you can’t express yourself well if you are angry. Go to some place to cool off. Make sure you understand why you are unhappy. Then think about what you want to say to your parents. If you don’t think you can speak to them at the moment, try writing a letter.
Try to reach a compromise (和解). Perhaps you and your parents disagree on something. You can keep your disagreement and try your best to accept each other. Bob’s mother didn’t agree with him about buying a motorcycle. They argued over it. But they finally came to a compromise. Bob bought the motorcycle, but only drove it on certain days. Of course, your parents might refuse to compromise on something. In these situations, it is especially important to show love and respect (尊敬) to them. Showing respect will keep your relationship strong.
Talk about your values. The values of your parents are probably different from those of your own. Tell your parents what you care about and why. Understanding your values might help them see your purposes in life.
A good relationship with your parents can make you a better and happier person. It is worth having a try!

So if your mom loves to read, you just might grow up carrying a book wherever you go, just as she does. But parents do a lot more than just pass on their hobbies. Moms and Dads need to care for their kids the minute their kids are born. Most parents will do this as long as they live.
Here are some ways you can stay close, get along well, and build a strong relationship with your parents.
Spend time together. Instead of playing computer games or watching TV, ask your mom and dad to play with you. Go outside together, or do some reading.
Be kind. Little things might mean a lot to your mom or dad. You can brighten a parent's day with a hug, a card, or a joke. It's also lovely when a kid cleans up his or her room without being asked. And if you try not to fight with your brothers or sisters, your parents will be so happy!
Do your best at whatever you do. You don't have to be perfect, but when you do your best, you make your parents proud. It makes them happy to see how you're turning into a great kid. Why? Because it lets them know they’re doing a good job.

My relationship with my mother is worse and worse now. It seems she’s never tired of talking. She talks here and there, day and night. More seriously, I feel like we don’t have much in common. She doesn’t always understand what I’m trying to say. What should I do?
Yours,
Jim
Dear Jim,
I know how you feel. It’s not easy being your age and it’s not easy being a mother either.
It’s common for kids to have trouble talking with parents. And mothers who talk too much are not new to teenagers. But remember, she’s nagging(唠叨) you because she just wants what’s best for you. Talking is her way to show love and care. And she also wants to know more about you. After a day’s work, she’s tired, too. But she will never be tired of caring about you. Kids should learn to understand and care about parents.
In my opinion, it’s helpful to share school life with her: you talk and she listens. Doing some housework together with her is another good way for you to know each other better. And if possible, often tell her your feelings about things around you. Always keep in mind: be polite and patient.
Yours,
Doctor Green

They found people who dream about a new task do it better on waking than those who do not sleep or do not dream.
Volunteers were asked to learn the layout(布局,设计) of a 3D computer maze(迷宫) so they could find their way several hours later. Those allowed to take a pap and who also remembered dreaming of the task, found their way to a landmark quicker.
The researchers think the dreams are a sign that unconscious(无意识的) parts of the brain are working hard to process information about the task..
Dr. Robert Stickgold of Harvard Medical School, said dreams may be a marker that the brain is working on the same problem at many levels.
Study tips
Co-author Dr. Erin Wamsley said the study suggests our non-conscious brain works on the things that it deem(认为) are the most important.
“Every day we are gathering lots of information and new experiences,” she said. “It would seem that our dreams are asking the question, “How do I use this information to inform(影响) my life?”
The scientists say there may be ways to use this phenomenon(现象) for improving learning and memory. For example, students might be better studying hard before bedtime, or taking a nap after a period of afternoon study.
