Many think the word emoji comes from emotion. In fact, it’s from the Japanese for pictures, plus letter, or character.
In the 1990s, the Japanese mobile phone operator DoCoMo tacked a heart pictograph(图画文字) on to a cheap pager(传呼机), which was a great success with teenagers.
Kurita led the team at DoCoMo that designed a set of 176 pixelated (像素化的) characters inspired by basic concepts of things like weather, food, and feelings. They were called emoji. The first set of emoji launched on DoCoMo phones in 1999.
Other Japanese companies quickly followed DoCoMo’s lead and developed their own versions of emoji. Since then, emoji have exploded.
Emoji have been available outside of Japan since the mid-2000s through separate apps, which let users copy and paste the icons into text messages and emails. An emoji keyboard was added to Apple iPhones by 2011.
Today, emoji are part of our everyday vocabulary. However, emoji isn’t language and it isn’t ruining language.

When two people meet, there are a lot of ways of greeting. But the ways of greeting are not always the same in different countries.
Two people usually greet each other with a handshake in America. It is a way to show respect (尊敬) to the other person. Players from opposite teams shake hands before a game for the same reason. However, most Americans don’t shake hands when they meet people they have already known well. When American friends meet each other, they might only wave (挥手), or maybe just nod their heads.
There is a special way of greeting called “Hongi” (触鼻礼) in New Zealand. In the greeting, two people press their noses and foreheads (前额) together and close their eyes. This is an old tradition that comes from the Maori (毛利人), who were the first people to live in New Zealand. Even today, many New Zealanders still press their foreheads when they meet.
People bow to each other every time when they meet in Japan. Even family members bow to each other. People decide how low to bow depending on how respected the other person is.
Today, new ways of greeting are created all the time. People can do this with a quick “hi”, a handshake, or even a simple smile. The important thing is that the people they are greeting understand them.

Nearly everyone wants to be successful. It can be very hard to succeed, though. Here is some advice to help you:
●Plan for successWanting success is not enough. You have to plan for it. Ask yourself: How am I going to be successful? What do I have to learn to achieve the success I want? And how long will it take me to get it? These questions will help you plan for your success.
●Form good habitsIf you study the lives of successful people, you’ll find that they have excellent work habits. Edison, for example, had a habit of always coming up with new ideas, and this helped him become one of the greatest inventors. Forming such habits can be boring, but useful.
●Never stop learningSuccessful people never stop learning. They never say “I’ve learned enough. There is nothing more I need to know.” You have to understand that the moment you stop learning is the moment you stop progressing. We live in an ever-changing (不断变化的) world, and need to be able to keep up with it.
●Let failure motivate (提升) youIt’s okay to fail, it happens to everyone. Michael Jordan, one of the most successful basketball player ever, used to say that his failure was what drove him to succeed. Learning from your mistake is what will put you on the road to the success you want.

Today, about 1.4 billion cars travel on the roads throughout the world. Cars offer a convenient(便利的) way to get around. However, cars are bad for the environment. Besides making air pollution happen, cars are thought to make global warming happen.
Car Free Day asks drivers to give up their cars for a day to protect the environment. People from around the world get together in the streets to let the world know that we don’t have to accept the world full of cars. It was first started by 34 cities in France and September 22 is Car Free Day.
Organized activities are held in many cities over the world on Car Free Day. In Brussels, on Car Free Day everybody shall follow the rules. Using bikes or buses or subways is allowed. The streets are open only to walkers, bicycles and buses from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. In Beijing, Car Free Day asks drivers to leave their cars at home for one day each month and walk or ride a bike or take a bus or subway to work. More and more people are joining in the activity. In the first quarter of this year, Beijing only had 52 blue sky days, and you may see haze(雾霾 ) almost every day! We must do more for Car Free Day as a Beijing driver said, “We may not change the weather, but we can choose not to drive.” The first Car Free Day in China was in Chengdu in 2001. The slogan for the day is “If we drive for one less day, we can have one more nice day.”
But we do not want just one day and then a return to “normal” life. We should go on with Car Free Day. We can find ways in our neighborhood to get around without our cars. Can we use bikes or buses or subways? Can we carpool(拼车) with co-workers? Can we walk with our kids to school instead of driving them? Think about how much money we’ll save on gas by not using our cars. We may decide that going car-free isn’t bad at all.

When they get older, kids want to buy more and more things. They want things that are more expensive than candy. Then they have to work harder! They often wash the family car, cut the grass, walk the dog and cook dinner.
Some jobs are a good way for kids to learn new things. For example, they can learn to use a lawnmower (割草机) or how to cook. Of course, their parents help them at first.
