Venus (金星) is close to Earth.     1       Earth is the third planet from the Sun. Venus is similar to Earth in size and mass (质量). It is often described as Earth’s “sister”.

Scientists have been learning about Venus for a long time. First, they looked at Venus through telescopes (望远镜). But Venus is covered with thick clouds.     2     So, they made guesses about it.

For a long time, scientists thought that Venus had water and plants. They thought Venus might have animals, too.     3

4     In the 1960s, they began sending probes (航天探测器) to Venus. The probes flew through the thick clouds. They took pictures of Venus up close. They found out many things, too. The probes sent the pictures and things they found out back to the scientists.

5     First, they learned that most of their guesses were not right. And they learned that Venus is very hot.

A.Then scientists found a way to learn more about Venus.
B.It is the second planet from the Sun.
C.The scientists learned a lot from the probes.
D.But they didn’t know for sure.
E.Scientists could not see Venus well through the clouds.

【推荐1】What do black holes look like? We finally got the answer: They look like dark circles with a bright ring around the outside. Scientists took the world’s first photo of a black hole. The black hole is very far from the Earth—about 55 million light years away. This is not the only black hole in the universe.

Black holes are mysterious in the universe. A photo can help us learn more about them. How much do you know about black holes? Try to answer the following questions.

Q: What is a black hole?

A: A black hole comes from a dying star. The star turns into a small point. The point has much mass and strong gravity. The strong gravity of a black hole pulls things. The black hole “eats” these things. Black holes can even “eat” light. That’s why a black hole looks “black”.

Q: If black holes are “black”, how do scientists know they are there?

A: We cannot see black holes. But we can see how their strong gravity works on the things around them. A black hole’s gravity pulls dust and gas into it. And if a star is orbiting a point in space, scientists can study the star’s orbit. They can tell if the star is orbiting a black hole.

Q: How did scientists take the picture of the black hole?

A: Scientists didn’t use a camera to take the picture. They used eight radio telescopes in different places across the world. The telescopes got information from the black hole. Scientists used computers to deal with the information. It took them two years to get the final picture.

Q: Will the sun turn into a black hole? And if it does, will it “eat” the Earth?

A: The sun won’t become a black hole. According to NASA, it does not have enough mass to turn into one. When the sun dies, it will become a smaller and cooler star. Even if the sun becomes a black hole, the Earth would still be safe.

1. Which of the following is NOT true about black holes?
A.They look like dark circles with a bright ring around the outside.
B.They are about 55 million light years away from the Earth.
C.Black holes look “black” because they pull light and “eat” it.
D.Scientists say that there is more than one black hole in space.
2. The underlined word “pulls” in the first answer most probably means “________”.
A.movesB.addsC.touchesD.plants
3. Scientists know black holes are there by ________.
A.using cameras to take pictures
B.using radio telescopes around the world
C.watching the stars carefully in the sky
D.watching the shape and color of the sun
4. What will happen if the sun becomes a black hole?
A.The Earth will die at once.
B.The Earth will become black.
C.The Earth will still be safe.
D.The Earth will become a cool star.
5. The best title for the passage may be “________”.
A.Learning about black holes
B.The Earth and the black holes
C.Something about the universe
D.The sun and the Earth

We have day and night because the Earth keeps turning all the time.     1     When our part of the Earth turns away from the Sun, it is night.

Just because the Moon is closer to the Earth than the Sun, it looks much bigger than the Sun.     2     And small things will also look bigger when they are nearer.

The Sun is big enough to give out very strong light.     3     Why? In fact, the light from the Moon comes from the Sun. The Moon looks much bigger and brighter than the stars. But actually(事实)the stars are much bigger and brighter than the Moon.     4

5     But of all the planets, only on the Earth there are living things and people can only live on the Earth, too.

A.There are many other planets in the universe.
B.Big things will look smaller when they are farther.
C.The Moon can’t give any light at all, but it looks quite bright, too.
D.When our part of the Earth turns to the sun, it is day.
E.They look smaller than the Moon also because they are farther away from the Earth.
F.Astronauts have already been to the moon.

Our Milky Way Galaxy may be home to 2 billion planets that have the right conditions to support life. These planets have the correct temperature for liquid water. While no one knows what alien life would look like, if it is anything like life on earth, it would need water to keep alive. According to the research, there are nearly 2 billion habitable planets in the Milky Way Galaxy, which is just one of 100 to 200 billion galaxies in the universe.

The earth was formed 9 billion years after the Big Bang. Many of the planets in the Milky Way were formed millions and some even billions of years before the earth. If intelligent life had existed on any of these planets, they would be much more developed than humans. With that much time to develop the technology for space travel, we should have been visited by aliens many times.

So where is everyone? Some people believe that aliens have visited earth many times, and some governments of the world might have known very well. some believe that we have also been visited many times in the ancient past. They point to the Egyptian pyramids or the huge heads of Easter Island. They say that there was no way that ancient humans were able to create these structures without alien assistance.

According to Harvard professor Avi Loeb,        . For example, in 2017, a cigar-shaped object came within 33 million km of the earth as it passed through our solar system. It was named Oumuamua, which means “messenger from the distant past reaching out to us” in Hawaiian. Loeb says that its unusual shape and the fact that it sped up as it left our solar system sets it apart from anything else we’ve seen. He thinks it was a probe sent by an alien civilization. Jackie Fairey, says everyone should have reservation about this. She is one of many scientists who say there are more reasonable explanations for Oumuamua. That hasn’t stopped Professor Loeb. He has written a new book on Oumuamua called Extraterrestrial: The First Sign of Intelligent Life Beyond Earth.
