Mars is full of surprises. Not long ago, something strange showed up in a picture of this planet. It is a pattern (图案) on the ground that looks like a bear face.
The picture was taken from high above Mars. Scientists took a closer look at the bear. Different marks on the ground make up the face of the bear. Its two eyes are big holes known as craters (坑). Rocks from space hit the surface of Mars long ago and then made the craters. The nose of the bear is a hill. Part of the hill has broken off in the shape of a V. The circle that forms the head is a crack (裂缝) in the ground. It might be the edge (边缘) of a crater that was much larger. Later, something like lava (岩浆) filled it. The “lava” might have come out of the hill that formed the nose.
Seeing a bear face on Mars is not as unusual as it might sound. The human mind is finding patterns in the world all the time. This is why you might see a cloud and think that its shape is like an animal or object.
People watching the surface of Mars have had experiences like this. In 1976, people were excited to find something like a human face in a picture of Mars. But it was just a huge rock.
These days, people take pictures of all kinds of things on Mars. Some have strange shapes. They might look like Martians made them, but it is probably not true. So far, Mars seems to be lifeless. The strange shapes people see are just patterns in the land.

Firefighting(消防) is an important job to keep people safe and help stop fires from damaging(毁坏) too much property(财产).
There are many important parts to be a firefighter. First of all, firefighters have to be strong enough to do their work, so they need to have physical training, such as carrying heavy objects(物体), going up many stairs, and working for a long time. Firefighters also have to know the latest skills in fighting fires, so they need to go through regular training to keep themselves and others safe. Anyway, the most important part of being a firefighter is to work as a team. They have to work together to stop fires!
Firefighting is very stressful. Firefighters never know when a fire or other emergency(紧急情况) is going to happen, so they have to be ready at all times. Even in the middle of the night, firefighters have to be able to wake up quickly when the alarm(警报) goes off.
Firefighters don’t just fight fires. They also help people who are in accidents. For example, they use their special tools to help get people out of the cars if they’re stuck(卡住). In some places, firefighters also have to be prepared to help people who are sick or injured(受伤的). These firefighters might be trained as nursing staff.
Firefighters are always there to help us whenever there’s an emergency. Firefighting is not easy, but if you like helping people, it might be a good job for you!

Every year on Oct 4 the world comes together for the well-being (福祉) of animals everywhere. This is World Animal Day.
Starting in 1931 in Florence, Italy, the yearly event has become a special chance for everyone who cares about animals to have an influence. This year, the theme is “A Shared Planet”.
In past ten years, China has done much to make the well-being of domestic (驯养的) and wild animals better. The protection of Asian elephants is a good example.
Asian elephants have become endangered because of hunting for their tusks. Asian elephants in China are mostly found in Yunnan province. These wild animals sometimes eat local farmers’ crops. The government has been trying to create a more harmonious (和谐的) relationship between local people and wildlife. For example, they make laws to prevent people buying and selling tusks and make rules for building separation facilities (隔离设施) to keep away wandering (游荡的) wild animals.
With World Animal Day around the corner, we all can think of more ways to better protect our wild friends

For one thing, Americans and Chinese are different in arranging a visit. Chinese tend(爱好) to call on their friends unexpectedly. Americans, on the other hand, prefer making an appointment in advance(提前). an unexpected visitor is regarded as impolite.
For another thing, their table manners differ. Chinese usually eat directly from the serving dish. And during the meal, the hosts may keep putting food on the guests’ plates. An American, however, only eats from his own plate. He never picks up food for others if he isn’t asked to do so.
Moreover, they have different ways responding to complimenting remarks(褒扬). When a Chinese hostess is praised for her cooking skills, for example, she will immediately apologize for being a poor cook. Yet, an American hostess is likely to accept it, “Oh, I’m glad that you enjoy it. I cooked it especially for you.”
At the beginning, it was hard for Lin Fei to get used to things around him because of these cultural differences. But soon, he succeeded in adjusting(判断) to their way of doing things, “When in Rome do as the Romans do,” he’d like to say when he was asked how he could get along in a new culture.

In Hanoi, capital of Vietnam, a 5-storey building is completely covered(覆盖)by a living, green curtain. The so-called “living building” is the work of Dr. Hoang Nhu Tang. He was a university teacher.
It all started 30 years ago. Back then, this building was one of the tallest in the area. The sunlight shone the building all through the day in summer and that made it very uncomfortable to live in. Hoang decided to plant two creeping plants(匍匐植物)because he wanted to block(遮挡)sunlight. He was happy to see his idea worked and the temperature dropped a lot. And 30 years later, the plants still play their role. Hoang said it only took the creeping plants 8 or 9 years to completely cover the whole building, but guiding them towards that end was the hardest part. Now, he must cut off some of the branches(树枝)from the plants once or twice a month. It’s a way of stopping the plants from covering certain areas, like the windows.
“Because of the plants, the air in the house is very fresh and cool,” Hoang said. “The building is a peaceful place that helps people live peacefully with nature in this crowded city center.”
